Greetings from the Readercon Committee Welcome to another extraordinary Readercon! Our committee has worked hard to put together another fine weekend that celebrates imaginative literature of all kinds. This year we honor an unprecedented three guests - Hal Clement, Rudy Rucker, and Howard Waldrop; plus our memorial Guest of Honor, R. A. Lafferty. We are taking a rest in 2004, so this is the last Readercon fix available in legal form until 2005! Julianne Chatelaine & Amy West, Co-Chairs. We see him at so many conventions, where he's always so approachable. His earliest books have been around for a while now. He has that greatest-generation habit of understatement about his accomplishments. Perhaps we tag him "great, hard-SF writer" and move on. Well, Hal certainly is ter- rific at hard SF, among the best of those who have taken up that part of the writer's trade. How many fic- tion writers need to consider the possibility of being proven wrong, with mathematical precision? That's not a challenge to be taken for granted, and Hal meets it with rigorous scientific extrapolation, closely tied to current laboratory science. Seeing his unique skill at that is quite enough for many of us. But even if he were writing epic fantasy, he would be a fine writer, fluent in the use of under- statement, asking his readers to think for them- selves. See his recent Half Life, and think how other writers would have presented those charac- ters. At an age when most writers are retired, Hal is still writing, and always improving his craft. There's much more to say about Hal than just "hard SF," and this year Readercon will not take any of it for granted. 1990’s (e. g. Hacker and theAnts, Freeware) or the 21stcentury (e. g. Spaceland,Realware). As Rudy is alsoa mathematician, computerscientist, and professor, it isentirely possible that youmay have met him throughsome of his nonfiction work;such as: The Fourth Dimen-sion, Seek!, Infinity and theMind or Software Engineer-ing and Computer Games. Whether you are alreadyfamiliar with Rudy Rucker’s extraordinary literatureor are in need of an introduction, Readercon thisJuly is the place to be.

Did I mention you may have run across his newhistorical fiction novel about the Flemish artist Pe-ter Bruegel if you were wandering other parts ofthe bookstore?

Modern science fiction seems dominated by nov-els, and ever-longer ones at that. Readercon re-

members that the progressof the field was once nearlysynonymous with fiction atshorter lengths, and thatmany writers built their ca-reers on short stories. Somebrave writers still do, and weare delighted to have onewith us this summer. HowardWaldrop is known for takingyears to craft his exquisitestories. They are original to adegree rare in his peers, and

formidably researched, with background detailworthy of a novel. Whether tracing the alternatehistory of airpower in the Civil and Indian Wars, orthe possible survival of the dodo, or the fate of onewho loves the cinema too well, Waldrop brings usstories no one could improve upon. We're eagerlyanticipating this chance to consider the vital roleshort fiction - and Howard Waldrop - play in SFtoday.

Michael Matthew

Raphael Aloysius Lafferty (1914-2002) livedmost of his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He didn't startwriting until he was in his 40s, producing much ofhis work after he retired from his career as "a cor-respondence school electrical engineer." His firstpublished SF story was "Day of the Glacier" (1960),and he went on to write more than 200 short sto-ries and more than 20 novels, including Past Mas-ter (1968), Space Chantey(1968), and Okla Hannali(1972), a non-genre novel about the Trail of Tears. His short story "Eurema's Dam" tied for the 1973Hugo Award. He also received the World FantasyLifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and theCordwainer Smith Foundation "Rediscovery"Award in 2002.

Lafferty's legendary eccentricity extendedto his personal life. He never learned to drive. Healways wrote on a manual typewriter, which wasn'tquite as unusual as it seems today since he unfor-tunately retired from writing in the 1980s due to hisfirst stroke.

All good writers have distinct voices, butLafferty was unique. In an obituary for the Wash-ington Post, Neil Gaiman said that Lafferty "wasundoubtedly the finest writer of whatever it was thathe did that ever there was." And he was probablythe best at what he did that ever will be.
