How often do you take time out of your day to read for pleasure?

How many of us would like to do this more often?

Often, this is one of the things that gets dropped to the bottom of the to-do list because of our hectic home/life schedule!

Our reading habits

1 in 6 people in the UK struggle to read, write and communicate effectively.

Page 4: Reading for Life

The new curriculum (due to be implemented in Sept 2014) aims to:

promote high standards of literacy and [help children] develop a love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

[encourage pupils] to read widely across both fiction and non fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live.

Reading widely and often increases pupils’ understanding and vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech.

It also opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds.

Some of the things already happening at school to promote the importance of reading are: Regular story time in every class Reading to gather information about topics Animated or audio stories Daily time for individual reading Book reviews in Key Stage 2 Story boxes- questions for reading and ideas for

writing own stories

Meadowside is already on the journey to this treasure-house!

It is well known that good, well rounded readers become good, well rounded writers and speakers.

Reading onto speaking and then through to writing is the journey we take children on at school.
