    1. OVERVIEW

The project "RE-live @ Bugis Junction: Rethinking the way you live" was held on World

Environment Day on 5th June 2009. This was the second year for the volunteers in ECO

    Singapore to organize this event.

The initiative is a youth lead event that intends to drive the public to RE-think and RE-

live their existing habits. And it is not that difficult at all. There are already existing

means to do so with all the existing market products that are readily available. Youth

are the key drivers in this initiation to promote these lifestyle changes. This project set

the precedence of all future youth lead and environmental events that actively

engage and empowers youth on lifestyle change.

In 2009, RE-Live! saw together over 20,000 members of the public over the span of 3

days. The event also brought together about 300 youth from different Universities,

Polytechnics and Junior Colleges to conceptualize and execute the full project.

As the organizing committee, we aimed to set RE-Live! as a trademark event on

every World Environment Day in Singapore as the Youth & Environment Day for youth

to express them to reach out to fellow youth and members of the public on leading a

    more sustainable lifestyle.

    2.2.2. LIVE GREEN Synchronized Action

    Description:

The Synchronized Action served as the climax of the first day. During this segment,

volunteers will perform a series of actions in accordance with cues given by an

Emcee. These actions involved a total of 6 items which represented the components

of the overarching theme of sustainable living. It was our aim to covey to the public

the importance of sustainable living through these symbolic actions and show that

youths can take the lead in such a green movement.

The objectives of the Synchronized Action are to convey, through symbolic actions,

the importance of a sustainable lifestyle; to recognize youths as environmental

advocates and empower them to take the lead in the green movement

During the Synchronized Action, 6 different items were used to represent the 6

aspects of sustainable living. The items and their significance were as follows:

    Waste material Reusable bags

All of the other items were packaged in a cloth bag made of recycled material.

This was sharply in contrast to the single-use plastic bags which were often used in

supermarket chains and convenience stores. The use of reusable bags displayed

one of many steps that the public can take to cut down on environmental

    pollution and landfills.

    Biodiversity Stuffed Toys

A large variety of stuffed toys were used to demonstrate the wide variety of

organisms in our ecosystem. This would include plants and animals of different

species. This was therefore representative of biodiversity in our everyday lives.

    Water NEWater

NEWater represented a successful attempt to conserve and reuse water by the

government of Singapore. In many other countries, similar processes are used

to purify water and cut down on wastage. This initiative was therefore apt to

represent the sustainable use of water, and can raise awareness as well as

inspire a concerted effort from the public.

    Shelter Umbrellas

A small umbrella was provided to each participant. The simplicity of this shelter

from wet weather will demonstrate that it is not necessary to use

large amounts of resources or materials to construct

complicated dwellings. Rather, small amounts of resources, when used

appropriately, can create a cost-effective shelter. An added benefit of using

umbrellas was that participants can take shelter in the event of wet weather.

    Food Apple

Food was come in the form of a apple to showcase the most sustainable source

of food. Land that was used for breeding cattle and other livestock can be used

to support many times that amount of food in the form of wheat and vegetables.

This display encouraged the public to choose a diet that is more sustainable and

    centered on vegetable consumption.

    Energy Fan

Each participant was provided with a fan, which represented energy. And this

provided a live example of how energy alike canserve as a substitute for fossil

    fuels and other non-renewable sources.

    2.3.1. ECO Exhibition/Trail

    Description:

    ECO Trail

The ECO Trail invited Vegetarian Society, Tzu Chi Foundation to set up booths at the

area with highest consumer traffic in front of the MRT station. The objective of ECO Trail

was to improve the understanding of Singaporeans of Volunteer Welfare

Organizations(VWOs) currently engaged in conservation efforts. These organizations

showcased their activities and the opportunities for volunteers to sign up for projects.

    ECO Exhibition

Exhibitions that focused on six themes: water, waste, biodiversity, shelter, food and

energy were held. The ECO Exhibition adopted a more interactive approach. Mini-

activities and fun games were interwoven.

Two weeks before RE-Live! , two 2.5 hours volunteer training session were held in

Singapore Polytechnics and Raffles Junior College respectively. Over 200 Youth

volunteers were trained to engage the public meaningfully to share with them on how

they can each adopt a lifestyle that would make a difference not only to the

environment, but how it would also benefit them.

The exhibitions were broken down into six themes, namely water, waste, biodiversity,

shelter, food and energy. Exhibition panel and volunteer T-shirts were designed into six

different colors in order to capture the attention of the general public.

    4. REFLECTION AND RECOMMENDATION

    4.1. Good Job

    1. Organization committee are proactive and dedicated.

    2. Committee members are well-trained before embarked on the execution

    of the project.

    3. Organization committee got good back-end support by ECO Singapore.

    4. Past records of RE-Live! And ECO Singapore made it easier to get external

support such as volunteers, volunteer welfare organizations and companies

    related to logistics and welfare.

    4.2. Improvement Needed

    1. At the beginning of the project, the involvement structure and

commitment level was not clearly conveyed within the various organizers,

especially ECO Singapore and Earthlink NTU.

    2. Too many changes had been done throughout the planing, which

    delayed the stage of execution.

    3. Committee members came at different times which made it very hard to

hand over responsibilities and affected team operation norms.

    4. Communication within the organization committee is not smooth and fast

which further decreased the efficiency of operation.

    5. Team meeting was not conducted in an efficient way.

    6. Volunteer induction was at the last minute and was not able to engage

sufficient number of those who registered.

    4.3. Main Recommendations

    1. Organizing committee can be formed in January. Six months' preparation

    would be sufficient.

    2. The main organizing team must be come into existence at the same time.

    3. Prior to embarking onto the project as a partnering organisation, both

parties, namely ECO Singapore and the student organisations must

communicate clearly what the involvement structure, commitment level

and expectation are in order to avoid differences in vision

    and actual operation.

    4. Committee members may use a better communication channel to update

each other, such as google site, google calendar or professional project

management softwares in order to track the process of planning.

    5. A proper team building and bonding needs to be exercised prior to

    forming the committee.

    6. Responsibilities and KPIs need to be set for each portfolio within the
