MASS SCHEDULE Saturday: 4PM Sunday: 9AM, 11AM

First Saturday Mass: 9 AM
December 2, 2018
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, which is also the first Sunday of the new liturgical year. The
Advent season includes the four Sundays that precede Christmas. Advent is a time of
preparation for the coming of the Lord. In this season, we recall two central elements of our
faith: the final coming of the Lord in glory; and the incarnation of the Lord in the birth of Jesus.
The key themes of the Advent season are:
Watchful waiting ~ Preparation ~ Justice

First Sunday of Advent
As we begin Advent we are
called to “wait” in joyful
anticipation for the grace of
Christmas to once again bless
our lives. Wherever you live in
our parish, there are poor families within walking
distance of your home. When in need, they ring
the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your
doorbell.
Your gift to St. Vincent de Paul will help the poor
celebrate the grace of God’s love this Christmas.

Annual Soap Drive for Norfolk Prison:
Please bring bars of soap as a gift to Norfolk Prison
inmates. This simple present is a huge gift because it
helps inmates know that though they are in prison,
they are loved by God and they are not forgotten.
FOR SECURITY REASONS, THE SOAP MUST REMAIN
IN ITS ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER’S PACKAGING.
Deadline for donations is December 7. Your soap
donations can be left in the marked baskets at St.
Agnes and at St. Athanasius.
Thank you for remembering those among us who are
in prison.
The readings for this first Sunday of
Advent stress the importance of having a strong
and committed relationship with Jesus Christ. When
stress and tensions arise, or we feel weighed down
and discouragement sets in. These readings remind
us to remain hopeful. They tell us again that we have
all we need in Christ Jesus – we need to rely on him
and follow him faithfully. Pray for the grace to
recognize the little signs of hope that God places
before you.

The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose
conception was brought about the normal way, was
conceived without original sin or its stain—that’s
what "immaculate" means: without stain. From the
first instant of Mary’s existence she was in the state
of sanctifying grace and was free from original sin.

Congratulations, Tom Stakem
Congratulations to
Tom Stakem who
received the
Archdiocesan
Cheverus Medal from
Cardinal O’Malley last
Sunday. This award
was initiated at the
time of the
bicentennial of the
Archdiocese of Boston to recognize people who have
given of themselves for the advancement of the
Mission of the Church. Tom has been helping the
Archdiocesan Finance Department for the past 14
years. Well done!!
Congratulations, Sophie Beninati
It is with great joy to
announce that Sophie
Beninati was honored
with the 2018 Cheverus
Award. At the 2008
celebration of the
Bicentennial of the
Archdiocese of Boston,
Cardinal Seán instituted
the Cheverus Awards which were presented to selected
recipients from throughout the Archdiocese at the
Closing Liturgy of the Bicentennial Year. It was his
intention that these awards would continue to be
bestowed annually on or around the Solemnity of Our
Lord Jesus Christ the King. Honorees are selected each
year from one third of the parishes of the Archdiocese,
representing all of the Pastoral Regions and Vicariates.
Sophie received her award from Cardinal Sean at a Prayer
Service at Immaculate Conception Parish in Malden on,
November 25 at 2:00PM. Sophie epitomizes the
hospitality that St. Athanasius is noted for. She is the go-
to person for decorating the church, the Sunday morning
Coffee Hour, food for the Parish Picnic, when it comes to
food and celebrations you can always find Sophie working
behind the scene as a real Unsung Hero. Congratulations
and well done !

Harrows’ Gift Card Drive for Haiti was a
great success!
Because of you and our friends at Harrows, we have
broken our record and sold 150 Harrow’s gift cards
to benefit our friends in Haiti! Including several
monetary donations, we were able to send $1,192 to
support St. Boniface Hospital’s vital work. Thanks so
much for your faithfulness and generosity!
A special thanks to Wally Arsenault, the owner of
Harrows, for his continued support of our mission to
serve our brothers and sisters in Southwestern Haiti.
Lazarus House Winter Coat & Clothing
Drive: December 8th and 9th Under the
Beech Tree
Next weekend, Saturday Dec. 8th and Sunday Dec.
9th, the Lazarus House ministry will have our 8th
annual clothing drive. With the onset of an early
winter and the gas explosions in Lawrence, this is a
community in need of our help. Accepting new and
gently used clothing. (If you are wondering whether
a coat is "gently used," ask "would I give this to my
best friend?") With three stores (St. Francis and St.
Claire, St. Martin of Tours, and Good Shepherd) they
are looking for warm winter coats, sweatshirts,
sweaters, boots, light waterproof jackets, new hats,
scarves, and used gloves. Also always in need of new
socks, underwear, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
This year's theme, after such a huge success with last
year's drive, is "Over the Top" (of the ladder that
is). Last year we were 6 steps up, now we need just 2
more steps! Last year Father Rock's truck made three
trips up and a volunteer had three minivans full of
coats.
In this season of Advent, let's do something for
others in a community that is in need of our goods to
help strengthen their neighborhoods and their
people. Let's make Advent and Christmas a merrier
time in Lawrence!
Help Decorate our Jesse Tree!
Please add your name to our Jesse Tree using the
star of David ornaments located with the Jesse Tree
at the back of the church.
The Jesse tree helps us connect the custom of
decorating Christmas trees to the events leading to
Jesus’ birth. The Jesse tree is named from Isaiah
11:1: “A shoot shall come out of the stock of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” Jesse was
the father of King David. We adorn a Jesse tree with
illustrated ornaments that represent the people,
prophesies, and events leading up to the birth of
Jesus. The ornaments of the Jesse tree tell the story
of God in the Old Testament, connecting the Advent
season with the faithfulness of God across four
thousand years of history.

SAINT ATHANASIUS PARISH NEWS
Thank You! Thank-you! Thank-you!
Every year, as Chairs of the Christmas Faire, we have been awed at the unending generosity and support of the
parishioners at St. Athanasius. This year was no exception. And in the spirit of our Reading Catholic Community we
were blessed with amazing support from the parishioners of St. Agnes too. We close the 2018 Christmas Faire with
grateful hearts for the wonderful Catholic Community we are a part of.
Thank-you to everyone who contributed to the Faire by baking, knitting and crocheting, donating treasures for the Faire,
donating gift cards, soda, water and other items. Your generosity is truly appreciated. Without those donations our Faire
would not have been the success it was.
Thank you to all the volunteers who answered our call to help White Elephant tag the week before the Faire. It was a
monumental task to sort and tag a record number of donations. You brought us peace of mind. And to all the students
and adults that helped set-up, tag items, buy food, volunteer time at the Faire, tear down the Faire and take a box of
leftover items to charity—we could not do it without each and everyone of you! Thank-you!
Finally, a very special thank you to all our Faire Leaders who have worked behind the scenes over the past year making
sure their area runs smoothly and at its best. Without them we would not have a Christmas Faire.
Many blessings to you all, Joanne & Ed Fitzpatrick ,Michele & John Barrette, 2018 Christmas Faire Co-Chairs
