People First of WashingtonWe are people first, our disabilities are secondary!

• A strong and growing self-advocacy organization since 1981.

• One of the top self-advocacy organizations in the United States.

• They have developed 2 nationally recognized curriculums Reaching My Own Greatness (self-determination focus) and Mixed Voices a training program on inclusion.

• They also have numerous resources for training materials on self-advocacy, leadership, fund raising, etc.

• They created a book called No More BS that has been shared around the world and is in the Supreme Court Library.

• They have a number of other resources listed on their website.

What is Reaching My Own Greatness?

Training Stipulations• The training should be presented by a

person with a disability and their support person.

• The Units should be completed in order, although you can skip units.

• e.g. You can complete Units 1 & 3, in that order, but you would not want to complete 3 and then 1 or skip around

• Always give credit to People First of Washington

Support People• Can be teachers, parents, friends,

other family members

• Support people do not actively participate, they observe and step in when called on

Blindness & Visual Impairment

• This training is very visual.

• There are some large print materials, but for the most part it has not been adapted for individuals with blindness or VI.

• You could adapt your own materials for a group with blindness or visual impairment
