Reading an Electrical Schematic
• Save the Schematic to Desktop and Launch Adobe Reader
• Using Adobe Reader to Navigate a Schematic• Find Harness Part Numbers• Collage Schematics• Adobe Acrobat Hot Keys• Reference Materials (Found on the Schematic)
Scanned Electrical Schematics
Some older electrical schematics are scanned and cannot be searched with this method. If in doubt, search for text that is known to exist within the schematic.
Save Schematic to Desktop
Save the Schematic to the Desktop first. Saving to the desktop allows access to other SIS information without having to download the schematic again if needed. This step does not have to be performed. The search methods that follow will work within SIS.
Save Schematic to Desktop
Open electrical schematic saved to the desktop. Adobe Reader will launch.
The saved electrical schematic is now open outside of SIS. Delete the electrical schematic file when finished.
Zoom In Until Text Can be Read
The saved electrical schematic is open outside of SIS. Delete the electrical schematic file when finished.
Select the schematic page
Zoom in until the text can be read. The ECM is a good place to start.
Launch the Text Search Tool
Select the Binocular (Text Search tool) located on the tool bar to search for text within the schematic.
Any text such as a keyword, part number or wire number can be used as search text.
Launch the Text Search Tool
The ECM provides examples of abbreviations used within the schematic. For example, switch is abbreviated sw. A search for level sw will produce results. A search for level switch will not provideresults. Enter level sw in the text search box.
Launch the Text Search Tool
Level SW was found seven times. The first result is highlighted in the schematic (blue) and listed in the results window. Click inside the results window and use the down arrow key to advance through theresults. The up arrow key will advance back to the top of the results.
Click inside the search results window and use the arrow keys on the keyboard.
Engine Oil Level SW Results
The ECM connection for the engine oil level switch and the engine oil switch is found. The part number and the harness designation is available by viewing the connector near the switch (B). Wire numbers can also be found with the text search tool.
Wire Number (C468) Search
The wire number for the engine oil level switch is C468. Select New Search and type C468 in the Word or Phrase search box and selectSearch.
Wire Number (C468) Search
One occurrence of wire C468 is highlighted within the breakout. A breakout is not a physical component on the product. The purpose of a breakout is to reduce the number of lines within a schematic and reduce confusion. The wire number will occur in the top breakout and the bottom breakout. Only one search result is displayed at a time.

Wire Number (C468) Search
The search is not a sequential beginning to end result although the beginning and the end of the wire is provided. Connectors will be shown because a wire number is provided in this location. Harnesses designations (usually a letter or letters) is placed near the connector.

Harness Part Number Search
The electrical harness part number can be found using the electrical schematic. A harness part number and designation table is included on the electrical schematics. Find a wire number or keyword on the harness to be replaced and start a search. All harnesses have wire numbers and this may be the best place to start searching if a keyword is not known.
It may be necessary to identify more than one wire if the wire is included in more than one harness. Search for a component on the harness to be replaced to double check the correct harness has been identified. Refer to the information that follows.
Each electrical schematic includes information to determine the harness designation. Schematics vary concerning the harness designation but that information will be included on the schematic. Use the keyword harness to find the information.
Harness Table Search
A search for the letter B would produce excessive results. Start a new search for the keyword harness and find the harness designation table in the schematic.
Harness Designation
Harness B Part Number is 231-5236
Connectors and Wire Properties
A wire passes through a connector and the designated number does not change. Wire 103 enters with highway L36, passes through CONN 11 and continues with highway L25. Back to TOC
SIS Web – Collage Schematics
A collage schematic is the same information as the main schematic. The collage schematic is divided into letter size illustrations that enable the user to print out only the sections/pages needed.
Collage schematics can be assembled to create a complete main schematic. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view Schematics
