Dolphinsarewellknownfortheiragilityandplayfulbehaviour,makingthemafavouriteofwildlifewatchers.Manyspecieswill leapoutof thewater,spy-hop(riseverticallyoutofthewatertoviewtheirsurroundings)andfollowships,oftensynchronizingtheirmovementswithoneanother.Scientistsbelievethatdolphinsconserveenergybyswimmingalongsideships, a practice known as bow-riding. Dolphins live in social groups of fivetoseveralhundred.Theyuseecholocationtofindpreyandoftenhunttogetherbysurroundingaschooloffish,trappingthemandtakingturnsswimmingthroughtheschoolandcatchingfish.Dolphinswillalsofollowseabirds,otherwhalesandfishingboatstofeedopportunisticallyonthefishtheyscareupordiscard.Topreventdrowningwhilesleepingonlyhalfof the dolphin's brain goes to sleep while the other half remains awake so theycancontinuetobreathe.
