Read the poem in the left column and answer the questions in the right column.

The Twins by Henry S. Leigh

In form and feature, face and limb, I grew so like my brother, That folks got taking me for him, And each for one another. It puzzled all our kith and kin, It reached an awful pitch; For one of us was born a twin, Yet not a soul knew which. One day (to make the matter worse), Before our names were fixed, As we were being washed by nurse We got completely mixed, And thus, you see, by Fate’s decree, (Or rather nurse’s whim), My brother John got christened me And I got christened him. This fatal likeness even dogged My footsteps when at school, And I was always getting flogged, For John turned out a fool. I put this question hopelessly To everyone I know— What would you do, if you were me, To prove that you were you? Our close resemblance turned the tide Of my domestic life; For somehow my intended bride Became my brother’s wife. In short, year after year the same Absurd mistakes went on; And when I died—the neighbors came And buried brother John! [Public Domain]

Read the narrative below and answer the questions that follow.

The Old Juniper Tree by Robert Fulghum

There is a tree. At the downhill edge of a long, narrow field in the western foothills of the La Sal Mountains—southeastern Utah. A particular tree. A juniper. Large for its species—maybe twenty feet tall and two feet in diameter. For perhaps three hundred years this tree has stood its ground. Flourishing in good seasons, and holding on in bad times. “Beautiful” is not a word that comes to mind when one first sees it. No naturalist would photograph it as exemplary of its kind. Twisted by wind, split and charred by lightning, scarred by brushfires, chewed on by insects, and pecked by birds. Human beings have stripped long strings of bark from its trunk, stapled barbed wire to it in using it as a corner post for a fence line, and nailed signs on it on three sides: NO HUNTING, NO TRESPASSING; PLEASE CLOSE THE GATE. In commandeering this tree as a corner stake for claims of rights and property, miners and ranchers have hacked signs and symbols in its bark, and left Day-Glo™ orange survey tape tied to its branches. Now it serves as one side of a gate between an alfalfa field and open range. No matter what, in drought, flood, heat, and cold it has continued. There is rot and death in it near the ground. But at the greening tips of its upper branches and in its berrylike seed cones, there is yet the outreach of life. I respect this old juniper tree. For its age, yes. And for its steadfastness in taking whatever is thrown at it. That it has been useful in a practical way beyond itself counts for much, as well. Most of all, I admire its capacity for self-healing beyond all accidents and assaults. There is a will in it—toward continuing to be, come what may.

Read and follow the directions below using the space provided.

All of us have memories: some good, some not-so-good. Think about your life so far. Are there

particular memories that stand out to you? Make a list of several distinctive and meaningful

memories you have. Next to each memory in your list, write the emotion that you recall about the

experience. For example, if one of your memories is My first time on an airplane, you might label it

as exciting or terrifying. Similarly, if you share My grandmother’s funeral, you might label it as sad or

confusing. Try to include both good and bad memories on your list.

HOMEWORK: Consider your list and write a response to this question: If I could, would I choose to

forget some of my memories to spare myself the feelings of painful or embarrassing events if it meant

also forgetting the feelings of joyful or loving events? Why or why not?

Snowy Day Illustration

Thursday, December 6, 2012: Instead of picking up an ELA worksheet or writing prompt,

students will pick up a blank sheet of drawing paper. Three community canisters will be in

the center of each table individually containing markers, color pencils, and crayons. Students will

have 15 minutes of class time to spend on this assignment, which will be the cover page for this unit

in their binders.

Written on the board as students enter are the following instructions:

In The Giver, Lowry describes a snowy day and sled ride (the top of page 80 to the middle of page 82).

Read this section and visualize the scene. Take a piece of drawing paper and illustrate the passage as

you imagine it from Lowry’s description. Your finished drawing is due on Monday, December 10, 2012.

Unit 4: The Giver – Bell Work Answer Keys 11/26/12 – 12/21/12

Journal Responses

Journal responses are collectively worth 10 points and are assessed using a

holistic rubric scaled 10, 7, 4, 1, 0 (no credit is only earned for missing work).

JR #1: I am looking for thoughtful reasoning and the recognition of interdependence.

JR #2 Blue: Some suggestions include (but are not

limited to) a distinction between color and

black/white; Jonas’s world is troubling; Wilderness

as a symbol for the community being collectively

lost; The Giver has the weight of the world on his

shoulders; blackness of the jacket symbolizes

absence of love or emotion.

JR #2 Green: The connection is that there is a

caste system in Jonas’s community that

contradicts the seeming utopia (prejudices

based on professions). It also suggests a subtle

de-humanizing regard for reproduction that is

akin to robotic, automatic functions. Other

ideas as supported by thoughtful arguments.

JR #3 Blue: Check that the explanation makes sense

to the chosen passage and the student makes a

thoughtful argument.

JR #3 Green: One explanation could be that The

Giver wants to start Jonas’s training right away

either because his own time is limited or he is

eager to give away some of the painful

memories; a more astute observation would be

that the apology/accept-response custom is yet

another example of how Jonas’s community is

only an illusion of a utopia – people are not

being polite out of concern or respect, but out

of habit and rules. They are little more than

automatons acting human and Jonas gets the

opportunity to see what’s really going on.

Other ideas as supported by thoughtful

arguments.

JR #4 Blue: A possible answer could be that The

Giver feels guilty for

• asking Jonas to take on some of the pain

because he is accustomed to bearing the burden

himself.

• taking away Jonas’s “ignorance is bliss” life.

• putting Jonas in the position of deciding

whether or not to continue his life in the

community (previous Receiver asked for

release).

• Other ideas as supported by thoughtful

arguments.

JR #4 Green: One response could be that Jonas

realizes he has the power to make change

happen; he could also be frightened of having a

choice or of being an individual (since he is

unique due to his situation); he could be

frightened of being discovered breaking the

rules; other ideas as supported with thoughtful

arguments.

JR #5: Because the question calls for students to apply their understanding of the quote’s meaning to

their own experiences, responses will vary. Insightful replies will have supporting examples. In terms

of a connection to The Giver, I am looking for students to recognize that social constructions only exist

because individuals shape and empower them. We see what we want to see and Jonas’s community

does not really live in a utopia, but an illusion of one.
