In november 2015 vieren wij in Suriname veertig jaar
onafhankelijkheid.
Life starts at forty, doesn’t it?
varieerde Surinaamse keuken in combinatie
Drs. Clyde Cairo
With great pleasure, we present to you our Travel
Magazine, taking you on a journey into the world of
fun things in and around Suriname. Geographically a
part of South America, having a strong historical and
cultural link to the Caribbean, and population-wise a
melting pot of inhabitants from all corners of the world.
That’s Suriname.
In November 2015, we celebrate forty years of inde-
pendence in Suriname. As the national carrier, Surinam
Airways will let you, the passenger, join in on the festivi-
ties later during the year.
Life starts at forty, doesn’t it? In the past forty years,
the young nation set an example of diversity and co-
lourfulness. This despite the political, economic and
social turbulence that Suriname has undergone. As
a young nation, we are confidently working toward a
more prosperous Suriname. In the year 2015, we can
count ourselves fortunate when it comes to natural
beauty, biodiversity and the presence of natural resour-
ces. The cultural diversity and the harmony between so
many different groups is what strongly characterizes
Suriname. That’s what Surinamese people are proud
of, and we are happy to share that with you.
Our tourism sector is rapidly developing, working very
hard on further improvement and professionalization
of the Surinamese tourist product. The varied Surina-
mese cuisine, combined with Surina-
mese hospitality and kindness, start
on board with us. Enjoy every
minute of it, and please do let
us know if we can do anything
to make things as comfortable
as possible for you. l

You may not think so at first glance, but
the sloth doesn’t always have an easy life.
Humans have a big impact on the life it
and its relatives, which include anteaters and ar-
madillos, lead.
Deforestation causes the natural habitat of the Xenarthra –
the collective name for these animals – to become increasingly
smaller, and the increasing car traffic frequently claims victims.
That’s why Green Heritage Fund Suriname (GHFS) is building a
rehabilitation centre in Suriname, where any orphans or woun-
ded animals can be helped. In the centre, they are looked after
until they can eventually be released into the wild again. That’s
good news for the sloths, anteaters and armadillos themselves,
but also for visitors to the centre. Thanks to this initiative, school
children, tourists and researchers learn more about the animals
and how they can best be protected.
GHFS has been rescuing animals
since 2005, in a private house
up to now. That means limi-
ted space, but fortunately a
great new location will be
added soon. The finishing
touches are put to brand
new animal shelters for the
Xenarthra programme at the
Colakreek recreation resort. Visi-
tors are welcome to get to know the
animals, and to help look after them. Of course the objective
of this centre is to bring the animals back to nature as soon as
possible, but as long as they need looking after, school children
and researchers can enjoy these extraordinary animals up close.

Een uitdagende droom werd werkelijk-
heid en de verlegen jongen ontpopte
zich tot een succesvolle stand up kome-
diant. Rayen Gangaram Panday (30) koos bewust
typisch strenge opvoeding meekregen.
verlegen, bescheiden jongen was.
vertoond.
Studenten Cabaret Festival (GSCF).

An ambitious dream became reality, and
the shy boy turned into a succes-
sful stand-up comedian. Rayen
Gangaram Panday (30) consciously
chose a life on stage. “I just had
to have a go at this!”
Panday grew up in Zaandam (Netherlands), but was not
raised in Dutch fashion at all. His Surinamese parents gave
their Surinamese-Dutch children the typical, strict upbringing. Con-
tradicting was out of the question, and following the strict rules was
a matter of course. This caused Panday to be a shy, modest boy
well into his twenties. But he secretly dreamt of a career that, to
him, was very challenging. He wanted to be on a stage, and make
the audience laugh. “I used to be very shy, probably because I was
often reprimanded by my parents. I was raised quite strictly, but
with a lot of love, of course,” he says, laughing. In hindsight, he’s
very grateful to them. He learned to turn his past experiences into
a weapon for his future career.
The seed for stand-up comedy was planted in Panday by watching
stand-up comedy shows that were broadcast on TV. Slowly, it de-
veloped into a desire that brought him to participate in the 22nd
Groninger Studenten Cabaret Festival (GSCF) in 2008. The festival
has been around for 28 years, and has grown to be one of the four
largest cabaret festivals in the Netherlands, apart from the Leidse
Cabaret Festival, Camaretten, and the Amsterdam Kleinkunst Fes-
tival. Of these, the GSCF is the only festival that’s still being organi-
zed for and by students. The idea to participate was supported by
well-known comedians such as Jandino Asporaat and Soundos El
Ahmadi, who had already made their mark in the world of enter-
tainment. “I told them that I would love to try it myself. They encou-
raged me to do it, and told me about an open stage. So I thought,
because I’d had this feeling for some time, I just have to have a go

zou willen proberen.
Improviseren was,
Up Comedy podia.
bliek is hier hartelijk.
eerste rij zal zitten.
ben.” l
at this once in my life.” He
prepared his performance
in front of the mirror. “I told
myself, it doesn’t matter
what happens, even if so-
mething catches fire that
night, I was going to do this
the way I planned it,” Pan-
day says. Improvising was
out of the question, due to
nerves and sweaty palms.
Because of his inexperi-
ence, he religiously stuck to
what he had come up with.
“But I didn’t know if I was
actually good. At the end of
the show, I heard people
talk, and they were pointing
at the ones they liked. They
also pointed at me. This startled me, and I thought, ‘did they like
me?’” After this baptism of fire, the nerves were gone, and Rayen
wanted to take to the stage again right away. The child-like joy is
still noticeable in his eyes as he reminisces. Travelling back in time
seems, despite the reality of it, still a fairy tale. He reached the se-
mi-finals with ease, after which he won a personality award in the
final. A sort of second prize. He had gotten started, and couldn’t
be stopped now. Panday, once so shy, is a cut above the rest now.
These days, Rayen can be found on open Stand Up Comedy sta-
ges almost every week. He has participated in several TV shows
and theatre productions. The show he’s touring with this year, is
called Vrijspraak. According to Rayen, the idea behind this show is
the desire to be free in your mind. “I started to talk more and more
about my parents, my old situation at home, and what used to
bother me. It’s become a sort of therapy. Now I can talk about the
things that bothered me, and have noticed that I feel understood
when people can laugh about it.” In Suriname, the name Rayen
Panday is starting to get fairly well-known. He was there recently
with Roué Verveer, Murth Mossel, Jetty Mathurin and Deng Boi Fu
A Birti for a show. “The only funny Hindustani,” Verveer introdu-
ces him when it’s Rayen’s turn to do his act. Fortunately, he’s no
stranger to self-deprecating humour, and this remark isn’t found
offensive. Rayen is not only very funny, he also has a good singing
voice. The audience starts laughing when he starts to sing a cap-
pella, clearly in the Kabula genre. “Suriname feels like home. The
audience is very friendly here. They either start laughing, or they
don’t laugh at all.” It does mean that his relatives will always sit
in the front row when he performs here. Initially, he found this dif-
ficult. “My grandmother came to watch, and told me the things I’m
saying are getting ever worse. She often wonders how I ended up
in this business.” l

eten ontzettend belangrijk is.
Gezond
eten is eigenlijk vooral puur eten.
Pure
cacao is ontzettend gezond.
even niet zo lekker in hun vel zitten.
dus lekker én gezond genieten in

Last van bladluizen? Dan
bieden lieveheersbeestjes uitkomst.
Of course we all want to be healthy and feel good.
How you do that is different for everyone. Some
love to work out for a few hours at the gym, others
prefer yoga. Whatever your preference, eating
healthily is of the utmost importance for everyone.
Vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants: our body
needs them very much. Fortunately, eating heal-
thily does not have to be complicated, it’s a matter
of knowing what’s good for you. Eating healthily
is actually mostly eating purely. Choosing organic
produce, cultivated in a sustainable manner. Fortu-
nately, the number of healthy alternatives on offer
in Suriname is ever increasing. And did you know
superfoods like cocoa and coconut grow here naturally? Deliciously fresh
and healthy, straight from the source!
Pure cocoaChocolate may not have the healthiest of reputations, but at the heart
of this treat is actually a true superfood. Pure cocoa is extremely heal-
thy. It’s packed with antioxidants, good for heart and blood vessels, and
works as a natural antidepressant. No wonder then, that many people
reach for the chocolate when they’re not feeling their best. Cocoa was
widely cultivated during the plantation era, but also grows in the wild
along river banks in the inland. If you want to find out more about truly
Surinamese cocoa products, you can attend
a workshop, following the process from
tree to bar. These cocoa bars – skrati
in Surinamese – are traditionally dis-
solved in warm milk or water, for a
healthy and delicious drink. So that’s
both delicious and healthy in one.
Organically betterOf course it’s important what you eat – sufficient
fruit and vegetables, not too much fat – but how
it’s grown is also essential. More and more people
prefer organic products, grown without chemical
pesticides. At the Biofarm Pikin Sranan – meaning
‘little Suriname’ – that’s part of everyday life. To
keep pests away from the crops, the help of Mo-
ther Nature is called in. Has an ant colony decided
to settle among the tea plants? Scattering moringa
leaves causes them to look out for another place
to live. Aphids giving you problems? Then ladybirds
are the answer. At the Biofarm, it’s all about organic
crops and organic solutions. For the treatment of various ailments, nature is
also called on. For instance, the moringa powder tea grown at Pikin Sranan
gives a multivitamin boost, and the pure coconut oil is a natural antibiotic.
See also www.pikinsranan.net.
Super soupSoup boring? Not at Souposo. Each day, a different super soup is on the
menu here, with many exotic varieties, such as peanut soup, banana soup
and cassava soup with anjumara. In this cosy soup restaurant in the heart
of Paramaribo, they only cook with fresh and organic products. At Souposo,
everything is delicious, honest and fresh. By constantly developing new reci-
pes, the hip soup bar introduces soup lovers to various combinations and
surprising flavours. Apart from the soups, other warm dishes and fresh fruit
shakes, juices and cakes are also served. When packaging the products,
they also think of the environment; everything is biodegradable. Feel like
having soup during your stay in Paramaribo? Souposo can be found in
an authentic Surinamese building at Costerstraat 20a, right in the heart
of the city. l
Organic, vegetables, sustainable. When it comes to food, health is perhaps the most important criterion
these days. Food’s impact on our body gets more and more attention. Pure and healthy eating is also
gaining ground in Suriname.

Biologisch, plantaardig, duurzaam.

LIVING AND WORKING IN THE JUNGLE
Maria Cuijpers (55) vertelt over haar ervaringen
Ik was heel be-
men veel lol gehad. Deze kinderen hebben ieder voor zich een
plekje in mijn hart veroverd!”

You get to know Suriname and its inhabitants
in a completely different way by working as a
volunteer. That is possible in Paramaribo, but
also by living in the jungle for a while. Maria took up
the challenge and worked as a volunteer at a small
school in the Paramacca district, in the east of Suri-
name.
“I CAN’T LET GO OF SURINAME ANYMORE”
Maria Cuijpers (55) talks about her experiences as a
teacher in the Surinamese jungle:
“I worked abroad a lot, and after being back in the Netherlands
for a while, I wanted to get going again. Suriname attracted me
enormously because of the mixture of cultures, but also because
of the Amazonian forest. I was very curious what it would be like
to live in the jungle, far away from all the Western comforts. After
quite a bit of deliberation, I took the plunge and decided to just
do it: I went to Suriname!”
“Once I got to Suriname, I ended up in a Maroon village, where
I could start work as a teacher in elementary school. I lived in a
wooden house, with my neighbours being a fellow teacher and
the village nurse. Although Dutch is the official language of Suri-
name, mostly local languages are spoken in the inland, Paramac-
can in this case. Poor Dutch is the main reason for the largest
part of school children not getting their elementary school di-
ploma. So part of my work was about improving Dutch. That I
did not speak Paramaccan, encouraged the children to do their
utmost to speak Dutch. They loved coming to classes, and we
had a lot of fun together. Every one of these children has gained
a place in my heart!”
“Not all the adults in the village speak and write Dutch well
either, so I taught them in the afternoons. They were highly mo-
tivated and grateful. That way, I picked up more and more Pa-
ramaccan words. After three months, it was incredibly hard to
leave again, there was so much more I wanted to do! Pupils really
flourished thanks to the extra support. I felt so much at home in
the inland, that I am already planning my next trip to Suriname.
It’s such a special country, with such extraordinary people, I just
cannot let go of it!”
Alleen ongedierte bezorgde me wel eens
kippenvel.”

Hanny Koopman (54) also rose to the challenge of
volunteering in the jungle, at the O.S. Loka Loka ele-
mentary school.
“I’VE LEARNED THAT I CAN ALSO BE HAPPY WITH LESS COMFORT”
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the desire to do some-
thing abroad one day. Doing something in the sense of helping,
exchanging knowledge, specifically with children. I am a mother
of two grown sons, and have worked in child care and education
all my life. While looking for a destination, Suriname caught my
eye, and I thought: that’s where I want to go! I’ve worked with
a lot of Surinamese families in Amster-
dam, and their cheerfulness and socia-
bility attracted me. The climate seemed
pleasant to me, and the fact that you
can communicate in Dutch seemed to
be an advantage.”
“I didn’t have detailed expectations. I
thought: we’ll see, anything is fine. It did
take a while for me to get used to living
in the inland. I had my own house near
the school, which hadn’t been lived in
for a long time, so it was in poor condi-
tion. Making it my own, with the scarce
means I had and help from the locals,
proved to be a challenge. But after two
days, I had adjusted to the local rhythm. I didn’t worry about
whether there was electricity or water. The people there didn’t ei-
ther. Only the bugs made my hair stand on end now and again.”
“From Monday till Friday, I worked at the elementary school in
the morning, and I was always busy afterwards as well. From pre-
paring next day’s lesson to doing my laundry in the Marowijne
River, and from chatting with villagers to dangling my feet in the
water. Contact with the locals was good, despite the language
barrier. I frequently needed the teachers to give instructions in
Paramaccan, after which we switched to Dutch, it always worked
out that way.”
“Kids will be kids, wherever they live. Structure, clarity and justice
are cornerstones. In addition, you have to exude respect, humour
and love, then everything will be all right. Be yourself, ask how
they are doing, and above all compliment them, that’s what ma-
kes them grow. This journey has left me feeling satisfied, because
I saw the children and teachers learning things from me, and I
got a sense that they appreciated my help and input. That’s why
I was taken in and valued. I had only wished to stay longer, to
experience this further and more intensely. I personally learned
not to keep dwelling on things that don’t work out or are not
(immediately) achievable. That I can be satisfied with the present,
and that I can also be happy with less comfort.” l

of volpension.
viteiten waaraan u kunt deelnemen. Bergendal – op nog geen

NIEUW CONCEPT MAAKT BERGENDAL RESORT NOG AANTREKKELIJKER
The well-known Eco & Cultural River
Resort Bergendal has stopped with
its all-inclusive concept.
Guests can now choose between bed & breakfast, half board or
full board. Instead of buffets, an a la carte menu is now served in
the Kiskadee Restaurant. This gives the guest more choice, and
the restaurant is also open for guests not staying at the resort.
Apart from changes to the restaurants, new activities have been
developed, such as jungle hikes, massage facilities and intimate
dining, for instance on the pier. The idea of the developed activi-
ties is to let people experience the Amazon in a pure and res-
pectful manner. With the changes, the management
aims to cater even better to the requirements
of the business and tourist markets.
In the beautiful surroundings along the
Suriname River, in the Brokopondo
district, you’ll find the gorgeous Ber-
gendal River Resort. The resort offers
a unique and comfortable combina-
tion of culture, nature and relaxation.
You can enjoy a swim, walk, or food,
and there are plenty of recreational ac-
tivities to participate in. Bergendal – just
60 miles from Paramaribo – is Brokopondo
at its best: beautiful trees, flowers, twittering birds
and a relaxing river. The resort has 44 lovely lodges with air
conditioning, hot and cold water, and an open terrace or balcony
with a great view on the surrounding nature.

doen.
zwembad”, aldus Dave Boucke.
gesteld. l SURINAME TRAVEL MAGAZINE 2015 19 EDITIE WINTER 2014 - 201518
GERENOVEERDE KAMERS ZIJN EEN GENOT OM IN TE
VERTOEVEN
A lot of work has been done lately, keeping inconvenience for the
guests to a minimum, to upgrade Torarica, which has maintained its
appeal and charm. The rooms have been adapted to the demands
of the guest who sets high standards when it comes to comfort and
luxury. The swimming pool has also received a major overhaul, and is
looking great.
Being an experienced hospitality manager, Dave Boucke noticed the
Torarica Hotel was ready for a thorough upgrade, in order to meet
the modern demands made by tourists and businesspeople for a ho-
tel. “Not that Torarica was becoming less popular with old and new
guests”, Dave Boucke assures, “Torarica is a household name in Su-
riname and has enormous
appeal, for over half a cen-
tury now. It happened in
Torarica, you met new and
old friends there, you went
dancing, attended a wedding reception or just had a drink, there was
always something to do. For many generations.” And that’s still the
case in 2015: Torarica has a charisma that makes other hotels jealous.
The newly renovated rooms are spacious and equipped with all mo-
dern comforts. The bathrooms in particular are a sight to behold. The
large beds guarantee an optimal night’s rest. All rooms have free Wi-
Fi internet. The air conditioning is wonderfully quiet, and ensures a
pleasant temperature in the room. The buffet breakfast is as before,
tasty and plentiful, with extremely friendly service and waiting staff.
The renovated terrace and swimming pools are eye catchers, and gre-
at places to hang out. European and tropical appearance meet here
in the perfect mixture. The swimming pool is attractively lit at night,
with efficient LED lighting that changes colours constantly. The swim-
ming pool has natural salt water filtration, so chemicals are no longer
needed to keep the water clean. The 4 cabanas on a platform are
nicely secluded, and come fully equipped. “You can rent the cabanas
per half day with a group, nice and romantic with your partner, or just
as a treat for yourself. Your newspaper is ready, the fridge is stocked,
and you have a great view of the swimming pool from your lounge set”,
Dave Boucke says.
Thanks to this upgrade, Torarica has secured its future as the leading
hotel of Paramaribo for the coming decades. l

Absoluut hoogtepunt was het driedaagse verblijf in het
binnenland.
hangmat, eigenlijk wil niemand zo’n paradijs vrijwillig verlaten.
Daar was in

Suriname is genieten.
The absolute highlight was the three-day stay in the inland. For
some, that was far too short. And there is something to be said
for that. As soon as you smell the jungle, a mystical connection
is forged. The sounds of birds and monkeys, the starry night sky,
bathing in the sula, relaxing in a hammock, nobody really wants
to leave such a paradise voluntarily.
Travelling in a group makes such moments extra pleasant. You can
share the fun with each other. That didn’t just apply to seasoned
explorers, such as biology and geography teachers. Their colleagues of
Education, Technology, Dutch and English visibly enjoyed this overdose
of Surinamese nature. Their pupils will undoubtedly get to hear their
stories often.
TEACHERS TRAVEL TO SURINAME
The average age of the group was around 45 years. Not the
youngest, but perhaps the most eager to learn. The latter is also
a natural characteristic of teachers. So the programme took that
into account.
Nevertheless, 12 days (effectively) aren’t enough to discover
the entire country. There is so much more in addition to the
plantation tour in Commewijne, the visit to the Jewish savannah,
the excursions to historical buildings in Paramaribo, the visit to the
National Assembly, the afternoon at Colakreek and the day trip
to Nickerie. Suriname offers an endless amount of possibilities
for the active tourist.
Naturally, Dutch teachers want to find out how things are in
Surinamese schools. That’s why a special day was reserved for
a visit to educational institutions: a high school, the institute for
the education of teachers (IOL) and the Unu Pikin foundation,
which commits itself to the distribution, restoration and recycling
of school materials. Useful contacts were also established, and
information exchanged.
For years now, the foundation Vriendschapsbanden Nederland
Suriname has been organizing trips on a non-profit base. The
profit goes to projects in Suriname. This time, the tour guides
took along 2 incubators, for small village communities. Without
additional transport costs, thanks to Surinam Airways!
In 2015, VNS is once again offering trips for teachers. Then it will
involve 2 separate groups of around 20 participants. That’s also
in the interest of the Surinamese hospitality industry. The small
Warung in Commewijne barely managed to survive the lunch
invasion of 32 hungry teachers from the Netherlands. l
Suriname is pure enjoyment. Even if it’s your first time there. The foundation Vriendschapsbanden
Nederland Suriname (VNS; Friendship Ties Netherlands Suriname) once again organized a trip to
Suriname. This time, 32 teachers went on a 14-day voyage of discovery through the country. The
ambiance was excellent, although most of the participants had only met each other at an information day.
And the enthusiasm increased every day. Perhaps that was also thanks to Suriname itself. The excursions,
the food, Surinam Airways’ hospitality, Eco Resort Inn: it was all one big party.

GEZONDHEID
In Suriname people speak Dutch, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that customs are the same as in Holland. It’s good to know what’s allowed and what you’d rather avoid.
GENERAL
• Being polite is important. Address people you don’t know very politely. • Many homes don’t have a doorbell; in those cases call out “klopklop” or rattle the gate. • When you visit someone at home, take off your shoes before you enter. • YoucanrentacarinSuriname,butbeawareofthesomewhatchaotictraffic,badroadsandthefactthatthereisleft-handtraffic.
HEALTH
• The sun is blazing in Suriname; therefore you must protect your head and your skin. Be-cause of the clouds and the wind it sometimes takes longer before you realize that you’re getting burnt. • Always check whether you have to take malaria tablets. Contact your local health au-thorities or the Bureau for Public Health Care (BOG) in Suriname. When you’re in a malaria invested area, it’s good advice to cover your skin especially in the evening, use a deet product and sleep under a mosquito net. If after your stay in a malaria area you get headaches and fever, please see your doctor immediately. • Are you using special medicines? Take a spare supply with you. There’s a chance that these medicines are not available in Suriname. • A number of international heath insurances are accepted when you’re admitted in one of the large hospitals in Suriname. Sometimes you have to pay cash for some procedures; upon your return in Holland you can ask for a reimbursement from your insurance company.
WATER
• Tap water is clean and tasty, but always verify if it’s really tap water. Not all households are connected to the water main, and rainwater could cause problems. • Always take a bottle of water with you when you’re going outside. In the tropics you lose moreliquidthanusual, soit’simportanttotakeinsufficientamountsofliquid.
FOOD
• Always say whether you’d like hot pepper (sambal) with your meal. Suriname people usually like spicy food. • Always wash vegetables and fruits before consumption and be careful when eating out. The high temperatures cause bacteria to multiply rapidly.
INTERIOR
• When you visit the interior, always take along swimming clothes, sun block, hat or cap, mosquito gel containing deet, pants and long-sleeved shirt, raincoat and aflashlight.• Store cameras and other articles that shouldn’t get wet inside a plastic bag before you step into a boat or go into the forest. • Souvenirs are for sale in all varieties and sizes. Before you buy, take into account what kind of goods may or may not be imported into the Netherlands. For instance, products made from tortoise shell, reptile skin or coral are not allowed. • Do you wish to photograph native people or their belongings? Thenaskthemfirst.Noteveryoneappreciatesitandsomecul-tures consider photography taboo.• When you are in a closed community, never venture out alone.Intheinteriorit’sthecustomtofirstreporttothelocalauthority.

In 2015, the Triskontakten foundation (the former
Military Forces in Suriname) in conjunction with
METS Travel & Tours, once again organizes a num-
ber of interesting Suriname trips in the month of No-

One of the highlights of the trip is undoubtedly a visit to the new TRIS mo-

commemorate the 45 Surinamese and Dutch soldiers who died during
their service in Suriname.
Each year, hundreds of former members of the Military Forces in Suri-

families, to visit places that are dear to them. A visit to the TRIS monu-

relaxen in rivier of hangmat.

Nassaugebergte zo’n twintig verschillende nieuwe diersoorten
Zie

Danpaati Rainforest River LodgeDanpaati River Lodge, situated on the small island of ‘Dan’, deep
within the inland at the Upper Suriname, is truly a dream destination.
Here, travellers can comfortably enjoy the jungle. The resort was
recently completely renovated, and now also has a swimming pool.
Waking up with riverside yoga, a cocktail at the edge of the pool in
the afternoon, and enjoying a delicious dinner at night – it’s all on
the programme here. To counterbalance all that relaxation, visitors
can also learn about the Saramaccan culture by visiting surrounding
villages. In short, enjoying the pristine jungle in complete luxury. And
for a good cause too. Because when you spend the night in Danpaati,
a contribution is made for the care of the local population. For more
information, see www.surinametravel.com
Jungle Resort PingpeThis small resort is also situated at the Upper Suriname river. Anyone
spending the night here, is also directly involved with the life of the
Saramaccans, which largely takes place on the river. The authentic way
of life has been preserved well, thanks to the remote location. People
here live almost exactly the same as one hundred years ago. Besides
tours with accommodation at this resort, the adventurous traveller can
also combine this trip with overnight stays in the heart of the jungle, in
a hammock camp. This is combined with a hike of around four hours
through the pristine jungle. The camp is an ideal spot for fishing, to
learn more about medicinal plants and herbs straight from the forest,
or just to relax in river or hammock. An adventurous trip, possibly
having the Anjumara you caught on the menu at night, sleeping with
the sounds of the jungle in the background. Just a moment away from
the inhabited world, surrounded by nature. For more information, see

of jungle lodges with a view on the river, a group accommodation,
and a hammock camp for the adventurers. At the end of the day,
it’s lovely to enjoy a cold drink while watching the sunset from the
platform at the river. These surroundings are relatively unknown from
a tourist perspective, but definitely worthwhile. The area is not densely
populated, the river is wide, the rapids raging, and the jungle is largely
pristine. During an expedition in 2011, scientists discovered around
twenty new animal species at the Nassau Mountains, including the
fluorescent purple Atelopus frog. During your stay, you can go on
impressive boat rides through raging rapids, walk through the jungle,
and get to know the local culture in the Paramaccan village of Loka
Loka. The highlight of the tour is the intense hike to the Mina Falls,
where you can cool down after two hours of working up a sweat. For

www.tembeartstudio.com.
Tijdelijk shops waar
nu haar eigen pop-up store. The Fashion House opent haar deuren
www.kotomuseum.org.
Moengo: modern art in the woodsIt used to be a hospital, but now the building is completely devoted
to modern art. If you want to enjoy not only nature and culture in the
Marowijne, but artistic works as well, the Tembe Art Studio in Moengo is the
place to go. Initiator is Surinamese artist Marcel Pinas, who wants to support
the community’s creativity, particularly of the young artists in Marowijne.
Apart from exhibitions by local artists, the Art Studio also hosts trainings
by Surinamese and international artists. The studio has a guest workshop,
where artists from Suriname, the Netherlands, the United States and the
Caribbean temporarily reside. These artists in residency produce fine arts
for Moengo and the surrounding area, thus contributing to the training
programme. Pinas’ efforts haven’t gone unnoticed: he was one of the first
artists ever to be crowned Young Global Leader by the World Economic
Forum in Geneva. See also www.tembeartstudio.com.
Suriname’s first pop-up storeIn fashion capitals like London, Milan and Paris, they are appearing
everywhere: the pop-up stores. Temporary shops where fashionistas can
indulge, scoring trendy outfits from great brands. After a week, or even a
few days, the store is gone again, so it’s vital to be there fast. Good news
for fashionable ladies in Suriname: Paramaribo now has its own pop-up
store. The Fashion House opens its doors several times a year in various
secret locations in the city. Every edition has its own selection of designers,
with products ranging from clothing and jewellery to bags and shoes.
Where and when the next Fashion House takes place, is announced
shortly beforehand through the Facebook page of the same name.
The art of the kotoColourful, traditional and inventive. The koto, the Surinamese Creole traditional
dress, has a rich history. The first kotos were worn during the slavery era,
with the angisa, the folded headdress, acting as a means of communication.
By wearing the angisa in a certain fashion, slaves were able to convey
messages to each other. The way in which the koto itself was worn, could
also signify a message. It’s a special art, passed on orally from generation to
generation. The koto is actually still worn, on special occasions like birthdays,
weddings and funerals. For everyone who wants to know more about this
extraordinary traditional dress and its history, the Koto Museum opened its
doors in Paramaribo. Collecting all the kotos and angisas, the oldest of which
dating back to 1889, took ten years. The result is a collection with great
historical value. For more information and opening hours, see the museum’s
website: www.kotomuseum.org.
In tune with natureEspecially for the yoga weekends, the Danpaati River Lodge has built a
beautiful wooden platform, which is used as a yoga deck. Here, depending
on the instructors, various types of yoga are practiced. Various relaxation
exercises and meditation sessions are also practiced in unusual places; on
the rocks, for instance, which stay lovely and warm after sunset. In short, with
the meditation, breathing, yoga, stretching and relaxation exercises, you will
be completely in tune with the beautiful nature of the Surinamese rainforest.
Health & CultureDuring the 3-day yoga weekend, not only do you get acquainted with the
different types of yoga, you also discover the beauty and culture of the
Surinamese rainforest. During the last evening, you will meet the local
population, who will show you how to relax in a completely different way,
with dancing and music. To achieve complete balance, extra attention is
given to the food during the yoga weekends. Drink delicious smoothies, and
