Precision Manufacturing Technology

Get there.

PMT students train for a hands-on career in a machine shop using manual lathes, mills and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines which drill, cut, and shape, metal or other materials to make precision parts. PMT students will also gain computer skills and learn Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software to draw parts and Computer Aided Machining (CAM) software to control the machine and toolpath to create the part. Craftsmanship, accuracy, and attention to detail are a must for this career.

Median Stage Wage: Median stage wage for a CNC machine operator is $17.98/hour. More wage information can be found at: http://www.iseek.org/jobs/salaryInfo?occ=514011

Employment Outlook: The employment outlook for this field is on the rise at 29.7% for Minnesota.

Common Knowledge and Interests: Potential students should be mechanically inclined and have an interest in the design and manufacture of machines and tools. Areas of knowledge include arithmetic, geometry, reading rulers and basic measurement tools.

Major Employers: Machine shops and manufactures of motor vehicle or agricultural parts, metalworking machinery, plastic products, or industrial furniture.

The Women’s Economic Security Act (WESA) Grant is available for a limited time to qualifying women interested in pursuing careers in welding, precision manufacturing technology (PMT), computer aided drafting (CAD), and other qualifying fields.
