Comma Rule # 1Use commas to separate items in a series
Example:I had apples, cereal, and orange juice for breakfast this morning.
I’ll have pickles ketchup mustard and onions on this hot dog.
Let’s do one example together…
Use commas between coordinate adjectives (words that describe nouns).

What is a compound sentence?
Joe read the book and saw the movie.
Joe read the book, and then he saw the movie.
How can we tell if it is a compound sentence?
** We only need to use a comma in the second example
This class is exciting but it is hard.
He will be elected tomorrow and he will be a good leader.
Let’s try some..first we need to identify the conjunction words
Use commas before and after a quotation Example:
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many things.”
**Remember…at the end of your quote, punctuation goes INSIDE the quotation marks

What do we need to make a complete sentence?
What is a fragment?
• A sentence fragment is only a piece of a sentence.
• A fragment sentence does not express a complete thought.

Sometimes part of the sentence may be missing.

A run-on (or run-on sentence) is a sentence that really has TWO sentences (or complete ideas) INCORRECTLY combined into one.
Run-On Sentences
The girls played basketball the boys played tennis.
Examples:
Einstein is famous for E=mc Edison is famous for the invention of the light bulb.

Americans shake hands when they meet the Japanese bow.
Directions:
There are four stations around the room (they are doubled so you don’t overcrowd)
Identify if the sentence at the station is a fragment or run-on by circling your choice
