ABOUT RAYZIST PHOTOMASK, INC.B a c k i n t h e 1 9 7 0 ’ s , Raymond L. Zukowski really didn’t know how far his idea would take him. But that idea—to develop an easier way to create stencils for carving signage and artwork—drove Ray to

create Rayzist Photomask, Inc. Ray worked tirelessly from his Arizona garage for several years, before hiring his friend Randy S. Willis to help him. The two-man team reached a milestone in 1983, when they secured a large order for the U.S. Olympics. Suddenly, Rayzist Photomask was tasked to produce 250,000 photoresist stencils. The mid-to-late 1980’s were a time of fast growth and progress for Rayzist; Ray and Randy became trusted partners in the stained glass, glass art, signage and monument industries. They began producing sandcarving equipment and materials for resale. This growth prompted Rayzist’s relocation to a 35,000 square foot facility in Vista, California. By 1990, Rayzist Photomask was developing a strong culture for innovation, producing market-first photoresist films and processing systems, while making major investments in commercial equipment.

The innovation continued after the turn of the century. Rayzist made major advancements in photoresist film as well as the design of sandcarving systems.

From the beginning, customers have chosen Rayzist because we provide the unique combination of manufacturer direct support, along with innovative equipment and supplies. These values will continue to differentiate us as the premier manufacturer in the industry, for companies large and small across the world.

SANDCARVING SYSTEMSThere are hundreds of sandcarving systems on the market today. Be sure to purchase a sandcarving system that is built specifically for the decorative etching market. Features your system should include are:; a quality dust collector, auto recycling pressure pot, on/off activated foot switch, gloveless sleeves, and effective interior lighting. (2034VXA adjustable model shown)

ABRASIVEAluminum oxide or silicon carbide, 150 grit, is recommended for sandcarving on glass. A higher grit number equates to finer abrasive; a lower grit number equates to coarser abrasive.

SANDCARVING FILMThe Complete Mask Making Kit has everything you need to produce your own photomask stencils. (see page 7)

AIR COMPRESSORYour sandcarving system will require an air compressor to operate. We recommend purchasing a heavy duty, cast iron air compressor. It is important to purchase a quality air compressor to keep up with your air consumption of 5.5 CFM blasting at 30 PSI with a standard 3/32 nozzle. (We recommend Grainger model # 4TW29.)

A Photoresist that stands alone!

SR3000™ has industry-leading

durability and resolution capabilities.

You can trust it with half-tone images

or ultra high resolution images, for deep

etches or fine details, and on flat or

curved surfaces. The 3 mil thickness is

designed to push the envelope in high

resolution designs; you can blast finely

detailed images without the worry. Use

the 5 mil to achieve a deeper etch or

multi-stage carving. You will be thrilled

with the results.

3 mil is for fine detailed artwork and halftone photos. A light surface etch is recommended when using 3 mil material for some of the following surfaces; (but is not limited to) crystal, glass, hard metals, acrylics and plastics.

4 mil is appropriate for moderately detailed artwork and lettering. A moderate-to-deep engraving is recommended when using 4 mil photoresist; this material provides the best of both worlds and can be used on any surface.

5 mil is for bolder lettering and artwork. Moderate to deep stage carving is recommended when using 5 mil photoresist; works best with wine bottles and any hard surface.

Butch Young will focus on the Art of Sandcarving in these classes. She will personally instruct you to sandcarve glass as you never thought possible with techniques and other invaluable tricks, tips and secrets of the trade that last a lifetime.

I’ve made my living in the decorat ive sandblast ing medium for almost twenty-two years. During these years, I’ve blasted on almost anything you can think of. I have commissions in high-end galleries, institutions, casinos,

airports, private collections, restaurants, bars, and homes all over the world. However, it has always been my opinion that it doesn’t matter what I can do, if I can’t teach others to succeed as well. Rayzist and I are working together to bring you a set of unique classes that will revolutionize the blasting curriculum as we now know it.

Butch Young graduated from the University of New Mexico with major degrees in English, Anatomy and Physiology, as well as minors in Art and French. In 1987, she embarked upon her glass education, learning the rudiments of stained glass, and quickly mastering the techniques of glass-etching and multi-stage deep carving. Butch’s work has been featured in galleries in San Francisco, Hawaii, Los Angeles, and sold throughout the world.
