Dry Rising Mains Installation
Dry and wet rising mains are intended for use by the fire brigade or other trained personnel. They provide a readily available means of delivering considerable quantities of water to extinguish or to prevent the spread of fire.
Dry risers are vertical mains fitted into staircase enclosures or other suitable positions, with outlet valves on each floor and inlets fitted at ground level to enable the fire brigade to connect to the water supply.
Wet risers are pipes kept permanently charged with water either from a storage tank (via a booster pump) or direct from the town’s main water supply.
Before installing dry or wet rising mains the exact requirements of the local fire brigade must be ascertained.

AR – AFFF (3% – 6%) - Not suitable for extinguishersA synthetic alcohol resistant aqueous film forming foam concentrate for extinguishing and securing flammable hydrocarbon and polar solvent liquid fires. A polymer additive protects the foam blanket from the destructive action of polar solvents. It is used in high-risk situations where hydrocarbons and polar solvents are stored, processed, or transported. It is ideal for industrial and municipal fire departments. Typical applications include bulk storage tanks, process areas, loading racks, marine terminals, military bases and airports.
3% FP - Not suitable for extinguishersA fluoroprotein firefighting foam concentrate for extinguishing and securing flammable hydrocarbon liquid fires. Sealed Lead Acid Batteries
A guide to SLA Battery back up capacity
The capacity of SLA batteries fitted to the Control and Indicating Equipment is determined by the type of system installed (L or P) and is specified in BS 5839 Part 1 1988, section 16.5 Duration of the standby supply the following is a simple guide to calculate the capacity.
1. Establish the total standby current drawn by all devices connected to and including the Control and Indicating Equipment. Add all the current readings together. Don’t forget to pay attention to the decimal places. i.e. mA 10-3, μA 10-6, etc.
2. Establish the total alarm current drawn by all devises connected to and including the Control and Indicating Equipment. Add all the current readings together. Don’t forget to pay attention to the decimal places. i.e. mA 10-3, μA 10-6, etc.
3. Multiply the standby current by the number of hours standby required.
4. As all the L and P systems require an alarm period of 30 minutes (except in very special cases, see standard) total alarm current should be multiplied by 0.5 (half of one hour)
5. Add the results of 3 and 4 together
6. BS 5839 Part 1 specifies that the batteries are able to provide its designed standby duration after 24 hours charge from it’s discharge state. To allow for this the capacity of the battery should be increased by 20% to overcome problems with charge rates.
Example
The system has to meet the requirements for an L type environment, (life safety) and is supervised at intervals of not more than 12 hours.
Total standby current multiplied by 24 hours = 35.781mA x 24 = 0.858744 Ah.
Total alarm current multiplied by 30 min. = 1.280A x 0.5 = 0.64 Ah.
Add the standby Ah and the Alarm Ah = 0.858744 + 0.64 = 1.498744 Ah
Add 20% margin for charging. = 1.8 Ah.
It is common practice to choose the nearest available size moving up a size if
necessary. So in this case the next available size will be 2.2 Ah.

Information UpdateFire fighting foams containing Perfluorooctane Sulphonate (PFOS) The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) issued a consultation paper in October 2004 on UK proposals to introduce regulations on the restriction of use and marketing of perfluorooctane sulphonate.
PFOS, recently proved to be bioaccumulative, persistent, toxic and a risk to the aquatic and terrestrial environment, have been used in fire fighting foams for many years.
Formulators, producers and users of PFOS in fire fighting foams will be affected by these proposals. It is thought that as substitutes exist for fire fighting foams a time limited derogation will be put in place before a total phase out of PFOS. If these proposals go ahead, fire fighting foams containing PFOS will have to be incinerated at high temperature.
How do I know if the extinguishers I buy contain PFOs?
The FIREPOWER range have been PFOS free since 2001.
Disability Discrimination Act 1995: Part III Since the 1st of October 2004 service providers have had a legal requirement to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to their premises to ensure disabled people can use their services.
Who is affected by the DDA?
Everyone that provides paid or free goods, facilities or services to the public is defined as a service provider. Eg. Hotels, Restaurants, Retail shops, Schools, Hospitals, Theatres, Airports etc...
What types of adjustments need to be made to the premises?
These adjustments relate to the building’s ‘physical features’ i.e. entrances/exits, floor layouts, toilet facilities, printed materials, fire & safety provisions etc...
What is considered ‘reasonable’?
The Act does not list what particular adjustments should be made to a building. The adjustments made will depend upon the size and resource of the service provider and how practical it is to make these changes.
Disability can take many forms such as sight or hearing impairment, physical and mobility problems, mental health problems or learning difficulties. These disabilities need to be taken into account when developing a fire safety strategy.
Thomas Glover offers a range of products that can help customers tailor their fire safety strategy to reflect the requirements of the DDA:
• Supplementing Fire Alarm bells with visual flashing beacons to alert the hard of hearing
• Braille and tactile signs specifically designed for blind and partially sighted people
• Evacuation chairs and Dorgard to ease mobility through the building

Fire (Scotland) Act
The Scottish Executive is proposing new primary legislation to consolidate existing fire regulatory requirements and to reform the operation of the fire and rescue service.
For more information please log on to www.scotland.gov.uk
Fire Safety Order (FSO) The Fire Safety Order will encompass and replace all existing fire legislations:
• Fire Precautions Act 1971
• Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997/1999
• Management of Health and Safety in the Workplace Regulations 1999 • + 100 pieces of related legislation and only apply in England and Wales.
Who will be affected by the FSO?
• Non domestic premises
• All employers
• Self employed
• Anyone responsible for a building to which the public have access
• Voluntary organisations
All premises affected by the FSO will have to carry out a fire risk assessment.
Aim of the FSO:
• Reduce the risk of fire and the spread of fire
• Extend protection explicitly to all occupants, not just employees
• Protect the fire fighters
• Protection of property
