3/26/13 Re PARKING ATTENDANT at INDIAN WELLS TENNIS
TOURNAMENT
IVE encountered this same fellow previously if I recall
correctly. I believe he was also doing parking for eitherthe Gerald or Betty Ford funeral ceremony. I believe he
had a motorcycle parked next to him (presumably his
motorcycle) at that time and struck up a conversation that
seemed to have a pretext to it (as if he was trying to size
me up). Now, at the 2013 Indian Wells tennis tournament I
arrived on a small bicycle which I use for short trips at
events such as this so that I dont always have to pay-to-
park (yes, I do try to save money and am proud of it
would rather spend the various event parking fees that
range from $5 to $25 on helping othersvia church and/or
charitable contributions).
As I entered the parking area this tall anglo parking
attendant BELLOWED AT ME I WANT YOU TO TURN or
something to that effect. The language along with the
tone he used was CLEARLY intentionalwith the purpose
of establishing command (ie power & control). It
reminded me of a bad cop who abuses his or her position
for the sake of power & control. It was extremely
overbearing to such an extent it could NOT be ignored. I
yelled back. I already KNEW where to park my bikehad
been there previously and had talked to a different
parking attendant about bike parking. But regardless, I
didnt need to be told in the tone and choice of words heused. It was INAPPROPRIATE .
So I YELLED BACKI had NO CHOICE the way he was
trying to establish power & control was almost like using1

fighting words. And this was a tennis tournament,
attended by 99.9% polite persons with no other desire
than to relax and enjoy some good competition. This was
NOT a Raiders football game, nor a Dodgers baseball
game with 50% unruly, uncivilized persons who need toknow theres somebody in control. This is a professional
tennis tournament attended by decent people, including
myself, a college (plus) graduate, a professional person, a
good citizen, and a Christian.
Whatever the issue may be with this maybe-not-so-young-
anymore man, I hope you can find a way to address it.Believe it or not, lasting memories of events such as these
often begin & end in the parking lot, regardless of how
nice it is inside. And I want to tell you that it was a great
event on the inside. Most of the ushers & servers et al
were polite and pleasant I felt like they were enjoying
the event as well, not just paid workers doing their job.
That makes a BIG difference. And I didnt feel intimidated
by tons of security officers or sheriffs deputies. I saw afew but they were in the background, not the foreground.
After parking & locking my bike I made one attempt to try
to talk with this parking attendant. I walked toward him
but again he struck such a commandeering power-&-
control stance it was IMPOSSIBLE to reconcile the matter.
I ended up YELLING AGAINtrying to communicate to him
that hes NOT THAT IMPORTANT! I myself went to
college & graduate school and dont even think Im thatimportant. Yet this guy apparently thought he was a
military commander in the midst of battle. Did he want to
make me and other people FEEL SMALL ?! What is it with
people in their bully pulpits that causes them to be
belittling towards others in big or small ways? It happens2

every now and then with a cashier, a clerk, a parking
attendant, a traffic cop, et al. What causes them to want
to try to ruin another persons day or event?
Whatever the case may be this is my attempt to bring it tothe attention of somebodyanybody..at Indian Wells
tennis tournament, which I have been attending for many
years now going back to when Andre Agassi was playing
(and still dating Brooke Shields)back to when I lived in
Coachella Valley (and now just visit periodically several
times a year).
Most people who have a bad experience just stifle it inside
themselves..they dont write or complain..they try toforget and ignore itand so I am sure that I am writing
for a few others as well. I did NOTHING to deserve being
mistreated by this parking dude, and HOPE it doesnt
happen ever again. If I do see him again I will try to get a
photo and/or name. Sincerely, Frankly Anonymous
