S PRING G ALA ANNUAL RD Mark your calendars now for the WVU Cancer Institute 33rd Annual Spring Gala to be held April 27-29, 2018, at The Greenbrier – America’s Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Please join this year’s Gala Co-Chairs Betty Puskar and Barbara Alexander McKinney, Gala Honorary Chairs WVU President E. Gordon Gee and Laurie Erickson, along with hundreds of others at this weekend-long signature event that celebrates the Cancer Institute’s progressive efforts to improve the health of West Virginians through world-class cancer care. The Cancer Institute announced a massive expansion that will double both physical space and clinical providers to meet the growing demand for cancer services in West Virginia. Additionally, the Institute’s growing number of regional cancer centers ensures that many patients are able to receive most of their care closer to home. The WVU Cancer Institute is at the forefront of research, education and patient care, made possible by the generosity of loyal friends and supporters, who also recognize that cancer is a serious health problem in our state: • West Virginia has the third highest cancer mortality rate in the nation. • Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in West Virginia. • Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related death in West Virginia. • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related death in West Virginia women. • Risk factors, such as #1 in tobacco use and #1 in obesity make cancer difficult to manage. • Community, state and regional leaders • Representatives from business, government, and public, private and nonprofit organizations • Friends and supporters of the WVU Cancer Institute
