White Elephant Because albino elephants are so rare, custom at the court
of the King of Siam used to decree that they be given noth-
ing but the best by their owners. So whenever a courtier
angered him badly, the King used to announce that he
was planning, as a mark of his special regard, to presentthe man with one of his own royal white elephants. The
courtier then had to choose between insulting the King by
refusing the gift or being ruined by the expense of keeping
it. Mostly, the luckless courtiers decamped in a hurry - as
the King had hoped. The phrase was brought into the Eng-
lish language by travellers to Siam who had witnessed
the court custom. It now means any useless and burden-
some gift.
