WelcomeDear prospective student Thank you for your interest in Reading College and the Apprenticeships and part-time courses we plan to run from summer 2012.

At Reading College our purpose is to offer interesting and relevant courses that enable local people in Reading and Thames Valley Berkshire to make the most of their talent and move forward in their working life. Our courses have been chosen to develop the specific knowledge and skills that employers need to make their businesses successful.

Many of the courses are for ambitious people who are already in work and want to take their vocational skills to a higher level, improving their chances of moving up in the buoyant local job market.

If you have been out of work for a while, our Get that Job courses (pages 76-77) will give you the skills and confidence to start a job as soon as possible. These courses are free for unemployed jobseekers and all include intensive help to find and start your job.

Apprenticeships are an effective way for employers to benefit from subsidised training costs and motivate their employees to gain the knowledge and qualifications required for their specific role.

Helping you to make good a course decision is important to us and our Student Services team is on standby on 0800 371 434 to provide any information and advice you need. Our course offer is under continuous review, so please visit our website, www. reading-college.ac.uk for our most up-to-date course information.

We are pleased to see those who are regulars on our courses, but also those who haven’t done courses for many years. A good way to get a feel for what Reading College can offer you is to visit the college on an open event (see page 7). I look forward to welcoming you at the college.

Best wishes

Lesley Donoghue, Principal

Delivering skills for the thriving local economyRichard Byard MIED, Head of Economic Development at Reading UK CIC reports on the local economy, its potential for growth and the important role of Reading College.

The local economy Located at the heart of Thames Valley Berkshire, Reading has a strong economy, with hi-tech industries and the creative sector contributing significantly to its success. The region attracts 19.4% of all South East foreign direct investment. Businesses are attracted to the area by the highly skilled workforce, the excellent national and international transport links, the high quality of life and the well formed business clusters in sectors such as ICT, business and financial services, energy and renewables, pharma – bio and defence.

Reading’s prospects for economic growth are extremely promising.

Financial Times fDi Magazine recently judged Reading to be the top European Micro-City of the Future.

Centre for Cities named Reading as one of the top city economies in the UK that are more likely to grow stronger. Similarly, The Work Foundation indicated that Reading is likely to do well in leading the national economic recovery:

“the recovery is likely to be led by cities such as Cambridge, London and Reading. These cities have high levels of employment in growth sectors, highly skilled populations and strong private sectors” 1.

1 No City Left Behind? The geography of the recovery – and the implications for the coalition , The Work Foundation, July 2010

The local job market In addition to Reading’s knowledge-intensive employment sectors, other key sectors in the area include construction, retail, hospitality and care and the demand for skilled employees in these areas is predicted to increase. Recently approved distribution centres will create over 2,500 jobs and new jobs are also expected to be created in the commercial/administration (approx. 650), catering/leisure (approx. 375) and health (approx. 300) sectors.

I am pleased that Reading College plays an active role in responding to the changing needs of our employers by providing education and training opportunities that meet the needs of the local economy and job market and deliver the skills that enable businesses to compete in the national and global markets.
