Where was I When…? I know I’m not the most informed person in the world, especially the last couple months

when listening to the news means suspending my disbelief more than I need to when reading

a fantasy novel. It’s just hard. Still, I’m a member of most ALA divisions, and their

collective email helps me stay frustrated and angry over every library-related issue. But

where was I when the Department of Homeland Security announced they want visitors to the

US to hand over their social media passwords?

This is part of the extreme vetting process that keeps getting batted back and forth between

the executive and judicial branches of government. (See the results of my search here, then

pick an article.) I guess when you don’t want to be friends, you ask for their login

information.

After I’ve gotten over my lack of suspended disbelief, it seems funny. Isn’t this the

government that has spied on all international calls without a warrant? The government of

the Patriot Act, suspending law enforcement’s need for a warrant and suspending citizens’

rights to talk about being investigated? And they can’t hack into social media?

I do understand that safety comes at a price, but so does friendship. Maybe the government

has good reason to be extremely cautious, and maybe people from other countries living here

have good reason to be cautious.

What happens outside the library can spill over inside, but it doesn’t have to. If the mood is

tense outside, the American Library Association’s Office for Diversity, Literacy, and

Outreach Services can help you decide how to keep the mood calm inside. Contact them if

you find the open, accepting atmosphere in your library is changing. They can help you open

communication if the disadvantaged or disenfranchised feel unwelcome in your community

and/or your library.
