RAYMER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL June 2017 NEWSLETTER

September Start Up 2017 Our anticipated enrollment will be around 243 students with 12 divisions for 2017/2018. Our staff continues to work tirelessly to plan and design class compositions that take into consideration many factors for student success. Our goal is a smooth transition for all students.

Class placements for September: Please note that on Tuesday, September 5th all students will report to their previous homerooms. New students will report to the Library. Kindergarten students have a gradual entry—notices to follow. The first full Kindergarten day is September 13, 2017. Please visit our school website prior to school start-up to stay well informed of plans for September (www.ray.sd23.bc.ca). School Supplies: All student supplies necessary for next year can be purchased through the school at a very reasonable price ($30 for the year). School District 23 has set up a secure and convenient on-line system for paying for school supplies and fees. The link to the on-line payment system is on our web page and the system will be able to accept your payments in late August.

Walking Your Wheels at School

All students are reminded that gear with wheels (i.e. skateboards, bikes, scooters, rollerblades, and Heely’s ) may only be walked or carried on school

grounds.

For safety reasons, no riding, scoo ng or ska ng is permi ed inside or

outside the building.

The last day for student sign out is Friday June 9th. All student books are due back in the library by Friday June 16th. Please have a good look for overdue and missing books and return to our school. We charge a replacement cost of $5 for each item lost or damaged. If the book is found, we happily return your money. This year Raymer Elementary will be doing Recycle-Reread. This program gives students a chance to add new books to their personal reading collections for free. This is how it works. Students are asked to collect books from home that they are no longer reading and that are still in good condition. No magazines please, but comic books are welcomed. Students bring these books to school and teachers will keep track of how many books they brought. You can bring in your books from June 5 to June 13 Books must be in good condition and appropriate for 5 to 12 year old children. For each book students bring to school for the Recycle-Reread campaign they will be given the opportunity to exchange for one book of their choice. Students with large numbers of books will be encouraged to take only 5 books and give their remaining choices to classmates who might not have books to exchange or they can come down after the initial selections and choose their remaining books. Classes will be invited to the library to choose their books on Friday June 16th. If you have any questions please email Charlotte Morris at [email protected] The Okanagan Regional Library will introduce their summer programs to our students on Friday June 23rd. It is free to register and partici-pate in these programs. The registration must be done in person and starts on Saturday June 24th and the downtown branch. All libraries in the Okanagan Regional system host summer programs and you can register or join programs at other branches.

Origami Club

Thank you Zoe Kim for facilitating the Origami Club. An average of over 30 and sometimes 45 students enjoyed this incredi-

ble opportunity.

Be Sun Savvy

The UV Index is a measure of the intensity of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation in the sun-

burning spectrum. As the UV Index in-creases, the sun’s rays can do more harm to your skin, eyes, and immune system. In Canada, the UV Index ranges from 0 to 10 and is issued in the weather forecast. As the UV Index increases from 0 to 10, take

more precautions.

In the spring, ozone depletion is at its worst so skin damage can occur quickly. Take the same precautions you do in the sum-

mer.

In the summer, consider doing outside ac vi‐es such as swimming before 11 a.m. or a er 4

p.m. Water and sand reflect UV radia on. Find shade, wear clothes that cover your skin, a hat,

and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going into the sun and reapply

every 2 hours.

Switch to a “Green” Lifestyle to improve air quality!

* Push a hand mower and use a rake instead of a leaf blower.

* Compost your garden leftovers.

* Choose EnergyStar when buying lights or appliances like washers and dryers. Wash your clothes in cold water and hang them out to dry in-

stead of using a dryer, when you can.

* Buy local products. The average meal travels 2,500 km to our plate.

When we buy local we cut down travel time which helps decrease air

pollution.
