America’s Original Sin by Jim Wallis (Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America)
America’s problem with race has deep roots, with the country’s foundation tied to the near extermi-nation of one race of people and the enslavement of another. Racism is truly our nation’s original sin. In America’s Original Sin, Wallis offers a prophetic and deeply personal call to action in overcom-ing the racism so ingrained in American society. He speaks candidly to Christians-particularly white Christians - urging them to cross a new bridge toward racial justice and healing.

Together, We Make An Impact “From the beginning, United Methodist Women members have led the way in countless endeav-ors, from founding schools, hospitals, and clinics in the early 19th century to interrupting the school-to-prison pipeline, and working for maternal and child health today. Our membership is comprised of women from all backgrounds and experiences, compelled by their Christian faith to serve in the places they never imagined. They are unified in the pursuit of women's progress and their development as leaders in their churches, work settings, and communities. Organized for mission, United Methodist Women operate from a biblically based understanding that equips laywomen to grow in the faith through prayer, study, fellowship and action, and to work for social justice to promote a more equitable, safe and healthy world for women, children, and youth. This is what distinguishes United Methodist Women from other organizations, and attests to its longevity and relevance, today and especially in the years to come.” ----borrowed from the handout at Assembly entitled, “Together, We Are Building Our Legacy.” What a wonderful, powerful, BOLD statement of who and what we are! I have to say that this was my first assembly and yeah, I was WOWed by the multitudes of women from literally every-where. About 7,000 women gathered together. One of the phrases we repeatedly said was, “We gather because We must.” At first this was just a phrase but now I really think this is our mantra. We gather to learn, we gather to study, we gather to give service, we gather to share our joys and our sorrows, we gather to get out of the house, We Gather because We Must! Just by gathering together, we make an impact. We impact each other, we impact our church, we impact our community, we impact our cities and towns, we impact our state. Our gifts, talents, votes, and service make a difference to wom-en, children, and youth. Isn't that why we gather? To make a difference? Let's be like the rock in a small pond; the ripples are from small beginnings but just wait, as the ripples gather together, “Voila!” they become big, and bold, and beautiful. So at your next meeting think about how a rock in a pond creates many ripples. It starts small but becomes bigger and bigger. Why? Because Together, We Make an Impact. Celebrating Vancouver District UMW
On Saturday, June 2, 19 former district officers of Vancouver District came together to celebrate many years of Mission. Friendly labeled “Righteous Riotous Requiem Reunion”, participants submitted memories of their time as District officers and these were put together in a booklet for each as a way to honor the dissolution of Vancouver District as our new Crest to Coast District develops. The afternoon was filled with wonderful reflections and laughter. Many shared memories that highlighted the importance of team building, passion and creativity played in our work and edu-cation opportunities. Women came from Olympia, Centralia/Chehalis, Vancouver area, Portland, White Salmon and Yakima to enjoy our long time focus on our common “Purpose”. It was an amazing afternoon and reinforced the difference that United Methodist Women makes in the lives of so many. Our stories also honored many who are no longer with us but their pas-sion for mission continues to live within us.

Volunteer to read at a Nursing Home, Homeless Shelter, or Day Care Center to combine community service and reading program participation. Remember, children’s books count for everybody!
Just an update for everybody. I have already heard from a few units that have some new readers. Please remember to let your reading program representative if you have read ANY program books this year. I will begin to ac-cept unit reports at Mission u in July. As soon as I get the list of 2019 books, I will get it out to the units along with the updated library lists so you will be able to choose which books you want for your unit. At the District meeting in September, I will have your read-ing certificates to hand out and the books for you to pick up. Some extra ideas that have been submitted to me as ways to do community service and get your reading done at the same time. Visit a nursing home and read to a group of people (or a single person). Read to a group of chil-dren at a homeless shelter, day care center,
or your Sunday School class. Another idea is to have a book group that meets once a week and the members take turns reading from the book. Another thing that would be appreciated - please send me reading reviews and pictures of your displays so that they can be added to the district wide monthly newsletter and the web page set up for program resources across the district. If you would like to be added to the list of people who get the reading pro-gram newsletter or to a book review news-letter, please let me know. Who in your District is keeping track of the Unit Legacy stories? Our Seven Rivers “The Flame” has had several stories and a scrapbook to keep them in and share at Events. I plan to send around a sign-up sheet at the District Exec. Mtg. so each officer can include their unit or their own story. All Conference Officers have written their story. See the scrapbook. I will bring it to Mission u. So, here is a challenge to EACH DISTRICT: Let’s see which District can send me the most…..Yes, you can include any you have already written. BRING ON YOUR STORIES!! DEADLINE (just before Mission u) IS JULY 10th 2018. Let’s have a BIRTHDAY PARTY at our Annual Meeting in Vancouver and celebrate! Statement on Immigrant Parent - Child Separation
NEW YORK, June 4, 2018—As a women’s mission organization that has championed the needs of women, children and youth for near-ly 150 years, United Methodist Women can-not be silent as already vulnerable children suffer the trauma of being torn from their mothers and fathers at our nation’s borders in a policy designed to deter and punish the “least among us.” We are appalled by the disregard for the psychological, emotional and physical welfare of these children being exacted by the U.S. Justice Department. We are appalled that the welfare of children would be jettisoned to “punish” parents seeking asylum or fleeing untenable situations in their own countries. Separating children from parents is not a new policy, which makes the decision to impose a “zero tolerance” approach that will result in increased numbers of child-parent separa-tions even more horrendous. Ex-perts know the traumatic impact on immi-grant children of such separation because they have been observing and studying it for more than a decade. They know that children arriving on the border with their families seeking asylum already experience fear and lack basic provisions of food, shelter and protections. They know that tearing them from the one bit of security they still have—a caring parent—not only puts them at risk for physical assault but also makes them more susceptible to disease and irreparable mental stress. We know the harm we are doing to children with this policy, which makes this deliberate separating of children from their parents for the intent of punishing the family particularly vile. This must stop now. United Methodist Women has signed on to the “Women of Faith Cry Out to Keep Families Together” letter to U.S. Secretary of Home-land Security Kristjen Nielsen calling for an end to this practice.
As Christian women, we take seriously the many biblical passages directing us to show kindness to, not oppress, the stranger in our midst because we too were once strangers in the land and we “know the heart of a stranger” (Exodus 23:9). In addition, adults as individuals and certainly collectively as a society, have a special re-sponsibility to protect children. The Social Principles of The United Methodist Church, paragraph 162,C explains: “Children…are full human beings in their own right, but beings to whom adults and society in general have special obligations. …Moreover, children have the rights to food, shelter, clothing, health care and emotional well-being, as do adults, and these rights we affirm as theirs regardless of actions or inac-tions of their parents or guardians. In particu-lar, children must be protected from econom-ic, physical, emotional, and sexual exploita-tion and abuse.” And even more explicitly, as paragraph 162.H states: “We oppose immigration policies that separate family members from each other or that include detention of families with chil-dren….” The Justice Department’s punitive use of immigrant child-parent separation flouts these concerns for basic human decency. We call on the U.S. Justice Department to do right by the immigrant children on our bor-ders—surely among the weakest and most vulnerable among us—and immediately end the policy of separating children from their families. “Jesus didn’t sit at the temple and wait for people to come to him, and neither will we.”
Shannon Priddy is from Indianapolis, her message is “Going After a Life of Love,” taken from 1 Corinthians 14:1-3 The Message.
“Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it – because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you. Most of all, try to pro-claim God’s truth. If you praise God in private, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and God. But when you proclaim God’s truth in everyday speech, you’re letting others in on the truth so that they can grow and be strong and experience God’s presence with you.”
Lately, I have heard this a lot, “I don’t want to bother you, you must be busy.” I find the time to use the talents God gave me because I am accountable to my faith and my gifts. I found this quote and have decided to adopt it as my own. “Save the excuses. It’s not about ‘having’ time. It’s about making time. If it matters, you will make time.” It’s about dis-covering your gifts in pursuit of God.
We have more choices in our lives than ever before, when to spend our money and how to spend our time for God’s purpose in your life. Sharing the work of United Methodist Women
is letting others in on the truth of Jesus Christ through my work and words. God is not ask-ing us to take on tasks we don’t know how to do. God is asking us to use the gifts we al-ready have to proclaim God’s truth. Together, we have been working with local groups and organizations around the world for 149 years. We walk in the message of love.
God doesn’t want us to work alone. God shared the son so we would have an example. Jesus had disciples, so He didn’t have to be alone. Jesus told them to spread the good news. United Methodist Women members follow this example. We are not sitting waiting for people to come to us, we go to them.
We have all heard the platitudes, the beati-tudes, the mottos in life the keep us moving forward. Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it – because it does. Jesus didn’t sit at the temple and wait for people to come to him, and neither will we.
Blessings,
Marsha Aufenkamp
Women’s health has always been a priority or United Methodist Women. Dr. Clara Swain along with educator Isabella Thoburn were our first missionaries, sent to India in the 19th century to ensure Indian women received education and access to health care, both denied to them in a patriarchal society. Women’s access to health care is still under threat today, even in such rich nations as the United States. Because access to comprehensive health care for women of all ages is still lacking, maternal and child health remains a priority for United Methodist Women. We work to ensure our church and world do not leave women behind or allow women and children to die of preventable causes.
Maternal mortality is increasing in the United States. We must find out why and reverse the
trend – from exploring what local, state, and national policies restrict care, where funding is
lacking, what systemic issues create this environment, and how we begin to work together to fix
it. We owe it to our foremothers to continue their work. In the 21st century, women still need to
organize for mission and endow the future.
Blessings, Marsha PNW SPR & Legacy Liaison
