Change is going to make things happen.

And new Ravenswood Red Devil head coach Mick Price says that his players may now see him in a differ-ent light, even though he has

coached many of them in middle school and watched them progress in school and in other sports.

Yet Price has retained Will

Burgess, Jason Jackson and Steve Sturm on his staff who have coached over 15 years together under now retired predecessor Dick Sturm.

“That’s added to the soli-darity,” said Price, “and that was important to me to have people these kids were familiar with. I couldn’t

be more pleased with Will (offensive/defensive line), Steve (now offensive coor-dinator) and Jason (defen-

Steve has coached theses kids with me at the middle school level, and Joe knows them through his sons (Jonas, Rhys and Connor). He ‘s a well known guy and probably ‘the’ guy in football to come out of Ravenswood. So while there have been some new things happen, there has also been solidarity and that’s been good for the kids and im-portant to me.”

Junior Heath Burgess (5-9, 152, So.) will be the starting quarterback.

“What a quality kid,” Price said. “A great kid. A coach’s kid which can make a differ-ence, and a kid whose grown up on the sideline of Red Devil football.

“Now it’s his time to shine. He’s gotten bigger and stronger. He’s done a very good job in camp of working on what he needs to do to make this team successful. I’m excited to see his growth during the season and for him to step up as a junior and take his turn to lead. I’ve been real pleased with Heath. You’re not gonna hear a lot out

of Heath because he just doesn’t say a lot, but he sure is one of those kids who will let his play on the eld do his talking.”

The Red Devils will rely on four horsemen in the of-fensive back eld— Devon Crews (5-9, 192, Jr.), Rhys Jelich (5-9, 191, So.), Con-nor Jelich (5-9, 202. So.) and Ben Johnson (5-9, 166, So.).

“With Crews, Rhys and Connor Jelich and Ben John-son, we have four guys who we believe it won’t matter who has the ball. Any of the four could take it the house on any play,” Price said.

“We’ve got four guys who are willing to sacri ce and block for each other. They care about the team and they’re gonna do whatever it takes for our team to be suc-cessful. If one has to have 15 totes on a given night be-cause that’s what’s working, I don’t think you’re going to see jealousy out of these guys because they know that’s what’s best for the team. They’ve all worked together and they’re all pretty good friends. They’re willing to do what’s best for the team, and that’s a plus for any coach. These guys can and will all play run-ning back and wide receiver. With kids like them, we can

go to a spread set or a tight set in a hurry. That’s gonna be a real plus.”

Price said his team is try-ing to mix it up offensively in 2012. “We’re not just a spread team. We’ve tried to do a lot more to be diversi- ed,” he said. “The more you can diversify, the tough-er it will be on an opponent. We don’t want people to be able to say okay they did this last week. We may not even do the same thing.

“A lot of the credit for that goes to Steve Sturm. He and I sat down way back before school ended last year and the coaching positions were settled, and tried to come with an offensive scheme that number one would t the skills of the kids who would be playing, number two something that was simple to put in and num-ber three it was something would could call or change at any time during a game. That credit goes to Steve. He’s done a great job of not only getting the kids to know that system, but to feel comfortable in that system so we can do anything.”

“We’ve worked hard to fill key losses from last year’s offensive line,” Price said. “Senior captain Brad Titus (6-0, 221) will anchor the line at center. Willie Parsons, Ryan Whytsell (6-1, 229, Sr.), Trey Hatcher (6-0, 252, So.), Matt Peery (5-9, 209, So.), Matt Starch-er (5-8, 200. So.), Dillon Gandee, Kyle Hickman (5-10, 274, So.), Logan Tut-tle (6-4, 222, Jr.) and Billy Knicely (6-1, 314, Sr.) have all worked hard. We can go with a bigger, power group or something different. In Matt Peery is a kid who can play any position—snap, guard, tackle. We plan to use a multitude of kids and be able to given them breaks since several of them will be going both ways.”

Patrick Watson (5-10. 172, Sr.), Thomas Sturm (5-8, 144, So.) and Drake Mc-Dowell (5-8, 132, Sr.) will

DIVERSITYget playing time at split end/wide receiver. Dylan Rada-baugh (6-2, 174, So.), John Huey (5-10. 181, Sr.) and Nathan Cunningham (5-9, 178, Jr.) will play at tight end. They can all play wide receiver in spread sets.

“We’re tried to be very di-versi ed in anything we do offensively with this group of kids,” Price said.

“Defensively, again, you’ll see a lot of things from us,” he added. “You won’t just see a 4-3 or a 3-5, a 50 or whatever. You’ll see a lot of things. Coach Jackson was worked very hard with this group of kids, making sure they will be able to be diversi ed, so during a game we can change in a heartbeat to address what opponents are doing. In the past, his defensive units have been really good.

“Jason has done a very good job of getting these guys to buy into his system, and to be able to change that system to counter what opponents try to do offen-sively. That’s more diversity than we’ve had in the past, too.

“I’ve talked about the di-versity of this team. It’s important offensively that we do whatever we need to do to be successful and de-fensively that can do what-ever we need to do to limit our opponents’ possessions. The coaches have worked really hard and the kids have stepped up and met their expectations.”

Likewise, Price said the kick game is an ongoing process.

“Trey Hatcher, Nathan Cunningham and Mason Carte (5-8, 162, Sr.) have been punting, and Mason Carte, Preston Humphreys (5-6, 164, Fr.) and Nathan Cunningham have been place-kicking and kicking off,” Price said. “Whoever is doing the best job in a particular week will kick, but we will watch that and change to what’s best for the team in a given week. The kicking game is extremely important in high school football. Field position is everything. It’s something

that will be huge for us this year.”

Ravenswood will face a challenging, beefed up schedule in 2012 includ-ing defending State AA Champion Wayne and State Class AA Runner-Up Wil-liamstown.

“I told the kids this,” said Price. “If there’s any-body who is competitively great, they would love our schedule. We’re going to play some of the best team around.

had in years with Wayne, Williamstown, Braxton, Pt. Pleasant and Ripley. But we’ll have to take care of business on the road, too. It won’t be an easy task at all. It’s a very formidable schedule. But it’s one of those schedules where if we can get right and make some things happen, it can be very advantageous to us.

“I’ve always though if this team can get to the playoffs this year, which is one of our goals, they’re going to be battled-tested. They will have played some of the best team around. If you can get into the playoffs, with this schedule you’re not going to play anyone tougher than the teams you’ve already played.”

Personally, Price says he’s having a blast as the new head football coach.

“I love it. It’s been great,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed the association with the coach-es. They’re working hard. The kids are working hard. I’m enjoying it, and I’m going to enjoy it. There are ups and down in every day, every week, but that’s just part of athletics. But man, I love it, everything from day one of redoing the dressing rooms, the coaches’ of ce, the outside, trying to get the eld the best it can be to, preparing for these kids on an everyday basis, coming in to challenge the kids on an every day basis to put them in a position to be success-ful. It’s a great challenge, and I’ve always been one who loves challenges. This is no exception.

“I do not take my posi-tion as head football coach lightly. I understand that the tradition of football at Ravenswood is second to no program in West Virginia. I understand that as the guard-ian of this program, one of my responsibilities is to have my team as competi-tive as we can be on a night in, night out basis and be as successful as we can be. Our goal is to make the playoffs, play on Wheeling Island and win a state championship. That’s not just said; that’s something we expect.”

Mick PriceNew Red Devil Head Football Coach

It’s not an easy task to open on the road at Herbert Hoover (Aug. 24) and at Roane County. And then to have your home opener with Wayne, the defending Double A state champion who could probably be in the Top Four or Top Eight in Triple A. They’re re-ally, really good. It’s one of those games to see where we are. It’ll be a benchmark to see what we need to do to get better. And we have Williamstown coming in the week after that. Coach Smith at Williamstown has done a tremendous job. Their last 10 years of foot-ball have been as good as anybody in the state.

“Then you go on the road to Ritchie, Homecoming versus Braxton, at Clay and St. Marys, Point (Pleasant) at home is a very good team up to Triple A this year and nish at home with Ripley in a game where you can throw out the records.

“The people of Ravenswood are going to see as good of a home schedule as we’ve

RAVENSWOOD - The name Mick Price is no stranger to the circles of West Virginia high school athletics.

Price has been Raven-swood’s head boys’ bas-ketball coach for the past 34 years.

His name, however, is new when it comes to the high school football scene in the Mountain State.

Although he’s been coach-ing football for many years, this will be his rst stab as a head varsity head coach. Price takes over the proud Red Devil football program from Dick Sturm, who en-joyed an outstanding 15-year run as the Ravenswood head coach including an

Price will be one of 18 new head coaches across the state when the season kicks off.

Besides Ravenswood, oth-er schools with new football leaders are Sean Blumette (replacing Tom Bruney) at Brooke, Steve Ware (replac-ing Frank Kleman) at Clay (who Ravenswood plays in Clay on October 19), Ja-son Cunningham (replacing Bucky Stewart) at Gilmer County, Ray Lee (replacing Aaron Baker) at Green-brier East, Jeremy Taylor (replacing Willis May) at Hurricane, Rick Goodrich (replacing Dan Wilson) at John Marshall, Derek Mid-kiff (replacing John Painter)

at Nitro, Ian Whittington (replacing Tony Filberto) at Oak Glen, Christopher Sut-ton (replacing Mike Knise-ly) at Pocahontas County, Bruce Carey (replacing Josh Gorrell) at Robert C. Princeton is also in search of a new head coach for Ted Spadaro, who guided the Tigers for 23 seasons. Spadaro didn’t resign from his job until late July.

Smash & Dash: Jelich, Inc. ready to take it to the house

JN photos by Greg MaticsJELICH, INC. — Twin sophomores Rhys (31) and Connor (42) ank father Joe Jelich, who has joined Mick Price’s staff as running backs coach for the 2012 Red Devils. Rhys and Conner will be together in offensive back eld and also play on defense again this season.

By GREG MATICSLegends of the Fall 2012

RAVENSWOOD – The best laid plans…

The highly anticipated for the varsity debut “Smash & Dash,” also known as the Jelich Twins—Connor and Rhys—took a divergent path in 2011.

As a freshman, Rhys Jelich battled a high ankle sprain that limited his contribu-tions and playing time on

DOUBLE TROUBLE for opposing defenses in 2012 will be “Smash & Dash,” AKA the Jelich Twins--Rhys (31) and Connor (42).offense and also affected his defensive playing time.

He managed just 17 rush-ing yards on 11 carries, after rolling up middle school rushing numbers that were outstanding, if not incred-ible.

He did catch 13 passes good for 134 yards (10.3 avg.) with one touchdown, and completed his lone pass attempt for 52 yards. On special team, Rhys averaged 12.5 yards on four punt re-turns and 34 yards on a pair of kickoff returns.

Defensively, he collected 18 tackles, two sacks and recovered two fumbles.

Twin brother Connor, who

was a standout fullback on the same middle school team coached by Mick Price, rolled up some lofty rushing numbers of his own. But as a varsity freshman last season, he was switched to offensive line out of necessity.

“I’ve been a skill position player my whole life,” said Connor, “so switching to line was weird for a couple of games until I got settled

in.” As it turned out, he settled in well and became on of the most solid of the team’s offensive linemen. He also collected 27 tackles and a sack as a defensive lineman.

Yet good things come to those who wait.

The Jelichs, who follow their older brother Jonas—a recordsetting linebacker—as Red Devils have plans for some record setting of their own. And new head coach Mick Price who coached them to their middle school heights plans to put their talents to ultimate use in 2012.

Now healthy Rhys and

now converted back to full-back Conner join junior Devon Crews in a loaded-with-talent back eld with junior quarterback Heath Burgess.

H a v i n g y e t a n o t h e r Jelich—father Joe—as the running backs coach on Price’s staff adds even more potential to the upcoming season. Joe Jelich is a liv-ing legend in Red Devil Football—All-State, All-Southern and former stand-out nose guard for the WVU Mountaineers. In fact, Price made Joe Jelich agreeing to be on his staff a requirement for him to take the head coaching job.

Jelich’s sons agree that having their father as their position coach is to their advantage and to the ad-vantage of all the running backs.

“It helps a lot,” said Con-nor. “He played D-1 and he played with a lot of great running backs. He knows what he’s talking about.”

Rhys agrees, “It’s good to have him as our coach. He makes us work and he knows what it takes. He ran with us to get us prepared for this coming season.”

And both Jelichs will play both ways this season; Con-nor at defensive end and Rhys at linebacker. And

both believe strength tops their individual talents.

“We did weight training every day to get ready,” said Connor.

As for the upcoming sea-son, Connor says he’s look-ing forward to the Wayne and Ripley games most. “I’d like to make All-State as a sophomore,” he added.

For Rhys, it’s Wayne since the Pioneers have been in-stalled the preseason Class AA No. 1 team. “I’d like to help get this team to Wheel-ing,” he added.

“Joe knows all our kids through his sons (Jonas, Rhys and Connor,” said Price. “He ‘s a well known

guy and probably ‘the’ guy in football to come out of Ravenswood.

“And in Rhys and Conner, along with (Devon) Crews and Ben Johnson, we have four guys who we believe it won’t matter who has the ball. Any of the four could take it the house on any play,” Price added. “willing to sacrifice and block for each other. They care about the team and they’re gonna do whatever it takes for our team to be successful..

“Plus they’re versatile. They can play running back or receiver on any play. That’s the kind of diversity that is crucial to our team.”

Devils will rely on Titus’ leadership and talent in 2012RAVENSWOOD - Coach-

ing football is nothing new to Mick Price. He’s been doing it a lot throughout his professional career.

He’s also no stranger to the duties involved when one assumes the title as head coach.

Price has been the head boys’ basketball coach at Ravenswood for the past 34 seasons and has two state championships to his credit.

Still, despite an impres-sive coaching resume, Price knows that a coach can’t be without players who love taking on leadership roles.

In his rst season as Ra-venswood’s head football coach, Price has turned to senior Brad Titus to be one of those leaders. Titus isn’t

about to let his head coach down in that area.

“We’re going to be young, but talented,” said Titus, who earned Honorable Men-tion Class AA All-State and Little Kanawha Ath-letic Conference last year. “I can’t wait to get started.”

This season will mark Titus’ third as a starter. He’s been a mainstay on both the offensive line and at linebacker since he was a 10th grader.

“He’s the only two-year starter that we have,” said Price. “He’s very aggres-sive. We expect him to be a leader as we do all the other seniors.”

Titus will play center on offense, but could also see action at guard and tackle.

“He will go where we need him and that is the type of player he is,” said

Price. “This is his sport. He’s a smart kid who is academically solid. He’s an outstanding player.”

While he did start, Titus was able to step back and observe as a young player on a talent-laden team that played for the Class AA state championship in the season of 2010.

“I was a sophomore and played in that state cham-pionship game,” said Titus, who was honored as an of-fensive lineman on the Sec-ond Team of the Charleston Daily Mail’s Preseason All-State Team. “I took Jonas’ (Jelich) spot for the remain-der of the season (Jelich was lost early in the second game that year with a knee injury). Those were some big shoes to ll, so I learned a lot.”

Last year, his leadership responsibilities increased some, but again there were other seniors to carry much of the load.

Now, as a senior, he has no choice. He’s more than willing and ready.

Titus was Ravenswood’s top tackler a season ago registering 106 stops. He also picked off two passes from his linebacker position. Titus was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Year for the Red Devils in 2011 by Jackson Newspapers.

His season ended in frus-trating fashion during an opening round home playoff loss to River View. Titus injured his ankle earlier in the week and tweaked it again in the contest with the McDowell County school. He missed most of the fourth quarter.

Titus is excited about his senior season with Price at the helm. He’s impressed with what the new head coach has done with the in-terior of the football facility. “I like seeing the trophies and pictures, it’s very mo-tivating to think you’re a part of a (football) legacy,” said Titus.

His father, Steve, a former Red Devil standout in the late ‘70s, will be a part of Price’s staff this season. “He’s coached me since my rst year of football when I was in third grade,” said Titus. “He coached me again in middle school. He’s al-ways wanted to be a teacher and a coach.”

Steve Titus will nish his teaching degree this spring.

“That’s pretty special. You can tell he’s happy about it,” Brad said of his father.

Brad Titus said he wants to keep playing football beyond his days in the Red and Black.

For now, though, his sights

leader. A role he will cherish each and every day in the 2012 season.

It was a rough year for the Huskies in 2011 as they suf-fered through a 2-8 season. Among the key returners for Tim Myer’s team in 2012 will be running back Josh Mack, who rushed for 546 yards last season. The Huskies will enjoy having the Class AA First Team All-State kicker returning in Joey Forbes, who is also a sure-handed receiver. Line-man Trenton Mahan spent time at a prestigious all-star camp during the summer.

team in Class AA last season but will have to do some reloading under second-year head coach Paul Burdette. The school hosted a post-season game for the first time in its 18-year existence but fell to Oak Glen in Class AA’s opening round to nish 8-3. Junior Hunter Bradley, who split time at QB last season with Dylan Cottrell, threw for 571 yards. The Roane coaches are high on linebacker John Ash.

Sept. 14 Wayne (2011 – DNP)

Regardless of class, Wayne has developed into one of the state’s top programs the past several years. The Pio-

neers are coming off their second Class AA state title in the past six years. The Pioneers were 12-2 when the dust had settled. Class AA First Team All-State running back Brandon Spur-lock returns after rushing for 1,708 yards and scoring 30 touchdowns a year ago. Receiver Austin Pyles, who caught 24 passes last year, is back. Defensively, line-man Dwight Blankenship, a senior, and sophomore linebacker Mason Hodge are back. Last year Wayne opened its state champion-ship season at Ripley’s Me-morial Stadium by defeating Magnolia, the AA champs of 2010. Wayne has been

in five AA championship games since the season of 2000.

Sept. 21 Williamstown (2011 – DNP)

As if playing defending AA champ Wayne isn’t chal-lenging enough, the Devils will meet last year’s Class A runner-up Williamstown the following week. Among the players Terry Smith welcomes back are two re-turning Class A First Team All-State picks in offensive lineman Avery Goff, a 6-4, 310-pounder and defensive lineman Chris McDuffy. RAVENSWOOD - Billy Knicely has already piled up awards and opponents on the wrestling mat, but he’s also making his mark on the football eld—doing ‘rass-lin’ of a different type.

A two-time NHSCA Na-tionals All-American wres-tler, Knicely barely missed a three-peat when he suffered an injury while leading in the nal seconds of a Junior Nationals match earlier this summer at Virginia Beach and had to forfeit.

Billy Knicely is looking for bigger, better things in his senior season as a Red Devil defensive line standout

(Above) Red Devil Billy Knicely powers for a takedown of C.J. Gosey of Berkeley Springs in the Class AA/A state wrestling quarter nals. Knicely rallied to pin Gosey in the nal period, and went on to place fourth at 285 pounds. (Below) Knicely pins another state tournament opponent.

JN photos by Greg MaticsBig Billy Knicely isn’t so nice when it comes to playing in the trenches. The biggest Red Devil, Knicely is looking to rack up more tackles in the new Ravenswood 4-3 defensive alignment this fall.

Earlier this year, Knicely made his second straight trip to the West Virginia State Wrestling Tournament an award-winning one, placing fourth in the AA/A Heavy-weight (285-pound) Class. In doing so, he personally delivered a shot in the arm to the Ravenswood wrestling program being revived by head coach Matt Bender.

Knicely’s state tournament placement was the rst for the Red Devils since two-time state champion David Dennis wrapped up his stel-lar career with a third-place

nish in 2008.Knicely opened his ap-

pearance at the 2012 Big Show with a pin of state No. 6-ranked junior Zach Fleshman (29-19) of Inde-pendence in 3:07. He fol-lowed by rallying from 2-0 down to pin C.J. Gosey of Berkeley Springs, taking the lead with a late takedown and then scoring a fall with 21 seconds left in the third period (5:39).

Knicely lost his chance for a berth in the state cham-pionship final in a hard-fought, close 6-4 decision to Darren Starr of Weir. Starr was completely exhausted after going six rough min-utes with Knicely.

In the consolation semi -nals, Knicely bounced back with another pin of Indepen-dence’s Zach Fleshman in 1:56, before dropping a 4-1 decision to Colton Cogar of Webster County in the con-solation championship.

“Billy was peaking at the right time,” said Coach Bender. “He’s our team leader and placing fourth at states accomplished one of our young team’s goals. Hopefully, his accomplish-ment will give others in our wrestling room motivation that placing at the state tournament can be a reality with hard work.”

“I learned some things at the state tournament toward what I want to accomplish,” said Knicely. “My goal for next year is to be the state champion.”

Flash forward to August. After a solid junior season

as the starter at defensive nose guard for the Red Dev-ils where he collected 39 tackles and a sack, senior-to-be Billy Knicely is back looking for bigger and better things in 2012.

In the trenches, Knicely is most often double teamed by offensive linemen, wres-tling off combinaton blocks to make plays. He is con-vinced that his wrestling helps his football and vice

versa. His natural gifts help too. Kincely is light on his feet and very quick for a 300 pounder. He can run, as evidenced the cross- eld tackles and stops on the sidelines he made in 2011.

And Ravenswood’s plan to go away from a three-man front and move him to an outside tackle post has Knicely licking his lips.

“I’m hoping to get a lot more tackles from the out-side,” he said. “With less

responsibility to clog up the middle, it should free me up to get more stops than I did last year.”

Defensive coordinator Ja-son Jackson says Knicely came into camp lighter and in better shape for 2012. He’s listed at 6-1, 314, al-though he says he’s shed some weight since practice began to around 303. Knice-ly is an imposing presence. His coaches jokingly say he doesn’t have ankles but

hooves. Jovial when he’s not crunching running backs, Knicely just grins.

“I’m looking forward to Hoover (Friday night) and our games against Pt. Pleas-ant and Ripley,” he said. “We’ve got a good team and good chance to make a playoff run. I’d love for us to nish up on Wheeling Island. I’d also like to earn some postseason football honors, and then focus on

Crews looks to cruise in 2012RAVENSWOOD - Devon

Crews is more than ready to cruise this fall.

The shifty junior has his sights set on big things in 2012—big rushing num-bers, for one.

Crews showed flashes of brilliance in 2011 as a sophomore, seizing the op-

portunity when then-senior starter Jeremy Lawrence was injured in the rst half at Tyler Consolidated.

In that game, Crews ran for 65 yards on eight carries and scored a touchdown in helping the Red Devils get past Lawrence’s injury and go on to win big.

He had 16 carries for 59 yards versus Ritchie

County in a showdown of Class AA unbeaten won by Ravenswood, and had his most productive rushing game in an upset loss at Braxton County, rushing for 106 yards on 16 carries.

He added seven carries for 57 yards and a TD versus St. Marys and chipped in seven carries for 19 yards and a TD in the playoff loss

to River View.On the season, Crews ran

62 times for 371 yards (5.98 avg.) and scored four TDs. He also averaged 15 yards per return on ve kickoff returns.

On defense, he collected 15 tackles and recovered a fumble, although his de-fensive playing time was shelved after Lawrence’s in-jury to make sure he stayed healthy to carry the ball on offense.

“Linebacker is a natu-ral position for me,” said Crews, “so I’m really look-ing forward to playing both ways this year. “I lifted more and ran more in preparation for this season. I’m a junior this year, but a lot of people think I’m a senior.”

Crews believes his stron-gest asset is his speed, and he put that on display in the tri-scrimmage at Shinnston August 11, dashing for 50 yards on one run.

“The new offense we’ve put in is more diverse,” said Crews. “We have a lot more plays and formations than before.

“I’m looking forward to the (defending AA state champion and preseason No. 1-ranked) Wayne game most,” said Crews. “I want us to beat Wayne and go to Wheeling. And personally, I’d like to be our team’s leading rusher.”

A gifted athlete, Crews is also a standout shortstop/pitcher for the Red Devil baseball team. His post season honors as a sopho-more included Class AA All-State Special Honorable Mention.

Burgess ready to make some history of his ownBy GREG MATICSLegends of the Fall 2012

RAVENSWOOD - For Heath Burgess, it’s been a long wait, but his time has come.

The 5-9, 152-pound junior will be the captain of the Red Devils’ offensive ship beginning Friday night at Falling Rock versus the Her-bert Hoover Huskies.

“I’m excited,” said Bur-gess. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this, watching all the quarterbacks who came before me.”

Yet he won’t be coming in under center raw and untested. Burgess got some solid varsity experience in 2011, coming into games to run the Red Devils’ Stick I formation in short yardage situations. He’s also been solid quarterbacking the jayvee team.

In 2011, he carried 24 times for 87 yards (3.63 avg.), mostly on naked boot-legs and misdirection plays. He also completed three of 12 pass attempts for 52 yards with one interception. He also returned one punt for 12 yards.

Knowing he was the heir-apparent to the QB job, Burgess put in off-season work to get prepared for his debut in primetime.

“I attended an underclass-man camp in Cincinnati and I’ve been lifting and all that,” he said. “I ran

As for the 2012 Red Dev-

ils, Burgess said. “We aren’t as big as some past teams, but we have a lot of speed. Our offense has changed, although we have the same terms like ‘rain’ and ‘light-ning,’ and we’ve added

winning the state champion-ship on the mat.

“I’m hoping for a full-ride to college, probably in wrestling but maybe in both wrestling and football.”

“Billy anchors our de-fensive line, but we also expect big things from him on offense too,” said Coach See HISTORY, page 10

BILLYMick Price. “He’s in better condition and he’s a senior. It’s time for him to step up and increase his role on this team—play more plays for us to be successful. He’s a smart kid. He has good foot-ball sense, and for his size, he has as good of hands and feet as anybody around.

“We really expect a very big year from him. He can make this team really good. When he’s playing at a high level, he’s as good as anybody.”

As the Red Devils enter the 2012 season, rest assured big Billy Knicely will play a key role, big time.

RAVENSWOOD - At this time of year, every single high school football player who suits up for his team should be excited for what is about to happen.

Forgive Ravenswood’s Patrick Watson if he seems a bit more eager. The Ravenswood senior has every right to be consider-ing what he endured in the season of 2011.

Injuries are a part of the game, and Watson learned that the hard way. A broken ankle early on in preseason practice last August side-lined him for the entire year.

“It was horrible,” he la-mented while thinking back to a year ago. “I had never had a broken bone before. We were about to have our

first scrimmage and were doing a drill and it just snapped.”

It was a crushing blow for Watson, who was ready to make his mark as a junior.

In the 2012 season – Mick Price’s rst as the Red Devil head coach – Watson will nd himself on the receiv-ing end of passes as a wide receiver while trying to stop others from making catches as a defensive back on the prevent side of the ball.

“I can’t wait,” he said of the upcoming campaign. “I’m not going to let any-thing stand in the way.”

Watson has tried to soak up of every minute leading into his senior season of football. When he hit the eld back in June for the three-week practice session it was almost like a dream come true. He was again

running around and catch-ing passes.

He’s set lofty goals for the upcoming season. “I would love to be able to go over 1,000 yards in receiving,” he said.

Price is looking forward to Watson being a contributor on both sides of the ball this season. “He’s very athletic. He has a great speed. He is just a tough nut kind of kid.”

In middle school, Watson had the pleasure of playing for Price. “I think he’s going to do pretty good (as Raven-swood’s head coach). He’s energetic.”

Watson saw limited play-ing time as a sophomore during Ravenswood’s jour-ney to the Class AA state title game in Wheeling.

“That was a great experi-ence,” he said.

Not getting to play last year has helped him appre-ciate that time more than

ever.For the past three years,

Watson has been a com-petitor in the Class AA State Track & Field Meet in the long jump competition. “It (track and field) gets me faster for football before the season starts,” he said.

The 2012 season is about to get underway and Watson has virtually been counting the months, days, hours, minutes and seconds since last year when he was told about the severity of his ankle. He has used the injury as motivation and will be trying his best this season to serve as a leader and remind players just how special it is to be out on the eld.

After all, a high school football career is a precious commodity and Patrick Wat-son had a big chunk wiped out a year ago. He’s ready to make up for what was lost in a big-time way.

RAVENSWOOD - It’s now a waiting game.

It’s not the start Red Devil Ryan Whytsell wanted for his senior season, but he’ll be back.

A freak accident during a non-contact blocking drill on the day before full-con-tact work started has cost the senior-to-be three to four weeks.

Whytsell’s cleats slipped and he suffered a dislocated right patella (kneecap). Ra-venswood’s already thin offensive line suddenly got anorexic.

“We were thin on experi-ence anyway,” lamented line

It’s not the start Whytsell wanted, but he’ll be backBy GREG MATICSLegends of the Fall 2012

coach Will Burgess. “Now we have to stay pretty much injury-free or we’re going to be in real trouble.”

Whytsell, voted one of four team captains by his teammates, was projected as a starter at offensive tackle. He had experience on the jayvee squad and in relief varsity duty last season due to injuries. He was also hop-ing to work into playing time on the defensive front.

In a phase of the game characterized by brute strength, Whystell is non-typical, unique.

“I think my greatest attri-bute is how smart I am,” he said. “I do things they don’t see coming.”

Still, his circumstance has to be devastating.

“It’s been four years of nonstop work,” said the usu-ally laid back Whytsell with a bit of frustration showing. “I was in the weight room as soon as we turned in our pads last November working for my senior season.

“I had improved my lower body strength a lot; and I think that helped me, espe-cially the squats, not get hurt any worse than I did.”

Now it’s a waiting game for Whytsell (6-1, 230). Waiting to heal and rehab and get back. He’s attend-ing practices on crutches to be part of his team. “We’ve moved some people around

on the line, so I think we’ll be alright,” he said.

“Football and school is about all I do,” he added. “I’m hoping to go to college and major in computer sci-ence or engineering.”

For now, Whytsell is count-ing the hours, the days until he can reboot—and get on with his senior Red Devil season.

“I really feel for Ryan and his family,” said Coach Mick Price. “He worked so hard for this , his senior sea-son and he was going to the our starter at left tackle.

“We’re hoping we can get him back in a couple of weeks and get him back into the mix where he belongs.”

Senior tackle Ryan Whytsell is counting the days until he can enter the fray for the Red Devils.

RAVENSWOOD - No one is more excited about the chance to play both ways this fall than Trey Hatcher.

Hatcher, a 6-0, 245-pound sophomore, was a starter on the Red Devil offensive line as a freshman in 2011. He did journeyman duty in the trenches, paving the way for another outstanding rushing effort by Ravenswood.

Hatcher will be a returning starter at left guard this fall, although his versatility will allow him to slide outside to tackle in some offensive situations.

Hatcher excited about playing both ways fordiversi ed Red Devils

He’ll also be the starter at right defensive tackle this season, and he’s looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to play both ways in the trenches. “We’re switching from three down linemen to four on the de-fensive front,” he said.

On the schedule, Hatcher has the Hatchet Game cir-cled as the one he’s looking forward to most.

Personally, his goal is to make All-State. A solid playoff run and postseason honors go hand-in-hand, so that’s on Hatcher’s radar as well for the upcoming season.

JN photo by Greg MaticsAn offensive line starter as a freshman in 2011, Trey Hatcher is looking forward to playing both ways this fall for the Red Devils.

Of the new head coaches, Jimmy Frashier of Ripley will meet up with five in Win eld’s Snyder, Nitro’s Midkiff, Hurricane’s Taylor, Stoffel, Jr. of St. Albans and Price of Ravenswood.

Stoffel, Jr. lived the early

perfect 13-0 last year before falling in the title game to Wheeling Central. Wil-liamstown has played for the Class A title six times in the last nine years, winning it all in 2008.

Sept. 28 at Ritchie Coun-ty (2011 – Ravenswood won, 28-7)

In his rst season at the helm, Mike Dawson, a for-mer Magnolia and WVU standout, guided the Rebels to the Class AA playoffs with a 6-4 record. While Point Pleasant stopped them from moving on, it was certainly a great spring-board for a program that had struggled in recent years. Quarterback/linebacker Alex Lipscomb is one of the key players back this season for the Rebels. He threw for 624 yards in 2011 and eight

Oct. 12 Pt. Pleasant (2011 – Pt. Pleasant won, 37-0)

Having moved back up a class, the Big Black program gives Ravenswood two Class AAA teams (Ripley is the other) on its schedule. Dave Darst’s crew will be hoping to keep the momen-tum going from last year’s climb to the AA state title game. Point lost some out-

standing players but returns a couple of capable backs in Teran Barnitz, who rushed for 789 yards and scored 11 touchdowns, and Tylun Campbell, who galloped for 545 yards on the ground and scored six times. Class AA First Team All-Stater Connor Templeton, 6-3, 210, is back to bolster the line. Point Pleasant was 13-0 last season before losing to Wayne in the championship contest.

Oct. 19 at Clay (2011 – Ravenwood won, 35-6)

This game will be a match-up between two of the 18 new head coaches in the state of West Virginia. Of course, Ravenswood has Mick Price while Clay’s Steve Ware takes over for Frank Kleman. Quarterback Jimmy Brogan returns to

Burgess will also be play-ing safety on defense. “I like offense best,” he said, “but I’ve played both ways my whole life.” He collected 14 tackles in reserve duty in 2011.

As for goals, he named three: “Win the state cham-pionship, keep the Hatchet

Having his dad Will as a coach is actually pretty normal for Heath. “He’s our line coach so I’m not around him all the time, but he’s been my coach my whole life. He gives me point-ers and suggestions when we get home.” His family has always supported him in whatever he does, and they’ll be cheering him on from the stands this fall.

Burgess is a three-sport athlete, playing basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. Sports and schoolwork take up practi-cally all of his time.

The Blue Devils nished 5-5 last season and missed the Class A playoffs. Some of the standouts returning for Jodi Mote’s program this season will be running back Noah Spitzer, who rushed for 690 in 2011 and scored eight touchdowns. Receiver Johnny Riggs returns after snagging 21 passes and scoring three touchdowns last year. Versatile Andrew Cosper returns as does line-man Derek Barnhart.
