LA JOLLA, 18 Nov—Previous influenza infectionsmay provide at least some level of immunity to theH1N1 flu, US researchers found.

“The question we asked was, “Is the swine flu morelike the seasonal flu or like a totally new strain of in-fluenza where there would be no immunity?,”Alessandro Sette, director of the La Jolla Institute’sCenter for Infectious Disease in California, said in astatement.

“What we have found is that the swine flu has simi-larities to the seasonal flu, which appear to providesome level of pre-existing immunity.

This suggests that it could make the disease lesssevere in the general population than originally feared.”

The researchers used the Immune Epitope Data-base — a worldwide research tool developed andhosted by the La Jolla Institute — to conduct theirstudy.

Initially, the research team conducted the study us-ing computer modeling and later blood samples ofadults representative of the normal population.

“We found that the immune system’s T cells — in-fection-fighting white blood cells in the body’s im-mune system — can recognize a significant percent ofthe markers in swine (H1N1) flu,” Sette said.

“Nobody knows what level of immunity is suffi-cient for protection.

We do know that a T cell response is not enough toprevent being infected by the virus.”—Internet

RIO DE JANEIRO, 18Nov—Despite the de-crease in Brazil’s socialinequality indicators inthe past few years, recentstudies have shown thatthe poverty level of thecountry’s children andadolescents remains high.

According to Summaryof Social Indicators (SIS)released recently by theBrazilian Institute of Geo-graphy and Statistics(IBGE), some 26.2 per-cent of the Brazilian chil-dren lived in families withhousehold per capital in-come equal to half a mini-mum wage in 2008, downfrom 32.4 percent in 1998.

In 2008, Brazil’s mini-mum wage was 415 reais(244 US dollars). Thisyear, it increased to 465

reais (273 US dollars). The IBGE attributed the

improvement to the gov-ernment’s successful pro-grammes implemented inthe past years and thestabilization of the coun-try’s economy.

In the poorer northeast-ern region, 66.7 percent ofthe children, teenagersand youngsters still livedin poverty, while in thericher and more develop-ed southern region, thefigure fell to 28.7 percent, the report said.

The study highlightedthat household incomehelped determine schoolattendance rate, which in-creased as the level offamilies’ income did.

For children of four tosix years old, the rate of

school attendance was77.1 percent for familiesliving with a per capitalincome of half a mini-mum wage and the figurejumped to 98.8 percent forthose with a per capita in-come of three times of aminimum wage, accord-ing to the report.

The school attendancerate of teenagers aged 15to 17 in the poorest 20 per-cent families was 78.4percent and for teenagersin the richest 20 percentfamilies, the figure was93.7 percent. —Xinhua

US Army suicides set to hit new high in 2009WASHINGTON, 18 Nov—Suicides in the US Army will hit a new high this year, a top

general said on Tuesday in a disclosure likely to increase concerns about stress on USforces ahead of an expected buildup in Afghanistan. The findings, released as PresidentBarack Obama inches toward a decision to send up to 40,000 additional troops toAfghanistan, show the number of active-duty suicides so far in 2009 has already matchedlast year’s record of 140 deaths.

“We are almost certainly going to end the year higher than last year,” General PeterChiarelli, the Army’s vice Chief of Staff, told a Pentagon briefing. “This is horrible, andI do not want to downplay the significance of these numbers in any way.” Another 71soldiers committed suicide after being taken off active duty in 2009 — nearly 25 percentmore than the end-year total for 2008. Some had returned home only weeks before takingtheir own lives.

The figures applied only to the US Army. Data from other branches of the armedservices was not immediately available.

In 2008, there were 268 active-duty suicides across the US armed forces, most in theArmy. The military’s suicide rate among active-duty soldiers was about 20 per 100,000,nearly double the national US rate of 11.1 suicides per 100,000 people, as reported by theUS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.—MNA/Reuters

Iran to add 14 mln litresof gasoline to daily outputTEHERAN, 18 Nov—Iran’s oil minister said on Tues-

day that his country will add 14 million litres of gaso-line to its daily output, the official IRNA news agencyreported.

Masoud Mirkazemi said the production of gasolinein Iran’s three petrochemical plants would decreasethe amount of imported gasoline by 14 million litresper day, the report said.

At a ceremony, Mirkazemi announced the initia-tion of the operational phase of the project aimed atraising gasoline output in the three petrochemicalplants of Imam Khomeini Port, Bu-Alisina andBorzuyeh, all situated in southern Iran.

“The project will discourage the enemies from ef-forts to limit Iran’s access to gasoline in the market,”he said.

He added that although the import of gasoline hasbeen misused as a lever to put pressure on the Iranianpeople, there are various companies who are ready toextend their supply agreements with Iran.

Western countries have threatened to impose gaso-line sanctions on Iran over its defiance to comply withthe UN resolutions to halt its disputed nuclear activi-ties. However, Iran’s governor of the Organization ofthe Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)Mohammad-Ali Khatibi downplayed the threat.

“The rainy season has ended in most countries ofthe world and gasoline consumption will resultantlyslide to the minimum level. Thus, a large number ofgasoline suppliers are vying hard with each other in abid to sell their gasoline to Iran,” the semi-officialFars news agency quoted Khatibi as saying on 26 Oct.

Gene may explain whychimps can’t speak

LOS ANGELES, 18 Nov—US researchers say they mayhave discovered why humans, who are genetically re-lated to chimps, developed language and speech abili-ties while chimps did not.

A UCLA-Emory University team of scientists saysit suspects part of the answer lies in a gene calledFOXP2 that, when mutated, can disrupt speech andlanguage in humans. The researchers say they’ve foundmajor differences between how the human and chimpversions of FOXP2 work, perhaps explaining why lan-guage is unique to humans.

The scientists said their findings provide insight intothe evolution of the human brain and may point topossible drug targets for human disorders character-ized by speech disruption, such as autism and schizo-phrenia.

“Earlier research suggests the amino-acid composi-tion of human FOXP2 changed rapidly around thesame time that language emerged in modern humans,”said Dr Daniel Geschwind of UCLA. “Ours is thefirst study to examine the effect of these amino-acidsubstitutions in FOXP2 in human cells.

Early oceans more temperate than thoughtSTANFORD, 18 Nov— US scientists say the scalding-hot sea that many of us were

taught covered the early Earth might, in fact, never have existed.Stanford University researchers who analyzed isotope ratios in 3.4 billion-year-

old ocean floor rocks say their findings suggest the early ocean was much moretemperate and spread across the globe much sooner in Earth’s history than has beengenerally theorized. Professor Page Chamberlain, who led the study, said thefindings also mean the chemical composition of the ancient ocean was significantlydifferent from today’s ocean, which in turn might change interpretations of howthe early atmosphere evolved.“By looking at both oxygen and hydrogen in theseancient rocks we were able to put some constraints on how different the ancientocean composition may have been from today, and then use that composition totry to determine how hot the ancient ocean was,” said researcher Michael Hren, thelead author of the study.—Internet

Magnitude Quake rattlesCanada’s west coast

VANCOUVER (British Columbia), 18 Nov — A 6.6magnitude earthquake rattled residents on the westcoast of Canada on Tuesday, but did not cause damageor trigger a tsunami, US and Canadian officials said.

The underwater quake was centered 260 kilometres(162 miles) southwest of Prince Rupert, British Columbiaat a depath of 10 kilometres (6.2 Miles), off thesouthern tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands, the USGeological Survery said.

It was quickly followed by a 5.7 magnitudeaftershock. “It was felt over a very broad area,” saidJohn Cassidy, a senior researcher at the PacificGeoscience Centre in Sidney, British Columbia,Canada’s main earthquake research center on thePacific Coast.

Earthquakes are common in the area where thePacific and North American tectonic plates meet, andthe temblor appears to have been the result of the twoplates sliding against each other, geologists said.
