Memorable Melody:‘Heat Wave’

Teens across the nation spentthe summer of 1963 dancing to

this energetic love song, performed by Martha and theVandellas. Reaching No. 4 on

the pop chart and No. 1 on theR&B singles chart, “Heat Wave”

was one of the girl group’searliest hits and is credited with

helping create the distinctiveMotown sound. The song alsoearned the Vandellas their onlyGrammy nomination—the firstone ever for a Motown group.

Refreshingand Delicious

The Popsicle, that classicsummertime treat, isn’t exactly ahealth food. But the refreshingsnack on a stick can help youstay hydrated on hot, sunny

days. Plus, ice pops are lower incalories and fat than desserts like

ice cream, and, depending onthe brand, may be sugar-free orcontain additional nutrients if

made with real fruit.

Senior Citizens Day“For all they have achieved

throughout life and for all theycontinue to accomplish, we oweolder citizens our thanks and a

heartfelt salute.” With thosewords, President Ronald Reaganproclaimed Aug. 21, 1988, the

first National Senior Citizens Day,now an annual celebration.

Time for a TreatNational Root Beer Float Day is

celebrated on Aug. 6. If youhaven’t had a root beer float sinceyou were a kid, perhaps it’s timeto partake. Simply put a scoop of

vanilla ice cream in a tall glass andadd root beer. Tastes like summer!

Build Balanceby Swimming

In addition to enjoying a gentle,low-impact exercise, seniors have

another reason to take upswimming: fall prevention.Multiple studies show that

swimmers have a 30 to 50 percentlower risk of falling. Relying on

the water for support helps buildstronger core muscles, whichcontribute to better balance.

To Your Health: Smile!Researchers at the University of

Kansas found that smiling lowersstress, and it doesn’t matter if

you’re really happy or just fakingit. Participants in the study who

put on a smile—fake or genuine—had lower heart rates than thosewith neutral expressions when

doing a stressful task.

Brain Boost forBook Lovers

People often say the book is betterthan the movie. Scientists who

study brain function agree.Research shows processing

information by reading it givesyou more of a mental workout

than simply watching it unfold ona screen. Reading activates your

imagination and insight. Exerciseyours on National Book Lovers

Day, Aug. 9.

Take a Nap to BoostYour Brain

Whether you call it a catnap, adoze or a siesta, experts say getting

a short snooze each day canenhance your memory. Sleep is an

essential function in absorbingnew information, because it

allows the brain to clean out itsshort-term memory storage.

Research confirms that daytimenapping helps solidify new data

and memories by moving them tothe brain’s long-term storage

areas, where they can be retainedfor future use. Experts say just a

15- to 20-minute nap can bebeneficial.

Write It DownNeed help remembering

something? Write it down.Handwriting engages more partsof the brain than typing, and it is

easier to remember somethingonce you’ve written it on paper.

A Slice Is NiceAdd some slices of tomato to

sandwiches and salads. Tomatoescontain lycopene, which helps

protect your skin from sundamage and can improve

circulation.
