Coach of the Year Award

2

Sunday’s game will decide where the bling goes. The winners will be crowned World Champions, receive the RDFL Trophy, and of course the victorious players will get their hands on some pretty ostentatious jewellery.

However, there is one award which doesn’t come with a hunk of metal but which is just as well respected and sought after amongst the coaching fraternity: Coach of the Year.

Only peers can vote for the top coach of the season and that’s what makes it such a respected award. To be raised up on a pedestal by your rivals and acknowledged as having done the best job of coaching, is to achieve respect.

Often the winner of the award isn’t the guy who wins the Championship or the most games but the guy considered to have achieved the most with the tools at his disposal.

The votes have been counted and without further delay here are the results:

Coach of the Year: Greg (Houston Texans) 42 percent

Runner Up: Nick (Seattle Seahawks) 28 percent

Third: Attyla (Indianapolis Colts) 14 percent

Fourth: Mike7273 (Dallas Cowboys) 14 percent

Congratulations to Greg.

Welcome to the Sunshine City of Miami, Florida.

Analysis from RDFL Bowl VIII Winner: Baltimore Ravens GM

Seattle are the franchise that many teams try to emulate, they may have only won one bowl (VII), but are the team with the most wins in the history of the RDFL and a flag ship franchise. Indianapolis hasn’t been back to the bowl game since the loss to the 49ers in RDFL Bowl III but has been on the cusp of greatness for the last few seasons and this could be their time. Seattle’s only loss this season was in week 16 to the Colts so though there may be a revenge factor for the fans, as this cost the Seahawks the perfect season, for the Seahawks franchise all they will care about is winning the title.

Both teams are built to win and continue to make moves to stay at the top, in fact both have benefitted from decisions we have made in Baltimore over the last few seasons.

10

Seattle traded for WR Larry Fitzgerald, and then traded him to Dallas for an early 1st round pick that was used on DE Bank. Then last season Baltimore moved up in the draft to select WR Willis, but when we selected QB Greenham instead it allowed the Colts to pick up the rookie WR who has turned into an excellent player.

These teams are strong offensively with Seattle having one of the best QB’s ever in Vance, quality receivers in Humble and Dauber as well as TE Stargell. The strong running game has seen Hitchcock replacing Jackson, so the defenses can’t focus on the pass or run attacks without allowing big gains from the other element. The Colts have Roethlisberger at QB; rookie WR Willis joins Morton and 2nd year receiver Carlisle, while rookie RB Wayne had an excellent season. Again it’s about balance drop back in coverage and Wayne will blast holes on the ground. Step up to stop the run and any of the trio of WR’s could get behind you and score.

The keys to this game are how well the Colts can pass the ball, I know it sounds crazy as the week 16 victory was won on the back of a 202 yard rushing day. However if Seattle can afford to put either Considine or Schoonover in the box to limit the effectiveness of rookie RB Wayne running behind the right hand side of the line (RG Draper and RT Cascini) and therefore allowing DE Banks to concentrate on pass rush then it could be a long day for Roethlisberger.

11

If the passing game produces early then those safeties will need to drop into deeper coverage to assist Boone and Carvin to cover rookie Willis, Carlisle and Boldin. This will put pressure on the Seattle front seven that has allowed a league worst 5.17 yards per rush and give Wayne and Russell opportunities to run behind a solid OL.

Seattle on the other hand will be looking for Vance and co to attack the Colts secondary; CB’s Adams and Svensk have been solid while rookie FS Kirkland may be the key for the Colts. If Kirkland can help keep Humble and Dauber from making a big play deep, and SS Gomez can keep TE Stargell quiet than the Colts will hope to be able to outscore the Seahawks. In the last meeting Humble caught 13 passes for 142 yards and 2 TD’s, Dauber 7 for 113 and TE Stargell 11 for 98 and a TD. If these numbers are repeated it is unlikely that the Colts can win. One worry for Indianapolis will be that DT Hotchkiss is questionable and if he doesn’t play then the there will be a drop in pressure on Vance up the middle and there may be room for RB Hitchcock to improve on his disappointing average per carry. The Colts will check on OLB Terry but it is expected he will play

Last year was an amazing season for the Ravens, whoever wins this one will have the same level of elation, Seattle want that 2nd title to move closer to the 49ers record of 3 bowl wins, while Indianapolis will

12

want to win it all for the first time and wipe away the pain from their previous appearance in the big game. Whatever happens both teams have been awesome this season. Make sure you watch all the action as it unfolds live on the RDFL site and from my side, good luck to both franchises.

RDFL Network talks to Seattle GM: Nick

Q: The Seattle Seahawks are accustomed to winning and success is something your organisation must be familiar with. How exciting is it to reach your third RDFL Bowl game?Actually I don't find it very exciting. I firmly believe we are the best team in the league

13

and that comes with a lot of pressure. We have an outstanding regular season record, but only one bowl win. I'm more nervous than excited, we need to convert.

Q: At the start of the 2013 season, were you confident that the Seahawks were a Championship contender? Did you think this could be your year?Without wishing to appear arrogant, yes I was confident. I think we have been the best team in the league for many years.

Q: After yet another great season, how do you manage to keep your coaching staff and players motivated for the big games? It’s not a great season for us unless we live up to our true potential and play to our ability. We have underachieved in the playoffs, that’s our motivation.

Q: Can you single out two players, one offensive and one defensive, that have really excelled and driven Seattle on to glory this year and can you describe what they bring to the team?Justin Vance and Lonnie Humble are the driving force behind this team. I will concentrate on Vance. He brings a calmness, he doesn't make many mistakes. He doesn't try to do too much, he is almost robotic at times. He evades the pass rush like few others, and isn't frightened to throw the ball

14

away when necessary. That’s what makes him great.

On defense it’s DE Bennie Banks. He is the key. We are lost without him. At times things might be going bad, Banks always seems the one constant dependable force. He will pop up, and change the whole momentum of the game. Simply an impact player.

Q: Obviously, the Seahawks only lost one regular season game in 2013 but of all your other opponents, which team pushed Seattle the closest?I think Atlanta are the best team we have faced. Probably the 2nd best team in the league.

Q: Which other RDFL teams have impressed you this season and why?Dallas impressed me. They brought more than I thought they would, or could.

Q: Looking to the future, most of Seattle’s star players are contracted into the next season and beyond. What are the priorities for the team as you look to strengthen the roster?BPA. Let’s see who is available.

Q: Which player from any other team would you most like to have on the Seahawks roster and why?

15

Dexter Walters. With Lonnie Humble I think we would knock any defense flat, you couldn't cover both those guys with Vance throwing them the ball.

Q: How do you rate your opponents today, the Indianapolis Colts? They are a very good team. Obviously they are or they wouldn't be in the Bowl. I believe we are better though, if we play to our potential I don't think they can beat us. It’s all about that as far as I'm concerned. Respect to them, but I think we have the edge. If we blow up they could slaughter us, we play to our potential I think we beat anyone.

RDFL Network talks to the Indianapolis GM: Attyla

Q: This is the second time the Indianapolis Colts have reached the RDFL Bowl. How does it feel?It feels great!

19

Martin started something really great here in Indianapolis and I’m happy I was able to build on his success and lead this team to the big game. Even though I haven’t put my mark on this team yet, it doesn’t take away from the excitement of getting to play for the league championship. When I came into this league I was named GM of the Chicago Bears. I never got to see my hard work pay off with that squad and while part of me will always be a Bear, I can’t help but be excited for this opportunity and the chance to bring a championship to the great fans in Indy.

Q: You assumed the running of the team part way through the season after previous owner MartinD stood down. How difficult was it to keep the ship on an even keel and following the change of ownership, has the team’s success this season surpassed your expectations?Like I stated before, Martin did a great job of building this team for the chance they are getting on Sunday. It has been my job to get the best out of these guys and teach them to mould to my system. For the most part they have done a fantastic job. The players didn’t really seem to dwell on Martin’s resignation. They gave me 100%

20

from my 1st day on the job.

Q: I’m sure some of the other owners are interested, why ‘Attyla’?It is a mafia thing. I’ve always been fascinated by the mafia. Right before I joined the RDFL, I had read some information on the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago. To make a long story short, one of the central figures from that day was found dead a few months later in a pond just about 40 miles from where I live. One of the guys suspected of killing him had the last name of Attyla and so I thought it was a good forum/mafia name to use.

Q: Coming off the back of that impressive demolition of the Texans, how have you managed to ensure your players have kept their feet on the ground for Sunday? Our coaches have gone over our Week 16 win against Seattle game film with all the players every night for the last week. I want them to know all the positives and negatives from that game. We are the only team to defeat them this year, so we have to know something that no one else knew, right? The main thing for our players to remember is that they are one of the two best teams in the league this year and that 2nd place is

21

always the 1st loser.

Q: Which two players, one from the offense and one defense, have contributed the most to getting the Colts back to the Championship game and why?On offense that is an easy question to answer, RB Bart Wayne. Wayne was our 3rd round pick this last season and has shown he could have easily went late 1st or early 2nd round. The addition of Wayne added a whole another dimension to this team and forced defenses to respect our running game as well as the passing game. If someone had told me at the start of the season that Bart would rush for over 1,300 yards and 6 touchdowns, I would have told them they were crazy.

Defense seems a little bit harder to pinpoint the one guy that puts that unit over the top. We have a couple great defensive linemen, three great linebackers and a pretty good secondary. Rookie safety Brant Kirkland deserves at least a mention. We see big things from him in the future. But probably our key contributor on defense is Phillip Wright.

22

He is a tackling machine up the middle. Whatever Alfred [Hotchkiss] doesn’t get to, Wright does. He lead the team with 117 tackles and 39 assists, finished 5th in the league in tackles and helping anchor a unit that gave up just 97.6 yards per game on the ground.

Q: The AC South is a notoriously difficult division to win and divisional rivals always play hard but which opponent across the whole season has given the Colts the most problems?I would have to go with Houston. Those guys have a great young core and it will only be a season or two before they seriously challenge us for the division title. Both regular season games this year were tight, with the two teams splitting the series. What transpired last week in the AFC Championship game was more of a fluke. The Texans are a much better team than they showed.

Q: Give me two other RDFL teams that have impressed you this season and can you explain why?Houston for the reasons previously stated and the other would have to be Seattle. The Seahawks have a great GM who seems to always consistently be in the running no matter the personnel on his team.

23

It would seem to me that no one is in the same class as the Seahawks. They are in a league of their own and usually dominate no matter they opponent. Frankly, they scare the $#@! out of me.

Q: Looking ahead, what roster priorities do you have going into the close season and can Indy make it three division titles in a row next year? Not sure what the offseason will bring for this team. We should be in pretty good shape cap wise and have ten picks in next year’s draft. We need to focus on drafting the best players possible and maybe adding a few key components that will make us better. We would like to add upgrades at defensive end for sure. Free agent pickup Martin Wynn has performed well this season but is more of a backup type guy. Adding a solid pass rushing DE I believe could really help Randy Bailey realize the potential that he has yet to display.

Q: Which one player, from elsewhere in the league, would you dearly love to have wearing a Colts uniform and why? This might come as a shock, given the play this season of Bart Wayne, but the one guy I

24

would have to be reunited with is RB Mike Newman. Newman is the real deal and a guy I drafted while in Chicago. He would give us another dimension that not even Wayne could bring to the table.

Q: The Colts are a dome team, do you think that playing in the open and on grass here in Miami might present the Seahawks with an edge? Do you feel the weather conditions will influence the game at all?I don’t think Seattle needs any more of an edge than they already have. I don’t believe playing outdoors will affect our performance at all. The weather is going to be clear and sunny which bodes well for our running game. Hopefully turnovers don’t play a big role in this game (at least us doing the turning over!) and weather should not have a significant impact on that facet of the game.

Q: Seattle have enjoyed another awesome season and Vegas has installed them as favorites. Realistically, can the Colts upset the odds and come away as World Champions?Only one team defeated the mighty Seahawks this season and that one team was us.

25

We did it once, we can do it again…..right?---------------

Hi there, roving correspondant Hank Johnstone reporting from Colts HQ just days before their date with destiny against the Seahawks on Sunday.

First up I chatted with rookie sensation J.B Willis, a flying wide receiver out of West Virginia taken 14th in the first round of this years draft. J.B was actually the 5th wideout selected from a fantastic receiving class of 2013.Straight away I sensed J.B would be a tough interviewee.

I started off asking him what J.B stands

26

for ,but he refused to say, he opened up more as I bought another round of beers and told me of his tough upbringing. He was one of six kids with Dad having three jobs and Mom two (just don’t ask what!) to make ends meet.

He was a track star at collage and a very good Centre Fielder to boot. He relaxes by playing the flute and his ambition is to go to South Africa to meet Nelson Mandella.J.B is in a long term relationship with his high school sweetheart Kimberley, with whom he has two children. J.R and J.T "help him stay grounded" and I sense he’s a young man in a rush in real life as well as in the RDFL. Watch this kid he’s gonna be a star.

27

J.B Willis shows his strength week 13 against the Ravens..

Nick Lynn, the Colts` LDT, is a big man with red hair and a red beard to match. He’s had a slow rise to prominence, being drafted by the Browns before being released and then suffering the indignation of being cut by his next team, the Broncos after just one year as a back up.Picked up by the Colts shortly after, his career took off at last and he’s been a mainstay on their D-Line for the past five years or so.

28

Nick Lynn during a Colts practise session.

When you meet him, he greets you with a crushing handshake and a big grin, and a cheerful "howdy" that puts you at ease from the get go.He has strong forthright views on everything from politics to Michael Jackson’s death.I can tell he’s a big character in the locker room and a popular guy amongst his team mates.

Nick is a big fan of country and western music and has actually formed a band with fellow lineman Rich Linkletter, - the ‘Cactus Colts’. He says his favourite song is ‘She’s got the Gold Mine – and I’ve got the Shaft’!

29

Married to Bett, they have three kids (all big lads) with maybe room for a few more he winks to me. He`d love to end his career as a Colt, and having tasted defeat in the playoffs the last two years, he would love to win "The Big Baby" on Sunday.

Having spoken with these two Colts at the opposite end of their careers, I sensed a burning ambition and steely determination. With players like these guys on the roster, I would not be at all surprised to see the Colts triumph on Sunday.

30

The 12th Man

31

Every RDFL franchise has it’s diehard fans who travel the country for road games, turnout in all weather and always seem to receive those tacky merchandising items at Christmas time.

However, despite this, there are only a handful of teams are able to make the proud boast that collectively, their fans are some of the staunchest fans watching football.

Think of hardnosed fans and teams like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago and Green Bay come to mind.

But one team seems to have developed a special bond between fans and the organisation which has taken support on to a whole new level.

The Seattle Seahawks have positively encouraged, nurtured and yes -

32

marketed the legend of the 12th man amongst the Seahawk nation.

The number 12 jersey has been officially retired in honour of the fans, many of whom wear that number proudly on their replica jerseys. The 12th man flag flies from the roof at Qwest Field and has been seen across the city.

They’re a shrewd bunch in the Seahawks front office, and it’s no surprise to see that the Seahawks had the second most sold out games in 2013.

Scientific types with their decibel monitors have said officially that Seahawks home games are some of the loudest in the league and every offsides

33

penalty is seen as audience participation at Qwest field!

Will the 12th man be a factor in the RDFL Bowl? Well, which team had the most sell outs in the league? Here’s a clue – they’ll be wearing white on Sunday…..

-----------------------------

Indianapolis Colts and the Temple of Doom.

34

The New home of the Colts - Lucas Oil Stadium.

Indianapolis are a team on the up.The franchise has just won it’s second straight AFC South title and this season they have progressed to the big game – RDFL Bowl IX.This team are young (Three rookies will start in the Bowl game) and have a new owner full of ambition and excitement at running his very own RDFL franchise.

But the good news doesn’t stop there folks, the Colts organisation have just revealed their new state of the art stadium for the upcoming season. The brand spanking new Lucas Oil Stadium was built at a cost of $720m and boy did the Colts get some bang for their buck!

The stadium has 137 executive suites, two huge Daktronics high definition scoreboards and can host basketball as well as football games. The stadium’s most impressive features have to be the retractable roof and

35

moveable window wall which allow games to be played in dome or open air conditions. It’s easy to see why this 63,000 capacity stadium has been shortlisted to host future RDFL Bowl games and with the Colts being the only 100percent sell out franchise in the RDFL, Indy fans will be hoping the stadium will fast become a ‘Temple of Doom’ for opposing teams.

36

Hawkeye – Seahawks Player Focus

When you think Seahawks, there is one player that springs to mind first and foremost: QB Justin Vance. The big number 4 provokes emotions at both ends of the scale. Fans either love him or loath him.

Justin Vance

The number 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft is used to eliciting feelings of jealousy from others. He has it all: good looks, money, sporting prowess and now after announcing his engagement to US woman’s soccer star Mia Hamm, he has the beautiful woman on his arm as well.

There will always be people who can’t see past these aspects of Vance’s life but perhaps the envy he attracts helps to explain his cold and almost arrogant public image.

Vance attracts criticism for his serious countenance , his offhand way of dealing with interviewers and even his cold shouldering of autograph hunters.Fans of the other 31 pro teams love to pass judgement on Justin ‘Iceman’ Vance and see his nickname as a portraying a flaw in the QB’s character.

However, ask a member of the 12th man why they love Vance and they will give you a different slant.

37

The Seahawks faithful see ‘Iceman’ as a compliment to Vance’s efficiency, composure and deadly ability to go for the throat. They love the way he can control his emotions and focus on winning without allowing anything else to impair his judgement.Vance has an almost robotic ability to laser pass after pass into the numbers and team mates even talk of his trance like state on game day.

A host of individual honors are testament to Vance’s skills as a pro quarterback and this Sunday’s game will no doubt see him add to those.Whether he will allow himself a smile should the Seahawks emerge victorious, maybe we will never know. One thing is for sure, the Colts know the ‘Iceman’ cometh.

Now we go to the other side of the ball and focus on a defensive monster.I meet DE Bennie Banks for lunch at a downtown steak house to try to get an insight into just what makes him such an influential player.

First thing I notice is the guy is a monster standing over 6"5ft and weighing nearly 300lbs, with a neck that is as wide as his head.Sporting a trim goatee he fixes me with those steely eyes that seem to bore right into a man. He is certainly an intimidating figure and he turns heads as we sit down to lunch (for the record: Banks orders double 20oz rib eyes with the full works).

38

Bennie Banks

I try hard to get into the guy’s mindset but he is not in a real talkative mood just grunting yes or no answers to my questions. In fact the complete opposite of his game day persona where we know he is in charge in the locker room barking orders, slamming locker doors, and generally being a force of nature in the Seahawks inner sanctum.

Slowly Banks opens up to me as we discuss his career since being drafted at 1.5 by the ‘Hawks back in 2011.He already has an RDFL Bowl ring at the grand old age of 26, and with time on his side I wouldn’t bet against him getting another couple before he hangs up his cleats - starting Sunday.Throw in All-Pro honors and a Defensive Player of the Year award and there is much to discuss despite his career having registered just it’s third season.

On the field the guy is simply a stud. In just his second year in the league he amassed an amazing 17 sacks and there is no doubt that Banks is destined for the Hall of Fame. There is perhaps no other defender that can stamp his authority on a game at the flick of a switch with his very presence on the field of battle sometimes being enough to defeat the enemy.Banks chuckles deeply as he recalls that infamous occasion in 2012 when he got his fourth sack on the then Buccaneers QB Marc Bulger.Banks had intimidated the Buccs playcaller so much so that in the fourth quarter, Bennie only had to run growling

39

at the passer to see him simply sit down on his butt and wait for the beast to feast.“The easiest sack of my career so far” he booms “and possibly I was a contributing factor to Bulger being traded out of town” he says with a glint in his eye.

We finish our meal and I’m not sure whether Banks is toying with me but he stands up to his full height and simply thunders down at me “Your tab” before striding out to his waiting limo.Thank heavens for expense accounts!

Championship Quick Facts

Indianapolis are aiming to become the seventh team to win the trophy.

Just 10 different teams have appeared in a Championship game.

The NFC have won the trophy 5 times, the AFC 3 times.

No Bowl team has ever failed to score at least 1 TD.

RDFL Bowl IX is the first Championship where both teams have previously appeared in the big game.

Of the eight Bowls played so far, only twice have the team with the most regular season wins actually won

the Championship.(Kansas City 12-4 in 2010 and Seattle 14-2 in 2011)

41

RDFL Bowl I saw the NFC team wear their home colors and the conferences have alternated each year

since.Only once have the ‘home’ team failed to win the

Championship (Denver in 2006).Seattle are the ‘home’ team this year.

Enjoy the Game Folks!
