There is a large variety of electrical drive engineering that exists in every industry and manufacturing sec-tor. Due to the complexity and level of automation, many modern electronic systems are extremely sus-ceptible to interference, such as radio interference voltages or line voltage deviations from sine-wave shape. This may cause reduced system availability, but it doesn‘t have to. Whenever reliable components, like our SIDAC reactors and filters, are used with optimal equipment design and rating, nothing will pre-vent a smooth operation.

When everything must run smoothly and safely:SIDAC reactors and filters

Harmonic currents: SIDAC line reactorsThe right choice for every network and application: SIDAC line reactors. For all standard applications, we offer reactors with a uk 2%-related voltage drop. For networks with very low line imped-ances, we can provide reactors featuring uk 4%. The inductance of SIDAC line reac-tors is characterized by a high linearity, which prevents troublesome DC link fluc-tuations as a result of load changes. Rated voltages of the line reactors are at least 40% higher than the operating voltage.

Frequency converter screening: SIDAC RFI suppression filters When interference from individual fre-quency converters needs to be reduced, SIDAC RFI suppression filters are indispen-sable. They can be easily assigned to frequency converter classes. They reduce radio interference voltages to the required values, thus ensuring that equip-ment in the vicinity is not affected by ra-dio waves. In conjunction with SIDAC line reactors, they provide an optimum screening of frequency converters.

Masters in minimizing charging current peaks: SIDAC output reactorsSIDAC output reactors reduce the charg-ing current peaks generated by a clock signal and the line capacitance. With un-shielded lines, motor cable lengths are up to 300 m and with shielded lines, the max. cable length is 200 m. Owing to a rated voltage of 500 V + 5%, SIDAC output reactors can be used with almost any common power network in Europe and North America.

Safe motor protection:SIDAC dv/dt filtersSIDAC dv/dt filters are often used with frequency converters in the chemical in-dustry. They maintain voltage rise ratios of < 500 V/µs and provide reliable motor protection by cutting voltage peaks to a defined value. Their rated voltage of 500 V + 10% and permissible clock frequency of 4 kHz make them suitable for the greatest variety of applications. With unshielded lines, the max. permissible motor cable length is 300 m, with shielded lines, it is 200 m.

Shaping voltages in sine waves:SIDAC sine-wave filtersIf a motor is to be supplied with an al-most sinusoidal-like voltage, as is typical for the chemical industry or some house-hold applications, SIDAC sine-wave filters should be used. They maintain voltage rise ratios of < 500 V/µs. They are excel-lent in noise-sensitive areas of applica-tion, since they reduce magnetic motor noise. With a rated voltage of 500 V + 10% and a permissible clock frequency of 8 kHz, they are suitable for many applica-tions. Long motor cables can, of course, be used here, too: the maximum lengths are 300 m for unshielded cables and 200 m for shielded cables.

Depending on the field of application, DC drives can provide a cost-effective alternative to AC drives using frequency converters. In these cases, SIDAC reactors and filters make a remarkable contribution by signifi-cantly increasing the operating safety and availability of power converter systems.

Proven technology for an increased availability:SIDAC reactors and filters for DC drives

System perturbations under control: SIDAC line/commutating reactors and SIDAC RFI suppression filtersWhether frequency converters or DC converter drives are used, their system perturbations are similar. This is why the same components are used at the line side as for AC drives: line and commutating reactors as well as RFI suppression filters. With large DC drives in particular, a sufficiently high inductance will be ensured – a requirement that is easily met by SIDAC reactors and filters with top-standard criteria such as robust design and high availability.

Reliable reduction of current ripples:SIDAC smoothing reactorsDC drives are typically used as main drives for printing machines, rolling mill or coiling drives as well as traction and hoisting gear drives in the crane and elevator industry. SIDAC smoothing re-actors reliably reduce current ripples in the motor circuit. Reactor models are available from the kW to the MW range. Upon request, we will rate and determine the required component parameters for you. You would certainly benefit from our long-term experience about sizing and rating drive components.

Smoothing reactors for decoupling on a printing machine: SIDAC in useIn the application example on the left, a 12-pulse DC main drive of a printing machine, smoothing reactors are used as decoupling reactors. The re-actors reduce the current ripples of the converter units and thus the harmonic stress of the DC mo-tor. This is a clear advantage in terms of motor service life. Using reactors for decoupling the two power converters enables two 6-pulse recti-fier sets to be operated in parallel, creating a 12-pulse phase effect at the primary side of the system transformer. In short: SIDAC reactors make a remarkable contribution to reducing sys-tem harmonics and improving system conditions.

In our networks, more and more consumers are using inductive loads. As a result, the harmonic load and THD-V (Total Harmonic Distortion – Voltage) of the network are rising. This increases the cost of electricity, maximizes transmission losses and adds to the stress of transmission and distri-bution systems. But there is a solution. The use of filter reactors prevents capacitors connected in the network from resonating with the network inductances at an undefined level. The filter reac-tors are tuned to a defined series resonant frequency with the capacitors, in consideration of an applied ripple control system.

Safe and stable network conditions:SIDAC filter reactors

High safety in extreme applicationsFilter reactors in reactive-power compensation systems are connected to the network in combi-nation with capacitors. Depending on the level of choking, capacitors and filters form a series reso-nant circuit with a defined resonant frequency:p = 5,67 % with fres = 210 Hz/p = 7 % with fres = 189 Hz/p = 14 % with fres = 134 Hz

A high harmonic load has already been taken into account for the rated current. In addition, SIDAC filter reactors permit continuous overload-ing, which may be 5% above the harmonic level. This ensures the safety for extreme applications. An integrated temperature monitoring system re-liably signals any overload. In addition, the high linearity of the inductance provides precise tun-ing of the filter circuit even when short-time surge loads are applied, during start-up.

Constant inductance under any conditionFilter reactors are interconnected with capacitors to form filter banks with a defined reactive power in kvar. SIDAC filter reactors are available in thecustomary sizes of 5 to100 kvar. They are charac-terized by a high degree of overloading capabili-ty, which increases the operational safety of the network in conditions of varying harmonic con-tents.

Depending on the level of choking, the linearity of the inductance remains constant up to 1.8 times the nominal current. This ensures that the filter cir-cuit remains tuned to the resonant frequency even when excessive currents are applied. Not even high inrush currents can saturate SIDAC filter reactors. The inductance remains constant and undefined detuning of the filter circuit is prevented.

SIDAC reactorsWhether simple or complex adaptations – indi-vidual solutions must fit the smallest detail in or-der to best achieve their technical and economi-cal objectives. Practice has shown that it is often the small modifications that turn a standard product into a customized solution. Often special cases are designed for a reactor and the connec-tion technique must be adapted so that no inter-ference radiation is emitted to the surroundings. More expenditures are required when solutions must be developed for large reactors with special applications. In shipbuilding, for example, con-struction and design must comply with interna-tional marine classifications. Limited space and high temperatures require solutions with forced cooling. Inductances with tappings and specified connection techniques may be necessary. Rail-way engineering and its special ambient condi-tions also require individual solutions, such as, vibration strength.

SIDAC filtersThe basis of a SIDAC combination filter is always an RFI suppression filter with the desired RFI sup-pression level A or B. This filter can either be combined with an output reactor or a line reactor – both installed in one metallic case. This is de-signed as a complete base, so that the frequency converter can be mounted on the filter, saving space. If no input or output reactor is required, the RFI suppression filter can also be placed in the case on its own. Depending on the require-ment, the filter connection cables are shielded or unshielded and, from the point of view of EMC, positioned in such a way that interference emit-ted to the surroundings is avoided as much as possible. The advantage of this design concept is that the system is very flexible – and can there-fore be tailored to individual customer needs. De-pending on the application, solutions with differ-ent technical features can be put into practice with optimal results.
