Nestled in the hills of Austria sits Gug-ging, an artists’ colony with a difference where the worlds of psy-chiatry and art collide — with spectacular success.
Over the past 50 years, mentally ill patients here have churned out an astounding 75,000 recognised artworks, some selling for over €100,000 ($110,000).
In particular, it is a wellspring for “Art Brut”, producing some of the giants in the popular genre like August Walla, Oswald Tschirtner and Johann Hauser.
“Raw art” or “outsider art”, as it is known in English, is art by those untrained in — and
untainted by —artistic conventions. To the Frenchman who coined the term, Jean
Dubuffet (1901-1985), it is found in the works of “primitive societies”, of children — and of the mentally ill.
Until July 2, Dubuffet’s sensation-causing 1949 “L’Art Brut” exhibition in Paris that started it all is being staged again at the Gugging Museum.
Featured are works by those Dubuffet met while scouring Europe’s care homes for people with mental illnesses, like Adolf Woelfli, a Swiss suffering from psychosis and hallucinations.
Others include schizophrenic Aloise Corbaz
who would use, at first in secret, juice from pet-als and toothpaste to create colourful and fantastical images, often of lovers.
“Up until then (1949), what they produced was seen, at best, as a kind of curiosity, certainly not as works of art,” Johann Feilacher, director of the Gugging Art Brut Centre, said. The early history of the Gugging psychiatric hospital, in the forested hills north of Vienna, is dark. Dur-ing World War II, hundreds of its patients were killed. In the 1950s though, its new director, Leo Navratil, began to diagnose his patients by get-ting them to draw.

Amazed by the results, Navra-til began a correspondence with Dubuffet and as the output of its patients grew, so did Gugging’s fame as a citadel for art brut.
In 1981, Navratil founded at Gugging an art and psychotherapy centre, later renamed the House of Artists.
A commercial gallery and museum followed, drawing a grow-ing stream of visitors. One was David Bowie, who bought several works for his art collection.
The psychiatric clinic itself closed around a decade ago, but the artists’ colony remains.
“For us, the residents are first
and foremost artists with special needs, not patients,” said Feilacher, who took over from Navratil in 1986.
Walla, Tschirtner and Hauser are dead now but half a dozen Gug-ging artists still generate works today bought by galleries and col-lectors the world over.
They include Franz Kernbeis, who, when first admitted in 1955, would remain immobile for hours, Karl Vondal, who specialises in erotic works, and Johann Garber.
“Along with the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland (California), Gugging is one of the rare places in the world to have produced so many great artists,” said Sarah Lombardi, director of the Art Brut Collection in Lausanne, Switzerland, home to Dubuffet’s legacy.
The artists split the proceeds from sales 50:50 with the gallery, in which they are also shareholders.
Garber, whose busy surrealis-tic designs adorn Gugging’s walls and whose technicolour ear
sculpture is a Vienna landmark, also has an exhibition on.
“I am an artist and a genius,” Garber said. “It is beautiful to draw and paint. We are happy that we have a place where we can live and draw.”
Just being part of Gugging is no guarantee of success, however.
Not all of the 15 residents pro-duce work “particular enough to be recognised artworks,” said Feilacher. “Some of them develop late, some of them never.”

Seventy percent of digital blood pressure monitors used at homes are “unacceptably
inaccurate”, and could cause seri-ous implications for people who rely on them, said researchers one of Indian-origin.
The study found that about 70 percent of the time, these digital devices weren’t accurate within five mmHg, when compared to the mercury reading of the sphyg-momanometer (used by medical practitioners) leading to flaws in making informed health decisions. The devices were off the mark by 10 mmHg about 30 percent of the time.
The findings are extremely rel-evant given millions of patients are asked to monitor their blood pres-sure through a device at home and report the results back to their doc-tor, researchers said.
Further, the readings were more inaccurate in men than in
women. According to researchers, there are many factors that could account for their findings.
“Arm shape, arm size, the stiff-ness and age of blood vessels, and the type of blood pressure cuff are not always taken into account when a blood pressure machine is designed and validated,” said Raj Padwal, a professor at University
of Alberta, Canada.“Individual differences, such as
the size, age and medical back-ground of the person using the blood pressure monitor are also contributing factors,” Padwal added.
For the study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, the team tested 85 patients with home monitors. They noted that
steps can be taken to minimise inaccurate readings.
Patients should not start or change drugs based on one or two measurements taken at a single point in time unless the measure-ments are clearly elevated.
Patients should also compare the blood pressure machine meas-urement with a blood pressure measurement in clinic before exclu-sively relying upon home blood pressure readings. What’s really important is to do several blood pressure measurements and base treatment decisions on multiple readings, the researchers advised.
“High blood pressure is the number one cause of death and dis-ability in the world,” said lead researcher Jennifer Ringrose, from the University of Alberta. “Monitor-ing for and treating hypertension can decrease the consequences of this disease. We need to make sure that home blood pressure readings are accurate,” she added.
People who consumed more than one serving per day of skim and low-
fat milk, had a 39 percent greater chance of developing Parkinson’s compared to those who consumed less than one serving per week, according to a study.
The findings, published in the journal Neurology, showed that for people who consumed at least three servings of low-fat dairy a day had a 34 percent greater chance of developing Parkinson’s than people who consumed less than one serv-ing per day.
Eating sherbet or frozen yogurt also was linked to a modest increased risk.
“The results provide evi-dence of a modest increased risk of Parkinson’s with greater consumption of low-fat dairy products. Such dairy products,
which are widely consumed, could potentially be a modifi-able risk factor for the disease,” said Katherine C Hughes, from the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health in Boston.
For the study, the team analysed approximately 25 years of data on 80,736 women and 48,610 men. Participants in these studies completed health questionnaires every two years and diet questionnaires every four years. During that time, 1,036 people developed Parkinson’s.
In a meta-analysis, look-ing at a group of studies, the researchers found that total dairy intake was associated with an increased risk of Par-kinson’s disease. However, more research is needed before recommendations can be made about dairy consump-tion, the researchers said.
Dark red onions, known as the richest source of dietary flavo-noids, may help fight off cancer
of the colon and breast, a researchers has suggested. “We found that onions are excellent at killing cancer cells,” said Abdulmonem Murayyan, doctoral student at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.
“Onions activate pathways that encourage cancer cells to undergo cell death. They promote an unfavoura-ble environment for cancer cells and disrupt communication between can-cer cells, which inhibits growth,” Murayyan added.
The findings, published recently in the journal Food Research Interna-tional, revealed that red onions contain high levels of quercetin — a plant polyphenol from the flavonoid group, found in many fruits, vegeta-bles, leaves, and grains — and include
benefits such as lowering inflamma-tion and fighting allergies, among others.
Further, red onions were also found to have high amounts of anthocyanin, which enriches the scav-enging properties of quercetin molecules. “Anthocyanin is instru-mental in providing colour to fruits and vegetables so it makes sense that the red onions, which are darkest in colour, would have the most cancer-fighting power,” said Murayyan.
In the first study, to examine how effective onions are at killing cancer cells, researchers have found that not all onions are created equal. The team tested five onion types grown in Ontario and discovered that the Ruby Ring onion variety — that has hard, firm, tall globe-shaped bulbs with dark red colour features — came out on top.

With foie gras and oil-packed tuna in the mix, these surf-and-turf dev-
iled eggs are deliciously over-the-top.
Make Ahead: The eggs can be hard-cooked up to 1 week in advance; refrigerate in an airtight container and let the egg white halves come to a cool room tem-perature before serving. The filling needs to be refrigerated for 1 hour before serving.
4 to 6 servings (makes 24 halves)
Ingredients12 hard-cooked eggs1/2 cup mayonnaise1 tablespoon Dijon-style
mustardFine sea salt2 teaspoons black truffle sauce
(optional)4 ounces good-quality tuna
packed in olive oil, drained and crumbled
3 tablespoons minced chives, plus more minced or cut chives for garnish
2 ounces canned foie gras ter-rine, at room temperature
StepsCut the eggs in half lengthwise.
Separate the whites and yolks and make sure the egg white halves have no trace of cooked yolks; hold the whites in a bowl of cool water until ready to use. (You may wish to slice a thin layer off the bottoms of each one, for stability.)
Place the yolks in a food proc-essor, along with the mayo, mustard and a pinch of salt. Puree until smooth. Add the black truffle sauce, if using, and pulse to incorporate.
Transfer the mixture to a mix-ing bowl. Fold in the tuna and
chives. Use a fork to mash the foie gras in a separate bowl, then add to the egg yolk mixture, stirring until it is lump-free. Taste and add more salt, as needed.
Spoon the filling into a piping bag or gallon-size zip-top bag. Seal and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Drain and pat the egg white halves dry. Pipe some filling into each one, then garnish with minced chives.

The next time you’re looking for a sweet end to a Middle East-ern-inspired meal, try a
no-bake dessert. A pair of small helper’s hands can stuff walnut pieces into tender pitted dates — which form the cake’s base — while you stir up a roux until it’s the color of toasty caramel.
The roux, aromatic spices and finally a crumbly blanket of pista-chios go on top; once they’re set, the cake’s ready to go.
TIP: The freshness of the wal-nuts is key here.
18 to 24 servingsA soft pitted date works best for
this recipe; in testing, we used the deglet noor variety, available at Trader Joe’s stores.
Make Ahead: The cake needs an hour or two to set up before serving. It can be covered and stored at room temperature for up to 4 days.
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
3 packed cups pitted dates, pref-erably deglet noor (about 1 pound)
1 cup safflower oil (may substi-tute 16 tablespoons unsalted butter or ghee)
2 cups flour3 tablespoons confectioners’
sugar1 teaspoon ground cinnamon2 teaspoons ground
cardamom1 cup shelled, coarsely ground
raw pistachiosToast the walnuts in a large non-
stick skillet over medium heat for about 5 minutes, shaking the pan so they don’t scorch, until the nuts are fragrant and lightly browned. Let cool.
Line the bottom of a 10-inch tart pan with a removable bottom or a springform pan with parchment paper.
Use the walnuts to stuff each date, arranging them in the pan in a single layer as you work; this will take 15 to 20 minutes, and it should be easy to do because the dates have been split.
Heat the oil in the same skillet you used to toast the walnuts, over medium heat. Gradually add the flour, whisking constantly, to form a smooth and thick roux. Cook for
15 to 20 minutes, whisking all the while, until the roux is a light mocha color; it picks up color especially in the last 5 minutes of cooking. Turn off the heat and stir in the sugar, until it has dissolved.
Carefully transfer the roux (it’s molten hot!) to the pan; use an off-set spatula or table knife to smooth it evenly over the dates, making sure they are completely covered. Imme-diately sprinkle the cinnamon and cardamom evenly over the roux, then top with the pistachios, to cover completely.
Let the date cake sit for at least an hour or two before serving.
When ready to serve, remove the ring from the pan. Cut the cake into 18 to 24 squares or diamond shapes (edges and bits left over are for the cook).

Katrina is a machine of superhit films: RanbirActor Ranbir Kapoor says his “Jagga
Jasoos” co-star Katrina Kaif is a big star, who delivers superhit films
time and again. He would even like to make a film “only for her” in the future as a producer.
“I think Katrina is a machine of super-hit films. In the future, when I will produce a film, I would like to make a film only for her,” Ranbir, who was present at the song launch of the film along with its director Anurag Basu, told media here on Friday.
Katrina, who was sitting next to him, smiled and said: “Thank you very much.” The actors have also shared screen space in films “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” and “Raajneeti”. Ranbir, who is currently busy shooting for a biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt — directed by Rajkumar Hirani
— feels safe and blessed to have a wide range of films in the pipeline. “Last few years weren’t that good at the box office, but even then I’ve got the opportunity to work with Raju sir, Anurag Basu and Ayan Mukerji. I feel very fortunate and blessed. “They are putting their vision in a film and gifting it to me. So, I really hope that I can repay that with my tal-ent,” said Ranbir, whose films like “Bombay Velvet” and “Roy” bombed at the box office.
‘Bank Chor’ to release with U/A certificate
“Bank Chor” has passed the censor test with a U/A certificate, with minor audio dubs and without any visual cuts. With actors Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Anand Oberoi in lead roles, it is
the story of three men who choose the worst day possible to rob a bank. The three ‘chors’ -- Champak, Genda and Gulab -- are simpletons and their banter has no adult humour, read a statement from Y-Films. The team wanted the film to appeal to family audiences. “Throughout the making of the film, we kept family audiences in mind and we are so glad that the film has got a rating that will attract all kinds of people to the theatres on June 16,” said Riteish.
Imtiaz Ali’s next movie “Jab Harry Met Sejal” — starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka
Sharma — has now been set for release on August 4, averting a box office clash with Akshay Kumar’s “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha”, confirmed the film’s posters.
After months of speculation, it was officially revealed by Shah Rukh, Anushka and Imtiaz through their social media handles that the movie is titled “Jab Harry Met Sejal” — an obvious take on the Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Inter-estingly, the title is also reminiscent of Imtiaz’s super-hit movie “Jab We Met”.
Commenting on the film’s title, Shah Rukh tweeted: “Just in case Ranbir Kapoor ever claims it... The title ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ was never ever sug-gested by him! So he doesn’t win the Rs5,000 reward.” The film’s posters were splashed across dailies on Friday.
The romantic drama, widely shot in Prague, Amsterdam, Lis-bon and Budapest, marks the third time that Shah Rukh and Anushka have been paired after “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” and “Jab Tak Hai
Jaan”. The first glimpses reflect a
positive vibe with Shah Rukh and Anushka portrayed at their jovial best. Taking this positivity for-ward, Shah Rukh, who is also presenting the movie under his Red Chillies Entertainments ban-ner, decided it would be best for the films to release a week apart, the sources close to the film said.
“Seeking your love,” Imtiaz posted for fans on Facebook, alongside the film’s first two looks which carry the tagline -- “What you seek is seeking you”.
As a date, August 4 will allow “Jab Harry Met Sejal” to cash in on a long weekend given that Rakshabandhan falls on August 7 — a Monday — this year. There will also be an Independence Day holiday in the subsequent week.
Actress Richa Chadha, who is known for portraying bold characters in films like
“Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Masaan”, says that women are trolled all the time irrespective of the time and situation.
“Dangal” famed actress Fatima Sana Shaikh has been shamed for posting a picture of herself in a bikini in the month of Ramadan on her social networking site.
When asked about this contro-versy, Richa said: “I am not aware of this controversy but I feel, if she was an athlete or swimmer and if she would have had posted her pic-ture, then also people would have
shown problem with it.”“Women are trolled all the time,
it is not because it’s a holy month of Ramadan or anything. Even on any other normal day if she would have put picture like this, then also there would have been horrible comments.”
Richa was present at the launch of A kreations Hair and Beyond salon in Mumbai on Friday. She also said that “People can only comment on things, so it shouldn’t matter much.” “I don’t think it is something to be discussed also and media peo-ple should also be aware of that,” said the actress.
When Richa was asked about
the importance of looking present-able and good, she said: “As an actor, it is important because it is visual medium and people look at your beauty, hair and fashion.”
“I try to be as natural as possible and on regular days, I don’t wear makeup...,” added Richa.
Her next projects include “Fukrey Returns” and talking about that, she said: The shoot of the film is complete. It is in editing stage and it will release in December.”
“Fukrey Returns” is directed by Mrighdep Singh Lamba. It also stars Pulkit Samrat, Ali Fazal, Varun Sharma,Vishakha Singh and Priya Anand.

More than 40 years ago, Americans
were afraid to go into the water as “Jaws” scared the daylights out of a generation of ocean swimmers. Hollywood is hoping for a repeat this sum-mer with the movie
“47 Meters Down.”There have been
more than 50 shark movies since Steven Spielberg made cin-ematic history with
“Jaws” in 1975. This year’s shark movie, which will open in the US on June 16, takes place almost entirely under water.
Sisters Lisa and Kate — played by Mandy Moore and Claire Holt — are on vacation in the Gulf of California, and it becomes clear that they should avoid climbing aboard a flimsy boat belonging to Taylor (Matthew Modine).
They also probably should not get inside Taylor’s rusty shark cage to plunge into the water and observe the predators up close. Modine’s character attracts the sharks by pouring blood into the water — before the cage breaks away from the boat and drops to the ocean floor.
The two young women with little diving experience find them-selves in the dark with less than an hour of air in their oxygen tanks — surrounded, of course, by hungry sharks. “What I found far more terrifying is the prospect and premise of drowning, of running out of air,” Moore told reporters.
“That’s my biggest fear. That’s far more terrifying than sharks,
which are terrifying enough.”Director Johannes Roberts
decided that once the women plunged into the ocean there was no need for scenes on the surface.
“I had no interest in going back to reaction shots with Taylor and the other boys on the boat,” he said.
“Imagine if in ‘Gravity,’ you kept cut-ting to ground control. It would have killed the movie,” he said, referring to the 2013 Oscar-win-ning film about astronauts stranded in space.
For the film, Moore and Holt therefore spent eight hours a day for eight weeks inside a six-meter deep water tank. “47 Meters Down” was filmed mainly in sun-deprived Britain, far from Mexico’s bright Pacific coast. A few scenes were made in the Dominican Republic.
“We didn’t realize how
physically taxing it was going to be, all that time under water,” Moore said. “In that sense we were kind of Guinea pigs because no one knew what effect eight weeks everyday under water would have.” An especially large diving mask was designed so viewers could better see Moore and Holt’s facial reactions.
T h e actresses could communicate via a special radio set, but communication with the rest of the film crew was via hand signs, while the d i r e c t o r ’ s
instructions were delivered through a speaker inside the water tank. “I was pretty nervous,” said Holt. “But we had great people taking care of us.”
Last year, just 81 unprovoked shark attacks were reported world-wide, according to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF). None were reported in Mexico. “We have a bet-ter chance of getting hit by lightning or eaten by a hippo than attacked by a shark,” said Modine, who has been diving since he was a teenager.
The chances of being attacked by a shark are nearly one in four million, according to the Interna-tional Wildlife Museum based in Tucson, Arizona. And yet, a large mouthful of sharp teeth and fear of the deep sea add up to shark bait for Hollywood producers.
Jennifer Lopez has a ladderin her closet
American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez has a ladder in her wardrobe,
so she can reach her vast array of clothes.
The chart-topping singer has such an expansive collection of clothes, she requires a “Beauty and the Beast”-style ladder to be able to reach them from the shelves, according to dancer Derek Hough, reports female-first.co.ukk Hough said: “There’s actually a ladder in her closet. And I don’t mean just a little step-ping ladder like in a pantry, oh I’m talking like, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘tale as old as closet.’”
Hough has starred alongside the 47-year-old beauty on their NBC competition show, “World of Dance”. And he’s admitted to relishing the experience of work-ing alongside the seemingly ageless entertainer, describing her as the “queen bee” of the show’s cast.
‘Aladdin’ director keen to cast Tom Hardy
Actor Tom Hardy is report-edly being approached for the role of Jafar in the
live-action remake of “Aladdin”. The 39-year-old actor could be part of the project after the project’s director Guy Ritchie reached out to him, reports femalefirst.co.uk. A source told The Sun newspaper: “Guy is a huge fan of Tom’s work and securing him would be a major coup. There have been conver-sations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are sub-ject to change, he’s certainly one of Guy’s favoured choices.”
Ritchie may secure the “Mad Max” star, but he may be forced to come up with a back-up plan as Hardy’s schedule might not allow it. Meanwhile, Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall is in talks to play Princess Jasmine.

TECHNOLOGY SUNDAY 11 JUNE 201712
Facebook planssecret tracking via webcam
Social media giant Facebook is planning to secretly watch and record users through their webcams and smartphone
cameras.“According to a newly discovered patent,
the company will use technology to see how facial expressions of users change when they come across different types of content on the site,” Independent.co.uk reported.
The patent document also suggests that the company would also analyse those images to see how users feel and later use that infor-mation to keep users on the site for longer.
For example, if you smiled looking at one of your friends pictures, Facebook’s algorithm would use that information and display more pictures of that friend in your News Feed.
“Another example included in the patent application explains that if you looked away from your screen when a video of a kitten played, Facebook would stop showing simi-lar type of videos in your Feed,” the report noted. However, Facebook has not put these plans into action yet, and there’s no guaran-tee that it ever would in future.
In a first, scientists have discov-ered that magnetic properties can exist even in the two dimen-
sional (2-D) realm of mono-layers, or materials that are formed by a single atomic layer.
The study proved that material chromium tri-chloride has mag-netic properties in the mono-layer form, which may open up a world of potential applications possibly in the information technology industry. “What we have discov-ered here is an isolated 2-D material with intrinsic magnet-ism, and the magnetism in the system is highly robust,” said Xiaodong Xu, Professor at the Uni-versity of Washington.
“We envision that new informa-tion technologies may emerge based on these new 2-D magnets,” Xu added, in the paper published in the journal Nature.
Atoms within mono-layer mate-rials are considered “functionally” two-dimensional because the elec-trons can only travel within the atomic sheet, like pieces on a chessboard.
To discover the properties of the material in its 2-D form, the team
used Scotch tape to shave a mono-layer off the larger, three dimensional (3-D) crystal form.
Surprisingly, in chromium tri-chloride flakes that are two layers thick, an optical signature demon-strating the magnetic nature disappeared. This signature returns
in a three layered structure. The scientists will need to con-
duct further studies to understand why the material displayed these remarkable layer-dependent mag-netic phases. But to Xu, these are just some of the truly unique prop-erties revealed by combining mono-layers.
“2-D mono-layers alone offer exciting opportunities to study the drastic and precise electrical con-trol of magnetic properties, which has been a challenge to realise using their 3-D bulk crystals,” Xu mentioned.
“But an even greater opportu-nity can arise when you stack mono-layers with different physi-cal properties together. There, you can get even more exotic phenom-ena not seen in the mono-layer alone or in the 3-D bulk crystal,” he said.
Microsoft has released a new test ver-sion of Windows 10 that introduces new user interface (UI) for “Start” and
“Action Center” features. The new build number “16215” includes
elements of the new “Fluent Design System”. “Fluent Design” is a revamp of “Microsoft Design Language 2” that includes guidelines for the designs and interactions used within software designed for all Windows 10 devices and platforms. The new build is open for developers and members of ‘Windows Insider’ programme for testing before market release.
“Action Center” has been redesigned to provide much clearer information separa-tion, hierarchy and also groups notifications together in a more coherent way from devices and apps.
“We heard your feedback, and in this build, you can now pin a website to the taskbar from Microsoft Edge. We will use the site’s icon to give you quick access to your favourite sites right from the taskbar. Simply select ‘Pin this page to the taskbar’ from the settings menu in Microsoft Edge,” said Dona Sarkar,
Software Engineer, Windows and Devices Group, Microsoft, in a blog post. In the new build, with your permission, personal assi-tant Cortana will now prompt you to create a reminder after noticing event posters in camera roll.
The company has also added a new “lasso” tool to circle the relevant information and Cortana will recognise the time and offer sug-gested follow-ups through a context menu.
