    JOHN HOLT

On the week leading up to friday february2th Cardiff was gripped by John Holt fever.

The excitement at the Radio Cardiff studio

was mirrored by the listeners as we

approached our first sellout Radio Cardiff

    Event.

Hundreds of people were anxiously awaiting

he arrival of the reggae legend, who last

visited our city over thirty years ago. With an

amazing support act booked, the extremely

alented Sandra Cross, the night promised

    o be historic.

At 5pm on the night on the concert the last

ickets available were auctioned LIVE on

Tubbs & Wibbs show Pull up to the Bumper.

he first pair went for a staggering 200 with

he next pair going for an equalling

mpressive 100, with all proceeds going to

    he Unicef Haiti Fund.

By 7.30pm people were lining the street,

eagerly awaiting the Students Union doors

o open and I must say the atmosphere was

antastic. I managed to speak to a few

people that were patiently waiting in the

    cold.

Its a life time achievement for Radio Cardiff

o bring an artist of this level to us said

Richard Ford who was attending the gig with

    his wife.

Tina Jefferson, an RC member was also fullof praise Im looking forward to John Holt

obviously but Im really looking forward to

Sandra Cross. She always gets me in the

    mood.

As Sandra Cross took the stage the already electric atmosphere

seems to step up a notch, with the tremendous crowd all raising their

hands in the air and swaying in unison. They seemed to throughly

enjoy Sandras very unique style and powerful voice, mixed with her

strong stage presence, She delivered an astonishing start to theevening.

I was stood at the side of the stage and Sandra was very excited to

chat with me after her performance.

That was beautiful, I love coming to Cardiff. I always have such a

great response from the people here, everyones always seems to be

out to have the time of lives Said Sandra with a smile Im often in

this city and I listen to Radio Cardiff when im here, im thankful ive

had the opportunity to meet such beautiful people.

After a short intermission the time had finally arrived and to a thunder

of applause John Holt took to the stage.

Belting out hit after hit he looked to be enjoying himself just as much

as the hundreds of fans that were mimicking every word he sang right

    back to him.

At one point I glanced to my right and saw a couple in their 70s

standing against the barrier, I immediately walked to them and

offered a place at the side of the stage with RC staff. The gentleman

very kindly refused my offer as he had apparently promised his wife

for over 40 years that he would one day get her front row at a John

    Holt concert.

The highlight of the evening and im pretty sure the audience will

agree with me, was as the man himself sang the infamous lyrics Take

the ribbon from your hair, shake it loose and let it fall.

At this moment I turned to see my RC family, every one of them had

taken to their feet. Its safe to say that we enjoyed the night just as

much as you did, maybe even a little bit more.

Cardiff based band Futuretownwere formed in early 2007

after drummer Mark Hennandecided to put down his sticksand try his hand at guitar. Theband quickly came togetherwith the arrival of TopherRead, Luke Thomas,DannyKilbride and Glyn Bateman.

The band rapidly built up a

    very respectable following,

regulars at Buffalo Bar and Bar Fly

    they have supported some well

    established acts. Most memorably

Sandi Thom at The Point where

    they electrified the crowd, ending

the night with a concert hall full of

fans under their finely tuned belts.

    Mark Hennan and Topher Read

can be credited for writing their

    stunning songs. With Mark taking

the lead on vocals, he also plays

guitar and is showing promise to

    be a world class performer.

Thopher is lead guitarist of theband with Luke Thomas on

    Rhythm Guitar, Danny Kilbride on

    Bass and Glyn Bateman on

    Drums.

Futuretown have signed athree year publishing deal with

Conextion Music, a major player in

    music media rights administration.

They also publish songs for Fat

Boy Slim, The Prodigy, The Fugees

    and Tom Jones. They operate

    from London, Hong Kong,

    Nashville and New York.

    The boys appeared on Radio

Cardiffs Donna Z show in May

2009 and have since played a live

acoustic set on BBC Radio Wales.

    Going from strength to

strength they are now looking into

booking gigs out side of Wales tobuild on their fan base.

    When listening to Futuretown

their are two tracks that stand-out

for me, the up-tempo track Word

Gets Out has a fantastic musical

    arrangement , with Topher shining

    on lead guitar. New Beginnings

my personal favourite is a very

    touchingly written, beautiful vocal

track that i believe Mark wroteafter the birth of his first child.

We will be catching up with the

boys in April live on air at Radio

Cardiff, if you have any questions

    for them please email us

    GELA B.

Let the music play!Gela Best has been a presenter at Radio Cardiff since October 2008,

bringing your the best in soul, funk, old skool and RnB every friday.

Gela always showed a flair from performing, studying media and

performing arts in early adulthood, she eventually started singing

    professionally in 2001.

Many of you will remember her energetic performances at theTapas

Bar Cardiff Bay, where she would delight the audience every sunday

with a fantastic mixture of Disco, Soul and RnB classics.

Gelas also performed as a back-up singer for a very well knownCardiff artist Noel Sullivan at The Point. She impressed the team so

much in rehearsal that she was also able to perform songs, that she

written and arranged herself, as a support act.

Always ambitious Gela has recently started her own catering company

lthough I am assured that her first love is singing, her most

mportant role is being a mother to her 10yr old daughter Saffron.

We caught up with Gela to ask her a few questions.

What does being a regular at Radio Cardiff bring to you?

The reason i enjoy being part of the Radio Cardiff team is fundamentally my

love of music. Community radio is such an amazing opportunity for people to

have their voices heard, Ive also been lucky enough to form some really

good friendships and work with some very gifted people.

Describe your show for those that might not have tuned in?

My show is called Let The Music Play and that is exactly what i intend to do.

My aim is to make bring the excitement of a friday night to the office or

where ever you are. Mid-day friday is always hard for everyone as you are

preparing for the weekend, trying to get all the mundane tasks of the week

to a halt. I try to make the day move along a little faster with up-beat tracks

to get you in mood for the weekend. How do your show progressing in 2010?

I have some very exciting plans for the coming year, its all about listener

participation for me. Ive been lucky enough to be able to work with one of

my oldest friends we share the same slot a day apart so we are currently

looking for ways to bring our shows together. Hopefully within the next

month we will be running competitions starting on Thursday with the results

on Friday, do not be surprised if they involve running around cardiff looking

for clues then coming into the studio and doing something a bit silly. After all

thats what its about, having fun.

Hot tips for 2010?Paloma Faith, her star is shinning very brightly at the moment. I love anyone

that has the gumption to be different in the media industry, teamed with her

amazing voice I am positive she is going to be the one to watch in 2010.

You can email [email protected] for more information on Gela B!

    COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS

From Cardiff to CoventryKervin Julien by Rachel Price

i was to ask you if you knew a man named Kervin

ulien many of you would answer no, yet if i asked you

you knew a man named Kermit then im positiveour response would be very different.

Way back when Radio Cardiff was founded, under the

ame Bay FM, Mr Julien was one of the founding

members. Along with John Lenney and Bobby Smooth

hey created a place where people of all ages could

ome together, through their love of music. They gave

uidance and advice to young people, many of them

ithout noticing, whilst teaching them the tools they

eeded to perform well in a place of buisness. I myself

d work experience at Bay FM and I now have thepportunity to work along side some of the original Bay

M members at Radio Cardiff, John, Bobby, Ian Gulley

nd Lyden Tubbs Cummerbatch, but unfortunately not

    ervin.

ervin left Cardiff four years ago, he lost himself as he

uts it and moved to Coventry with hopes of a better

uture. Since moving to Coventry he has had a new

ase on life. Kervin is now married to a lovely lady and

hey have a beautiful young daughter. Most importantly

e has devoted his life to helping people less fortunate

han himself, even leaving his job so that he could

evote more time to the people in his community that

eeded his help. Kervin has managed to convince

crupulous companies like Sainsburys to donate food to

he hungry and landlords to donate their empty

    roperties to the homeless.

ervin has devoted so much time and effort to helping

eople in his community that on February 5th 2010

oventry Council bestowed upon him their Pride of

oventry award and their Life Time Achievementward.

asked Kervin what his motivation was:

I come from a very troubled background, and onlybecause of the kindness of others, can I now stand in the

gap, and support people who are finding life difficult. My

passion is for the Homeless, Drug Addicted, Alcoholic andvulnerable men and women, young boys and girls, whom

society would like to forget. I don't make excuses for their

behaviour, we and they both know it's wrong, but

condemning them, and leaving them to rot, is not the

answer. There are many things to do, and I can't do them

all, but here are just some of the ways that we try to help.

Firstly, they need love, they need to know love, so every

Sunday for the past year and a half, we have met them on

the streets of Coventry, namely, The Transport Museum and

The Salvation Army Hostel in Lincoln Street, and with the

food and flasks of coffee and soup, we feed them, talk to

them, buy them sleeping bags, coats, jackets, socks, thelist goes on. We direct them to support agencies, housing

authorities, drive them to hospitals or the walk-in centre.

We pick them up and take them to church, drop them back

into town, listen to their heartfelt stories, and offer them

hope. We laugh with them, we cry with them, We get mad

with them, we love them back to an acceptance. We started

off with one guy, we now support over 150 people a

week. They have got to believe they are worth it.There is somuch more that I can say. But why do I do it? Because up

until four years ago I was just like them, I had been an

addict for 36 years. My life was upside down. I lost

everything I had, my home, my children, my family and so

called friends. I was facing a long term in prison, I had

broken both my ankles, was close to giving up on life. Then

something miraculous happened, I found God.

Kervin we congratulate you in your new life andwhilst you and the community that you live in mayhave found God, Cardiff has lost an angel.

    Man About Town!By Nick Williams.

omeone far brainier (and camper) than me said,When you are tired of London you are tired of life.urely Mr Wilde never had the benefit of samplingll the hostelries that our beautiful city has to offer.f he had been a visitor to Cardiff I would haveaken him out for the weekend and shown him thatardiff on a good night is just as diverse as Theondon, and each night has a different vibe whichnsures you could never be bored with our greatty. If he were alive today I would show him ariday night to remember.

Never let it be said that dont actively support localusinesses. I am very happy to frequent localostelries for a shandy or two. In fact its fair to sayve combined imbibing of a couple of shandies withstroll around town, Ive convinced myself this islmost exercise. For my evening with Mr Wilde Iecide to combine a little aerobic exercise with aew cheeky shandies. We start at one of my favourite out of town barshe Juno Lounge in Wellfield Road. Quiet enough toalk about the work, about life and about love, quietnough in fact to take an illegal love and not geteen or caught by your legal love. After ordering 5apas dishes whilst playing table Jenga andntroducing him to an ambient funky house vibe weecide to venture on our way and go more arty.itting City Road we stop off for a can of Red Stripe

n Milgis.introduce Mr Wilde to the eclectic mix of art, weiscuss whether the photography on show is art orust life. He protests that everything is art, life isrt. Im not sure he is correct, I argue that I couldake all those pictures on my Nokia Mobile, he calls

me a, reprehensible philistine I havent a Scoobyoo what he is on about, I start to think that Mr

Wilde cant hold his drink as he is getting abusive. Iecide he obviously needs some fresh air so weecide to go closer into town.

We look at the people going into Buffalo Bar and decidethat as both of us are the right side of 30, tonightKindergarten Club isnt for us.We hit Churchill Way and the day glow orange dcor ofWOW calls to us. The most amazing smell of food hits ournostrils, people are scattered around tables eating foodthat it states are freshly prepared in the Deli next door. 4different varieties of homemade Scotch Eggs are on offeralong with roast dinners and huge steak and ale pies. Asign above the bar states Sunday Dinners available allday Sunday, I make a mental note that this should bemy new place on Sundays. Up on stage I see Caroline OConnor and inform my visitor that she is CharlotteChurchs aunt. The cultural phenomenon that is MsChurch doesnt seem to impress him.A heady throng of diverse Cardiff come and go. Seventy

year-old couples attracted by the price of drinks, men infrocks who should know better and a hen party add tothe circus cacophony. The bar turns into a merry goround and on the last strains of someone screeching MyWay on the Karaoke I look up and try and focus on theclock next to the stack of cider bottles.1.30AM comes into focus.I slur Charlestons to my guest, he doesnt understand

and thinks we are visiting the aforementioned CharlotteChurch, (Although we could as she is known to hold courtin the venue).I look down chippy alley and see ravenous groups

stuffing chicken curry and chips into there droolingmouths. Outside the restaurant I look up the stairs andmake references to climbing Kilimanjaro just to get intothe restaurant.A waiter comes over with more jewellery than QVC on a

gem day special, crispy cauliflower comes to thetable

Next issue I take Jamie Oliver for some culinaryhighlights around the city.......

Each issue Man About Town imagines what it will be like taking a celebrity living or dead around

    Whats Hot In Cardiff.......

GALA CASINOLike myself many of you would associate the word casino

with losing a lot of money and being intimidated by the

bright lights and high stakes. Not at this casino.

Upon my arrival I was impressed and I must admit slightly

shocked by how relaxed the atmosphere was, I almost

nstantly forgot where I was felt very at ease as I made

my way through the main room. The bar area is very

nicely laid out, with big, soft leather furnishing and a

cocktail list that would hold its weight with any new york

bar. As I ordered my usual, pinot for me and lager for the

husband I was also introduced to 4% Stella. Now this

might sound rather silly to you but im a girl that enjoys aager so this for me was quiet a discovery.

We were escorted around the casino floor by the manager

Paul, then shown to the very comfortable resturant area.

The resturant is made up of very spacious booths with

your own tv , Hostess service and a grill menu to die for.

Along with a very extensive list of starters and

desserts, they have a huge selection of Scottish reared

twenty-one day matured steaks also many other dishes

from Tai Green curry to Sausage and Mash.

I had the chicken and mushroom pie, which came withcarrots, mashed potato and a lovely little gravy boat.

It was delicious, cooked to perfection with a lovely firm

crust and soft base, the mash was creamy and gravy was

perfect. Although I will admit that my husbands Sirloin

steak was odds on the best steak that I have witnessed

served in a resturant in years, which as always made me

want to eat his also. The portions were good and the

service and presentation was at a very high standard.

Prices were also reasonable with my chicken and

mushroom pie costing 7.99 and the huge 11oz sirloin

came in at 14.99, both meals were worth every penny.

I was so comfortable that we decided to stay and have a

    drink in the bar............

Gala Casino, UGC complex, WoodStreet, Cardiff.

Open 24hrs a day with a Valet Menu

available in the day and Grill Menu in

    the evenings.

Each new member is entitled to a tour

of the casino floor, a free gaming

voucher and a drink of their choice.

You have to be a member to enter the

    casino floor.

Resturant booths are also available tohire on Rugby international days,

costing 5 per person this entitles you

to a beverage each and bar snacks.

Hostess service is also included in the

    price.

Red Devil Matt ToweSo whats going on in the Sports world in our very own city centre? Resident sports fanatic and Radio CardiffPresenter Kelly RB decided to find out what this Ice Hockey malarkey was all about and got close and personalwith the Cardiff Devils very own Matt Towe to find out what he really thinks about Cardiff.......

Full Name: Matthew Alexander ToweDOB: 7/1/88Hometown: SheffieldPosition Played: Centre/wing

KRB: So Matt.....How long have you played for theDevils?MT: Ah this'll be my 3rd year.

KRB: Whats your most memorable Ice Hockeygame and why?MT: Probably my first league game with the Devilsbecause it was in Sheffield, my home city, so was goodto be able to play in front of my friends and family as aCardiff player.

KRB: That must've been awesome!!!! So whatattracted you to move to Cardiff, its a long wayfrom home?MT: Well definitely the opportunity to play at the highestevel in Britain. I did a little asking around about the cluband the City too and all I heard was positive things.

KRB: Is there a difference between here and yourhome town?MT: Yeah! I'd say Cardiff is a little more vibrant thanSheffield..... there always seem's to be something goingon with it been a Capital City. Being a home town boy Ido love Sheffield but Cardiff is now a home from homefor me.

KRB: Well thats good!! So you've been here a fewyears... What do you think of the redevelopmentsin Cardiff ...and will it be great to get the new Ice

Rink rather than the temporary one?MT: I think the developments are a good sign for thecity. You've got a lot going on with the new Cardiff City

and Blues stadium then the new St Davids and JohnLewis build, that things an eye opener! It's come alongway since i first moved here! And yeah I think it wouldbe great to get a new rink. I know our team owners arereally pushing for it and it would really help withpromoting Ice Hockey in Wales as well as other IceSports.

KRB: Ok a bit about you for our readers....Whatsyour favourite food?MT: I'm a big fan of Italian and Mexican

KRB:Whats your favourite drink?MT: Corona bottled lager (chuckles).

KRB: Ha ha ha! Of course!! And finally who wouldyou say inspires you the most?

MT: I take a lot of inspiration from my parents they'vealways worked hard to be able to give me and mySister opportunities.

KRB: Well thanks for talking to R'CORDMatt....best of luck with the rest of the season!
