With some thirty paintings by eight different artists, ac-companied by a range of sculpture, this exhibition ex-plores different approaches of using the human fig-ure in compositions and in the three-dimensional form.

For some artists, the presence of a person in a room or in a landscape provides an immediate reference for scale and perspective. The human form also gives intrigue, comfort and familiarity to a painting and whether it is used as a literal part of artwork’s narrative or in a more abstract capacity where the figure becomes an effective vehicle for colour and form, it is a motif that is constantly returned to as the focus of a composition.

David Inshaw born in Wednesfield, Staffordshire 1943, studied painting at Beckenham School of Art, Royal Academy Schools and in Paris under a French Government scholarship. He taught painting and print making at the West of England College of Art in Bristol 1966-1975.

In 1972 he formed the Broadheath Brotherhood with Graham and Ann Arnold. In 1975 David Inshaw was appointed Fellow Commoner in Creative Art at Trinity College, Cambridge. He collaborated with director Geoffrey Haydon on ‘Between Dreaming and Waking’ as part of the BBC ‘Arena’ arts series, 1981-2. In 1983 he left the Brotherhood of Ruralists and started etching with Jack Shirreff at the 107 Workshop in Wiltshire.

David has paintings in many private and public art collections including the Arts Council of Great Britain, the British Council, City of Bristol Art Gallery & Museum, Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery and is well represented in the Tate Gallery.

David Brayne RWS, born in 1954, studied at Nottingham School of Art, Gloucestershire College of Art and Exeter University.

He was elected as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2001 and has exhibited widely and been awarded a number of prizes, including first prize in the National Open Art Competition, 2004 and The Benton Prize at the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London.

John O’Connor studied at The Sculpture Academy in London and taught sculpture at The Art Academy. He has worked on various public and private commissions around the country and has exhibited in venues across the country including London.

John feels that art is a direct and effective way of connecting with humanity. His works are emotional and poetic, thus leaving a lasting impression on the mind of the viewer.

Rose Hilton, born Tonbridge , Kent, studied at Beckenham School of Art and in 1953 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London.

On her return from a year in Rome she met the artist Roger Hilton and married in 1965 and set up home together in a house on Botallack Moor, St Just, where they lived until Roger’s early death in 1975.

Rose has steadily built a reputation as a major St Ives artist. At the recent retrospective held at Tate St Ives in January-May 2008, the paint-ings were chosen to reflect the increasingly abstract nature of her work, though she rarely abandons figuration entirely. Though best known for her sensual nudes and lusciously coloured interiors, there were also landscapes on display, in which the leap towards abstraction is perhaps most apparent.

An in-depth study on Rose Hilton by Andrew Lambirth, critic for the Spectator, was published in June 2009.

Arthur Neal, born March 1951, attended Camberwell School of Art. A member of the New English Art Club, Neal regularly shows at the Royal Academy Summer Show, private galleries in London and the South East.

He taught at New Metropole, Folkestone and Maidstone College of Art.

John Wragg RA attended York School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the late 1950s. Elected a Royal Academician in 1986, he has held solo exhibitions regularly including in London and Paris.

Awards include the Art Council Major Award, Sainsbury Sculpture Prize and the Sainsbury Award. Public collections include Tate Gallery, Arts Council of Great Britain, Israel Museum, Jerusalem, National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Wellington Art Gallery, New Zealand and Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Ralph Brown RA was born in Yorkshire in 1928. He studied at Leeds and Hammersmith Art Schools and at the Royal College of Art. He was a part-time tutor at the RCA Sculpture School from 1958 for many years. He first exhibited in London in 1953 and has shown work widely since then, with solo and group exhibitions in the UK, Continental Europe and the USA.

Ralph Brown’s sculptures are in public collections in many countries and in private collections around the world. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1968 and is now a Senior Royal Academician. Ralph has worked as a sculptor for nearly 60 years and his work has evolved over this period, while always remaining true to his obsession with the human figure.

John Emanuel, born in Lancashire 1930, moved to Cornwall in 1964 and shortly after was elected member of Penwith Society of Arts. In 1990 his etchings were included in a portfolio series to raise funds for the building of Tate St Ives and the Tate has since commissioned further etchings from him.

His work has featured in ’The Diserning Eye’, Mall Galleries, London, Galerie Pelar, New York as well as other galleries in Cornwall and London.

Jesse Leroy Smith studied painting at the Royal Academy Schools and Norwich School of Art.

He is a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists and regularly exhibits his work in London and Cornwall. His work is featured at the Royal Academy Summer shows and Tate St Ives.

For Hilton Fine Art’s ‘Re-Figured’ exhibition, Jake Paltenghi is showing his ‘Bronze Ballet’ series, a tribute to his father, David Paltenghi who was an eminent ballet dancer and choreographer. Each of these scukptures is a unique one-off piece.

Jake exhibits his sculpture and paintings regularly in Bath, London, New York and in the south of France. Awards include the Hunting / Observer Prize 1991, 1993 and 1994. His work is in Christies, London corporate collection as well as many important private collections in Europe and the USA.

Clive Jebbett, born in 1951 in North London, attended Colchester School of Art. As co-founder of the Essex Arts Circus, Clive exhibited in small group and one-man shows. In 1974, he became exhibition organiser for York Arts Centre whilst continuing to exhibit in both group and solo shows. He then concentrated on painting full-time in 1998.

Clive’s paintings are currently in private and corporate collections in across Europe, Canada and the USA.
