Wireless Networks

• Wireless communication network consists of number of nodes which communicate

with each other over a wireless channel.

• Based on the type of network infrastructure used for communication, wireless

communication networks are categorized into two types:

Infrastructure less 

Infrastructure based

Wireless networks

Infrastructure less network

• It is a collection of mobile or semi mobile nodes with no pre-established

infrastructure forming a temporary network. Mobile or semi mobile nodes form a

multi hop network in order to communicate with each other. In multi hop

environment, multiple intermediate nodes are required to provide communication

 between source and destination nodes.

• Infrastructure less networks are self-creating, self-organizing and self-administrative.

Infrastructure less networks

• Two types of infrastructure less networks are 

Smart Sensor Network (SSN)

Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET).

• Smart Sensor Network consists of number of sensors spread across a geographical

area.Each sensor has wireless communication capability and sufficient intelligence

for signal processing and networking of the data. However, the nodes of sensor

network are always stationary/static.

•   Such network is applied for various applications like military sensor networks,

wireless traffic sensor networks, wireless parking lot sensor networks etc.

Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET)

• MANET consists of MNs equipped with wireless radio. If two such nodes

are in mutual transmission range of each other then they can communicate

directly. However, if we want to forward the data from a source node to

destination node and these nodes are not within the transmission range of

each other, then a route from source to destination node is routed through

intermediate nodes.

Infrastructure based network

•  It is a collection of MNs which communicate with each other

through Access Points or fixed infrastructure.

• An Access Point (AP) acts like a hub or a Base Station (BS)

which provides connection among wireless nodes in a singlehop.

• The term single hop signifies that MN can directly transmit the

 packet to another node. Each AP has a finite range within

which a wireless connection can be maintained between thenodes. However, in order to communicate with a MN beyond

its radio range, AP acts as a router .

• The infrastructure based networks are of following types:

 NEtwork MObility Networks (NEMO)

• It consists of MNs that form a network which changes its Point of

Attachment (PoA).

•  A network can virtually be recognized as a single node with one address

such as a prefix address and some interfaces attached to it.

• The single node that manages mobile network’s movement is called Mobile

Router (MR).

• During mobility, network provides connectivity with Internet through MRand this MR change its PoA instead of the MNs connected to MR.

•  NEtwork MObility (NEMO) is transparent to the mobile node inside the

mobile network.

• e-Wheelchair: for people with disabilities and the elderly

Health monitoring

Remote communication between wheelchair and

third party (hospital, doctor, family)

Increased independence

• e-Bicycle: for sport and tourismSport training: monitoring of the performance /

health condition of the cyclist

Tourism: assist people in visiting cities (e.g.Bicycle rental at

Kamakura) with navigation,historical guidance, etc

Sport competition / rallyes: live monitoring ofprogress, keep the cyclist informed (VoIP)

 Host Mobility Networks

• Host Mobility Network consisting of MNs that are connected to AP. AP

 provides connection among MNs in a single hop.

• Each AP has a finite range and MN is connected to an AP if and only if it is

in its range.

• When MN moves out of AP’s range, it can change its PoA regardless of theMNs surrounding it.
