Last week’s baseball game between No. 5 Ray and No. 10 Hayden in Kearny was ended early due to a melee between players on both teams that resulted in each team taking a loss. The fracas allegedly started when a Hayden pitcher hit the same Ray batter during multiple plate appearances. Later, the Hayden pitcher reached first base, where the Ray batter was positioned defensively, words were exchanged and the two began chest-bumping before things escalated further. A Ray infielder ran over to try to separate the players, but instead he was tackled and pinned to ground, where he was assaulted. Players from both teams joined the incident before umpires called the game. The Ray infielder suffered several facial abrasions, a busted lip and a concussion. Several players on both teams were suspended for one game. The teams met again on Monday, Apr. 15, with the Bearcats narrowly defeating the Lobos, 10 – 9.Ray up next: Apr. 19 vs. Round Valley at 1 p.m. and Apr. 23 at Duncan at 4 p.m.Hayden up next: Apr. 18 vs. Ft. Police officers across the country deal with many aspects of crime. But it’s not just investigating and arresting criminals. They are often called upon to work with the victims of crimes, people who are often having the worst day of their lives. Officers have to be compassionate and caring. Rural officers even more so since they often know the victims, who may be friends or neighbors. On Tuesday, April 9, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office hosted the third annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Night and honored local law enforcement officers for their outstanding service to victims of crimes. Three officers from the Copper Corridor were among those honored. Superior Police Chief Christian Ensley was honored to present the award to Officer Tyler Hall. Officer Hall has always gone above and beyond his call of duty for the citizens of Superior. The department is proud and honored to have him a part of the Superior Police Department family.

Kearny Police Officer Anthony Clubb was also honored. Attending with Officer Clubb were Chief of Police Wallace Kenney, Mayor Debra Sommers and Town Manager Anna Flores. Mammoth Police Department’s Sergeant Michael Green was recognized and presented the award. While not local, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Detective Randy Snyder was recognized at the event. He does child crimes, mostly those involving online predators. Detective Snyder has been assigned to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Bureau since 2010 where he was initially detailed to the Persons Crimes Unit. In 2014, he was selected and transferred to the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, where he remains assigned today primarily serving child victims within Pinal County. We thank all our officers for their dedication to the community and for their continual support of victims of crimes.
