Holy Spirit and partner RC Settle D1040 of Yorkshire England respond to the neprimary means of livelihood in Northern Leyte

On January 18, 2014, RC Holy Spirit turned over a check inhe amount of P138,222.80 to Caritas Novaliches Founda-ion in support of the organizations rehabilitation efforts inive parishes in Northern Leyte. The five parishes are lo-

cated in the towns of Leyte, Calubian, San Isidro and Ta-

bango which are farming and fishing rural areas. One areaof aid for the rehabilitation of the affected areas is the liveli-hood program specifically for fishermen who lost their smallishing boats to the strong winds of Super Typhoon YolandaHaiyan).

Rev Fr Luciano Ariel Felloni, Executive Director of CaritasNovaliches, stated that their initial target for this livelihoodprogram is to have 100 motorized fishing boats for the 5parishes. Each parish is planned to receive at least 20boats as a start. For this aid effort, the fishermen and men-olk in the areas would be building the fishing vessels which

are estimated to cost P21,000 each (with engine and two

ets of nets). When the boats are available, they will beurned over to parish-based fishermen cooperatives that

would then rent these out to fishermen who had lost theirishing boats to the typhoon. Each boat would provide liveli-

hood opportunities for at least two families, those of theisherman and an assistant. The cooperative would eventu-

ally work on trading of harvests from the sea. In addition toestoring lost livelihood, the fishermen could resume their

previous task of protecting the waters off Northern Leyterom dynamite fishing.

Of the amount turned over to Caritas Novaliches for the pro-curement of motorized bancas , P113,215.80 was donatedby RC Settle. The rest came from balance of donations offriends of RC Holy Spirit.

Present during the turn-over were IPP Marcia Salvador, PPPed Condeno, Adm Chair Ric Salvador and Rtn Angel Castro, who has been actively involved in the humanitarian projectsof both the Caritas Novaliches and St Benedict Parish inHoly Spirit.

RC Holy Spirit officers led by FC President Bong, IPPMarcia Salvador, PP Ped Condeno, Angel Castro andRic Salvador discuss the appeal for help from five par-ish priests from the Lady of Fatima Vicariate, Calu-bian, Diocese of Naval (Northern Leyte) and officers ofCaritas Novaliches Foundation last December 17,2013.

Aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan onthe primary means of livelihood: small-scale fishing and coconut farming un-der tenancy relationship with landown-ers.

HUANG ENCOURAGES CLUB MEMBERS TO LIGHT UP ROTARY

RI President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Ro-tary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired bythe teachings of Chinese philosopher Confuciouswho said: "It is better to light a single candle, than to sitand curse the darkness."

"There are so many problems in the world, so many peo-ple who need help. Many people say, 'There's nothing Ican do.' So they sit there doing nothing. Meanwhile eve-rything stays dark," Huang told the 537 district gover-nors and their spouses and partners who are attendingthe 2014 International Assembly in San Diego, Califor-nia.

"The Rotary way is the Confucius way. The Rotary way isto light a candle. I light one, you light one, 1.2 millionRotarians light one. Together, we light up the world,"said Huang, who is a member of the Rotary Club ofTaipei in Taiwan.

After announcing his theme at the opening session ofthe five-day training meeting, Huang urged club mem-bers to Light Up Rotary in the coming year by hosting aRotary Day in their community and including local Rota-ract and Interact members in their service projects.

"How you Light Up Rotary is up to you," Huang said. "Youknow where you are strong, you know what your com-munity needs, and you know how you can help."

Huang also shared his membership development goals, including the need for more women and young adultsand his goal to increase membership to a total of 1.3

million members. He asked Rotarians to invite theirspouses, family members, and friends to join Rotary.

"We need to assume leadership for building strongclubs, and that starts with bringing in new members," hesaid.

Addressing the status of the fight against polio, Huangnoted that with the current momentum Rotary is ontrack to achieve full polio eradication by 2018."When we eradicate polio and we will we will haveproved ourselves an organization capable of greatthings. And we'll be even better equipped for the nextchallenge we choose to take on. We'll have given theworld a gift that will endure forever," he said.

By continuing to fight against polio, setting an examplein local communities, and growing membership, Huanghopes to see Rotary shine brighter than ever.

"Light Up Rotary is our theme, but it is more than ourtheme. It is how we live in Rotary, how we think in Ro-tary, how we feel, how we work," Huang said. "It is howwe make a difference every day, in every club, everydistrict, and every country where we serve."

    GLANCE

Rotary is made up of three parts: at the heart of Rotary are our clubs, who are supported by Rotary International and TheRotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation uses generous donations to fund projects by Rotarians and our partners in communitiesaround the world. As a nonprofit, all of the Foundation's funding comes from voluntary contributions made by Rotariansand friends who share our vision of a better world.
