INTRODUCTIONDid you know there are three different types of compound words (closed, hyphenated and open compounds)? In this power point there will be information about one type of compound word then a slide with a story, which is continued throughout the power point. To find out more read my power point.

CLOSED COMPOUNDSA closed compound is a word made by two or more smaller words to make a new word.

EXAMPLES: Popcorn, Sunglasses, Sometimes, Weekend, Nitwit

THE HOMELESS MANThe girl was walking down the

street, she walks a mile sometimes. She eats popcorn and drinks pink lemonade when she gets home from her walks. On weekends she walks two miles. She once passed a homeless man.

HYPHENATED COMPOUNDSHyphenated compounds are two or

more words connected by hyphens ( - ). They are often used when words are confusing without them.

EXAMPLES: High-five, Flip-flop, Warm-up, Jack-in-the-box, Itty-bitty

THE HOMELESS MANWearing pants and a shirt the

homeless man looked old. All he had was a jack-in-the-box, which looked like he had owned it for years. When she asked him about his life he said he hadn’t lived in a home since he was an itty-bitty child. She went home and came back with food for the man.

OPEN COMPOUNDSOpen compounds are a

combination of words representing one idea. These words always have to be in specific order. If you change the order you change the meaning.

EXAMPLES: Beach ball, High school, Cotton candy, Hot dogs, Holy moly

THE HOMELESS MANShe gave him three hot dogs and

some cotton candy. She asked him how old he was and he said he would’ve been in high school. She also asked him what he wanted as a job. He said he wanted to be a news reporter. She told him to visit a news station and ask them for a job. He did and he got a job.

WHAT- SO WHAT- THEN WHAT This power point has been about the three types of compound words. They are closed compounds, hyphenated compounds, and open compounds. You are probably wondering why I am telling you this. I am telling you this because your spelling will be better, your writing will be better and more interesting and you’ll be smarter. In math there are hyphenated number words. In reading and writing you’ll find all types of compound words. Because of this, you’ll understand all subjects better.
