RCB meets every Monday at 7pm. Issue 19 November 10, 2014 The Joy Of Giving! : Part 2 The month of November being The Rota- ry Foundation Month , we give you glimps- es into the minds of some of our Major Donors on to why they chose to donate to this Foundation and the happiness and sat- isfaction they found by doing so! Continuing from last week, this week we have a few more Major Donors talking to us about it, as we hope that their words and opinion will create a ripple effect and inspire others to become Major Donors. “It is always good to have a Monday meeting devoted to educating Rotarians, especially newly joined members about The Rotary Foundation, by having a good speaker talking about it” continues Major Donor Rtn. Vijayarajan. “It was when PDG Rtn. Prithvi Raval spoke about the Rotary Foundation and its various programs in one of the Monday meetings of our Club many years ago that I became aware of it. Years later, PRIP Rtn. Kalyan Banerjee in one of the District Assemblies appealed to all Ro- tarians to contribute liberally for this cause, and that was when I decided to become Major Donor!”. His next few words, I am sure will moti- vate many of us to follow his example. Rtn. Vijay says “Most humans are wired to feel empathy and compassion. We want to help, but some ways of helping are more effec- tive than others. Contributing to the Rotary Foundation is one such way. It gives you a global reach. The joy that one experienc- es while giving back to society in whichev- er way, has no parallel. Donating a bit of money may not seem like much, but if your donation is joined with others, it becomes something much bigger. The Rotary Foun- dation offers this ideal opportunity. When one feels settled in life, it would be a good idea to contribute a significant portion of your savings to charity. Don’t you think we owe this to our society, which has given us much without expecting anything in return?” Well- spoken indeed! Major Donor Rtn. K.N.Prabhashankar feels that hearing Late Rtn. PDG. M Sreeni- vasa Rao speaking about Foundation when he was the District Governor in 1987-88 in- spired him to contribute. He further goes on to say that he chose this Foundation to con- tribute in comparison with another because Rotary Foundation is our Foundation. He assures that it is the most trustworthy In- stitution in the world where you can be rest assured that your contribution will reach the right person. All he wanted to see was a smile on the face of the ‘needy’. He also says, “We can motivate more Ro- tarians to become Major Donors by creating awareness and talking about the benefits of contribution to the Rotary Foundation. Talk about the projects the Rotary Foundation has assisted and due to which how many lives have been saved. Ask them to ex- perience ‘Joy of Giving’. Recognize every donor in an appropriate forum” is his piece of advice. Coming to our next Major Donor Rtn. N. Gowrishankar who says he heard of the Rotary Foundation in those days, through word of mouth. He adds, “I was aware of the functionality of the process. But for me, inspiration comes from within. It is always our duty to help in any way possible.” He chose the Rotary Foundation to make his big donation as he felt that it was good to know that we were not the only ones try- ing to make a difference, but people from around the world were doing the same. This was credibility enough! Talking about his motives and expecta- tions Rtn. Gowrishankar says “My motives were extremely simple and pure. We want- ed to make an impact on the lives of others, and the less fortunate. Education is an im- portant part of my family’s foundation, and we hoped that our contributions would help in the same. Motivation must come from within. One must feel energised by the ser- vice they do, and must be keen to ensure the progress of our people and country.” Having heard from these generous Ro- tarians, we hope their words will be power- ful enough to make the Rotary Family real- ise that by adding value to the lives around us and in turn engaging yourself in a more worthy purpose, you discover that, you then are living a more worthy life ! Fund Raising for Rotary TTK Blood Bank

The arrangement between RCB and TTK for funding the project was that, RCB should create infrastructure by way of Land, Build-ing, Equipments and assets. TTK should run the project efficiently and should take care of all the expenses of running the blood bank.

So, the onus of mobilizing the funds for acquisition of asset was a big concern. The flow of money was also not easy those days, it was very difficult and people did not have so much of money to spare.

Land was allotted by BDA. For Building ground floor, RCB needed lot of money. There was no way how you could approach Rotary Foundation for this as Rotary Foun-dation does not give grants for Buildings. So the entire amount had to be collected. Late Rtn. PDG. P T Kasturi, the founder of BMST, supplied bricks free of cost for the

entire building. He was running business of Brick kiln. Members of RCB contributed generously. Late PDG. Capt. V V K Mani and Rtn. Kasturi came with a brilliant idea of going door to door in Indiranagar area collecting old newspapers to raise funds. They were well supported by Rotractors and Rotarians of RCB. They also came with a unique idea of selling one brick at Rs.1,000/- per brick. They requested mem-bers and public to contribute towards bricks. They raised lot of funds through this. Capt. Mani when he was taking over as the Pres-ident of RCB for the year 1991-92, decided that he will focus only on BMST and all the funds raised during the year by the Club will go to BMST. One Rotarian contributed free steel for the construction, another Rotarian supplied free pipes and pipe fittings free of cost for plumbing work. With all these ef-

forts, finally the Ground floor was complet-ed in the year 1991-92 and then RI Presi-dent Raja Saboo inaugurated the project, Capt. Mani being the President of the Club.

As far as the required equipments were concerned, the Club got the first ever in the zone a 3H grant of $100,000 from Rotary Foundation. The Club contributed 10% of the required sum as their contribution. Thereafter many Matching Grants were availed and all the required equipment’s were added. To add the first and second floor, RCB raised funds and TTK’s matched the contribution of RCB.

Fund raising was possible only because of clear vision of our seniors like Late PDG. P T Kasturi, Late PDG. Capt. VVK Mani, Late Rtn. K Arun Kumar and many philan-thropists who contributed for the cause.

First Impressions : Rotary-TTK BloodbankOn 9th November, Community Services

Committee of our club organized their monthly committee meeting at our pres-tigious project, Rotary TTK Bloodbank in Indiranagar. Here are some excerpts from what members felt about our project.

I was very impressed seeing the inside of the blood bank activities. The efforts the team is putting into high quality standards to ensure that only the right blood is going to the hospitals, the creativity to find new donors and to look into other areas like training as well as stem cell activities. You have to be there to see and feel all the good work being done.

Rtn. Weber GuenterThe journey of a bottle of blood “From

vein to vein” as I saw it at the Rotary TTK Blood Bank was one of sheer dedication, determination and total commitment of Dr. Latha Jaganathan and her team. I feel proud to belong to the RCB family.

Ann. Anu SreedharVisited our 24x7, State-of-the-Art Blood

Bank. Enjoyed the feeling of knowing that we help save precious lives! Humbled to be an RCB member and do my bit.

Rtn. Ramesh Dasary

Filled with Pride and amazement at the humongous service DR. Latha and her team are doing. Humbleness of the Team gave me a sense of fulfillment of being a part of the Blood Bank.

Rtn. Dr. Gertrude D’SouzaYeoman Service to mankind. I was simply

amazed at the project site. The Rotary TTK Blood Bank is truly a signature project and a flagship one. I am excited to be part of it. Long live RCB

Rtn. Ravi Shankar AHats off to TTK Rotary Blood Bank for its

endeavor in saving millions of lives.Rtn. Dr. Ganapathy M.A.

It would be a good idea to form a Corps of Volunteers on the lines of National Cadet Corps consisting of Rotarians, Inner Wheel Members & Rotoractors to act as volun-teers as and when assistance is required by the Blood Bank. They should be on call & perhaps on group email/sms.

Dr Lata must address the Club, Inner wheel members and Rotaractors in a spe-cial meeting and share the same impres-sive presentation she made to us at the project visit.

Dare to Dream! Think Big! Do More! Aim Higher!

PDG Rtn. Ravi Vadlamani in his impec-cable style captivated the audience for 20 minutes. He endearingly began his speech recollecting association with our President Ram Seshu from their days in Round Table.

He said the Rotary had one of the best Foundations in the world with a four star rating. Rotary International is a global en-terprise consisting of 34,000 clubs from 200 countries and around 1.2 million members. The goal of the foundation was to raise 1 billion US dollars by 2017, the year Rotary would celebrate 100 years. He urged RCB to be a part of it with more donors of USD 10,000. People, he said contribute to chari-ty because of 5 I’s - Issues, Investment, In-volvement, Impact and Innovation.

Rtn. Ravi also spoke about the Name Endowment fund of USD 25,000 and its unique ability to be a perpetual fund. This fund is managed by a very competent fund manager. The donor can choose the project he wishes to support. He urged few mem-

bers to join together and pool in to create a fund. In fact such a fund can also be constituted in the name of a Rotarian. He suggested the ‘Term Fund’ with a minimum donation of USD 30,000 which is ideal for donors outside the Rotary fraternity.

He has personally created 3 endowment funds. The first one with his wife Rtn. Raji Vadlamani, and two others in the names of his late parents Valli Bhaskar Lakshmi and Uma Maheshwar Rao. Each of these funds supports the literary programs of the Rota-ry association and has given him immense gratitude in the service rendered.

In his trademark slogan ‘Dare to Dream’, he urged Rotarians to think big, do more and aim higher than ever before. He con-cluded his inspiring speech with an apt say-ing from Khalil Gibran- ‘All that you have, will one day be given. Let the season of giv-ing happen during your life rather than that of your inheritors.’
