ABOUT THE PROGRAMA Building Utilities Mechanic is trained in the areas of welding, boiler operation, electricity, plumbing, residential and commercial refrigeration, air conditioning, pneumatics, heating and cooling controls, and computerized energy management systems. A Building Utilities Mechanic is responsible for operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment found in commercial buildings.

Expect ExcellenceAfter initial training, students may take the state examination for a special steam engineer’s license. After completion of the second year, students who qualify may take the state examination for second class “A” steam engineer’s license and/or refrigeration certification.

As Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4...The Building Utilities Mechanic major is four semesters in length. Students can start the program in either fall or spring semesters. Upon completion of the second semester, students are

placed with a co-op training sponsor to gain hands-on work experience for two days a week throughout the third and fourth semesters.

Expect opportunityGraduates of the Building Utilities Mechanic major start in various maintenance areas including power plants, hotels, hospitals, education, waste to energy, entertainment, manufacturing, processing and industrial facilities. Graduates are employed as service technicians in the heating/ventilation/air conditioning(H.V.A.C.) field and building trades. Several graduates are self-employed in the H.V.A.C. and refrigeration field.

In Minnesota, about 17,776 building maintenance workers are employed in what is considered a large occupation. Major employers include: property management firms; federal, state and local government agencies; colleges, universities and schools and hospitals.

Nationally, employment projections are 10.1 percent through 2016. In the state of Minnesota, employment projections are 9.7 percent through 2016.
