Most Spares optimization processes focus on reducing
inventory based on usage frequency as opposed to
determining the appropriate spares requirements based
on business value. RCS Pro focuses on identifying the
correct stockholding policy that supports the core
business value of the asset. Spares exist to prevent the
consequences of stockouts. RCS Pro explores the
conditions that lead to stockouts and determines the
required spares along with proactive maintenance
strategies to reduce spares requirements. The proactive
stockholding policies have the ability to prevent the initial
need for the spare by preventing unanticipated stockouts.
A Be s t P ra c t i ce
RCS Pro is based on the fundamental asset
management principles of Reliability Centered
Maintenance, which is a recognized best practice
process. It is a facilitated process with input from
people closest to the assets. RCS Pro’s robust
decision diagram enables the decisions for spares
reduction and minimum spares requirements to be
made by the users and maintainers of the assets as
opposed to material management personnel. This
best practice criterion ensures defensibility and buy
in, resulting in sustainable inventory reductions and
improved asset performance.

RCS Pro is designed to perform inventory reviews,
validate new spares being requested for inventory and
determine spares requirements for new assets.
Historically, when used as an inventory review tool,
reductions in the 40 to 70% range can be expected for
expensive slow moving spares. As a process to
validate new inventory requests, spares that are kept
are those that show a positive value to the business.
When used to determine the spares requirements of
new assets, only the validated minimum spares are
kept.
De fe n s i b l e a n d Ad a p ta b le
RCS Pro determines the minimum spares
requirements based on the core business in its current
operating context. When the business operating
context changes, the inventory requirements will
change accordingly and will always be defensible.
Co re Bu s i n e ss Va l u e
RCS Pro enables companies to understand the core
business value of the spares, as opposed to just
knowing the cost of inventory.
