RCB meets every Monday at 7pm. Issue 8 August 25th, 2014

On 16th August, the Rotaract Club of Seshadripuram sponsored by the Rota-ry Club of Bangalore conducted its fi rst community service activity of Rotary Year - a blood donation camp at the Chamundi Scouts and Guides offi ce ,West Park Road, Malleswaram.

The President Rotaractor Shreyas and team had sent out posters to residences, places of worship and to educational institu-tions in and around the area. It was very in-teresting to note that the people who came forward were all there voluntarily and most were housewives and girls. It was striking to note that even a temple priest had come forward to donate blood.

Fifty units of blood were collected in half a day and Shivaji Rao Blood bank did a com-mendable job in getting the place ready and attending to every donor personally.

The residents and students of the locali- ty have asked for more camps periodically. The Rotaractors also spoke to the students and residents about Rotary and Rotaract and have managed to capture the interest of students and inspired them to become members of the Rotaract clubs. They cir-culated a write up on Rotaract movement to all the students who participated in the

camp.In fact Mr Manoj Kumar Ranmore, President of the Karnataka Maratha Wel-fare Association, a prominent social leader also incharge of the Shivaji Rao Blood bank who turned up at the camp offered to sup-port more camps of this kind in and around the area. Helping To Save Precious Lives

Blood is the lifeline of human existence. Advances in science has enabled our doc-tors to save human lives by transfusing blood whenever required by the patient. Blood is required by accident victims, by patients during different types of surgery, for certain blood disorders like Thalas-semia and haemophilia etc. Without the availability of blood, many human lives which can be saved will be lost. Unfortu-nately, blood cannot be manufactured and cannot be stored and sold at super-mar-kets. But, the good news is, all of us have inherited a blood producing factory within our body that does not incur any cost!

Blood donors put this factory to better use by donating their blood regularly. And, Rotary Club of Bangalore facilitates the blood collection, inspection, storage and fi nally transfusion through its various ser-vice organizations like Rotary-TTK Blood Bank.

Rotary Club of Bangalore posts regular updates on Facebook about our activities and some very interesting information about making a difference. We intend to use Facebook to showcase our projects, invite people from our society to participate in our projects in any way they can and most importantly, inspire people to make a difference. Buddies’ Night was a unique programme at RCB on 25/8/14, which was formulated with the intention of showcasing Rotary and RCB, to friends of Rotarians, so as to spread the good word about Rotary through society and make its reach travel far and wide. This event saw a packed hall with guests and members sitting cheek-by-jowl with each other, absorb-ing the presentations they were treated to, by Rotarians, who shared their common passion of Rotary, friendship, fellowship and service with them.

Paul Harris said a long time ago- “ Man has an affi nity for his fellowmen, regardless of race, creed or politics, and the greater the va-

riety, the more the zest. All friendliness needs is a sporting chance; it will take care of itself in any company.“ Building bridges and friend-ship – the very foundation of Rotary, was the centre point of the evening. It also breathed life into Paul Harris’ words – “Friendship is a natural and willing servant. There is no rea-son why the great power of friendship should not be harnessed to do it’s part in the world’s work.” That was the concept of ‘Buddies’ Night’, which said – bring them all along; let your friends hear of Rotary.

President Ramkumar Seshu spoke about how joining Rotary would make a difference to oneself and the community, through a video on the same topic, followed up by PP. Rtn. Dr. Pradeep. M. Rao, who then took

the audience through the greatness, might, far reaching projects and famous people of Rotary. RCB was chartered in 1934, with 25 members, the 7th club in pre-independent India. Member profi le was mainly business, with few professionals, adding a sprinkling of Indians, as the years went along. Indepen-dence saw the British exiting, and Indians becoming main-stream. Membership to RCB was always by invitation and was reserved

for the best in society. He enumerated the number of eminent people who were, and are members of RCB, stating that every member is important in her/ his own right. It is a matter of pride that RCB has had as members, lumi-naries from every fi eld, he said. Also, we have had the good fortune of hearing as speakers, several literary, scientifi c, legal, sporting and political greats, he said. RCB still inducts the fi nest – all leaders in their chosen vocations, he said. Several fl agship projects of RCB,

such as the Rotary- TTK Blood bank, RBV, Nagadevanahalli, Malur schools and many more were mentioned as the long standing efforts that have gone into the service of the community.

A video on the Rotary foundation was pre-sented by Rtn. Ramkumar Seshu, which showed the audience how Rotary has helped people all over the world, in matters relating to health, cleanliness, clean drinking water, vocational and student guidance – all with funds that reach the foundation from various sources. Rtn. Zarir Batha gave an insight into this service arm of Rotary , which address-es problems of illiteracy, poverty, disease all over the world, with no man-made boundaries

coming in the way of service to humanity. The corpus built up, has been possible through the generosity of Rotarians, philanthropists. Bill Gates foundation donated generously to Rotary’s major project of Polio eradication. Polio Plus put Rotary on the international map, by it’s perseverance in nearing its aim of eradicating the scourge that robs children of their health. This has been Rotary’s ma-jor and most signifi cant achievement. The Rotary- TTK Blood Bank has been possible through a 3-H grant and is one of the fi nest in Asia, offering varied modern, safe blood banking and related services. All this was ex-

plained by Dr. Ankit Mathur, from the blood bank.

It was the time to get to Fellowship and fun next, to give the guests a glimpse into the vast possibilities of light hearted seriousness Rotarians are capable of, while doing service ! Zarir Batha spoke on how fellowship brings Rotarian families together, giving talents a chance to shine, fl edgling novices a platform to grow and generally how fellowship activi-ties help in bonding and camaraderie. PDG Prithvi Raval spoke on IFMR – The Interna-

tional group of motorcyclists, who visit far and near places, zooming away on their bikes, all for the thrill of experiencing the unknown, in-dulge in fellowship and raise funds too along the way, for Rotary. IFMR, apart from being a major donor to the foundation, led a cam-paign, to make wearing helmets compulsory in Bangalore. He also took the attentive audi-ence through many other International hob-by groups that exist in the world of Rotary, saying any hobby can get a platform. He also shared interesting pictures of his biking expe-ditions to remote areas of India.

The meeting concluded with President Ramkumar Seshu explaining ‘Why Rotary?’,

through an audiovisual presentation that had various people from all over, saying how it brings people across the world, together, for a common purpose. Rotarians are ‘net ag-gregators’- they take and give back and are catalysts of change in all spheres that are important to humanity and the earth. The joy of giving, the satisfaction it gives , is inexpli-cable. “Giving is living”, said Rajendra Saboo. One has to experience it, to know, was the take home message.

Arch Klumph said “ If we work on immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full mean-ing of the spirit of Rotary as expressed in our objects, we are engraving on those tab-lets, something that will brighten all eternity.” President Ram thanked the anchor of the programme Pradeep Rao and his team for

attempting to do just that, thanking all guests present for having honoured the invitation extended to them. The spirit of Rotary then pervaded fellowship and dinner, which further enhanced the evening
