As always it looked bigger on plan than on the ground. Somehow we managed to squeeze everybody and every station in. The doctors were working almost next to one another. The registration team had an area 3 m square. The eye- test and weight and height people were on a corridor that had queues in the midday sun! But in true Rotary spirit there wasn’t a murmur of discontent. Our helpers and members did what duties we were given and literally sweated it through. Even the air-conditioned room proved steamy given the crush of bodies in it. But the crowd that arrived early quickly thinned out and by noon, it was down to a steady flow. But it kept everybody busy till closing time at 3pm. The Mayor of Shah Alam, Y.B. Dato’ Mazalan bin Md. Noor, thanked RC Shah Alam and us for the noble undertaking But more than that it was the gratitude of those we helped that is so satisfying. You can really see it was 1Malaysia in action. Congrats to all especially Ee Lay and Sanjay who were the backbone of the project. James did much of the groundwork but had to miss the actual day because of illness. To those who attended to duties at the Camp, well done. We did almost 500 residents in the area a very good turn! ....by PE Poay Lim In 1949,the RI Board adopted the slogan Every Rotarian an Example to Youth as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist. Serving young people has long been an important part of the youth program. Youth service projects take many forms around the world. Rotarians sponsor Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, athletic teams, centers for disabled children, school safety patrols, summer camps, orphan- ages, recreation areas, safe driving clinics, country fairs, child-care centers and children's hospitals. Many clubs provide vocational counseling, establish youth employment programs and promote use of The 4-Way Test. Increasingly, drug/alcohol abuse prevention and AIDS awareness projects are being supported by Rotarians. In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models and mentors for the young people in their community. One learns to serve by observing others. RI Theme 2010-2011

RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announcedthe 2010-11 RI theme, Building Communities —Bridging Continents, during the opening plenarysession of the 2010 International Assembly .Klinginsmith said he arrived at the theme afterreviewing RI themes of years past. He noticedthat only a few spoke to non-Rotarians. “As a result, I decided to search for abriefly stated theme that would fulfill two objectives: the first to explain Rotaryto non-Rotarians, and the second to validate our work for Rotarians,” he said.“The words I have selected to describe Rotary’s current mission and tohighlight our achievements are what we do best: BuildingCommunities —Bridging Continents. “

Day breaks for Alzheimer’s families

For several years, Rotarian Robert Croux struggled to care for his wife,Vony, who had Alzheimer’s disease, at their home in Port-la-Nouvelle,France.

By 2002, she no longer recognized him or their children. One day while hewas taking a nap, she ran away. He brought her home, then built higherwalls around their villa and removed the doorknobs to try to keep her safe.

“Often she would tell me, `I do not know you! You have to leave!’” he said.

His wife’s long illness forced him to miss many Rotary club meetings. Hisfriends at the Rotary Club of Port-la-Nouvelle tried to help, as they watchedhim become “sad and withdrawn,” recalled club member Jean-ClaudeLamar. After consulting with experts in 2004, the club opened La HalteRépit (A Pause for Rest), a day care facility for patients with Alzheimer’s.

Although Vony died the next year, local families continue to bring theirparents and grandparents every Thursday afternoon to the center, housedin a town council building. Trained volunteers sing, play games, andexercise with patients for a few hours, giving the caregivers a much-neededbreak. Families pay only a small fee.

“Our project answers the families’ need to rest from time to time,” saidRotarian Jacques Laurant, who cofounded La Halte Répit. “And the familiestell us the patients are happier after they come here.”
