Dear Parent and Caregivers,

Our celebration for this week highlighted the ambition students have when engaging in sports events. All students who participated in the cross country event held on Tuesday 29

th May, gave their very best… and with a smile on their faces.

Several students achieved a personal best time and all who ran gave their full effort to improving their time. I would like to acknowledge the work of our Physical and Health Education Specialist Mrs Nia Clarke for her flawless organisation and the support all staff who supervised the run check-points to ensure the safety of our students.

Taking the time to practise and develop positive habits/rituals which refresh and boost our mind and body systems is so important in the busy world we all live in.

From the Deputy’s Desk

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are past the half way point in the term and hasn’t that flown by! Tomorrow will be our Good Standing reward for all students who managed to maintain it throughout the first 5 weeks of term. To do this they would have attended school 85% for high school or 90% for primary school and would have displayed a consistently excellent standard of uniform and behaviour. Well done to all of those who achieved this! As a reward these students will spend the final twenty minutes of tomorrow afternoon down on the oval enjoying an icy pole in the sunshine! Next term for the Good Standing reward we will be holding an In-School Disco! To get a ticket you will need to maintain Good Standing for the final 4 weeks of term! Stay tuned for more information! Stay safe and enjoy your long weekend for those lucky enough to get one! Mr Ratz Deputy Principal

Macey’s Big Win

On Tuesday the 29th of May,10:30am, Macey Green

ran her cross country at the RDHS oval and the surrounding bush. She won her the race. Macey ran, around the smiley tree, the cricket pitch and then through the finish line. She was racing against 12 other students in year 1. Macey was running really well and eventually won by four metres! After the race she was puffed, thirsty and tired. “ I felt puffed, but however happy for myself” Macey told me. “ I think I did good and ran fast” she said “I beat every student in year 1” Macey said she was proud of coming first and that she was focused on trying to beat Jacob. Macey had a good time running her cross country track. After the race she felt so many emotions. For instance, proud, puffed, thirsty and happy. Macey is a speed demine! Thank you Mrs Clarke for your amazing sport lessons which helped Macey to become a fit little sporty champion. By Chelsea Green

Matildas shocking win!!! On Tuesday, the 29

th of May, at 9:30 AM Matilda

Norrish, year 3/ 4, ran a lap of the oval and the fire break for cross country (a dirt track.) When she ran the track a few of the fast kids over took her, Sebastian Chaytor, Mitchell Burton and Riley Smith. Matilda then decided to get her place in the top three, so she braced herself and bolted past them leaving them far behind. But Sebastian didn’t like the idea of being 2

nd, so he stepped up

his game and tried to take his (so called) place as first, but no matter what his abilities just weren’t good enough. Matilda was just too good. In the end Matilda was shocked that she came first!!! She was so proud and excited. The next few minutes Matilda found out that she was invited to inter-school. She almost died of happiness, not like it was her first time though. By Madi Kalalo

SMITH BELLI’s FIRST RACE

On Tuesday 29th of May, the kindy’s participated in the cross country on the Ravensthorpe District High School

oval and surroundings. Smith Belli and his class ran the race. They went around the smiley tree and then the class ran around the cones to the finish line. Smith Belli had his very first cross country. Smith Belli said at the end of the race he, “Was very thirsty and hungry”. When Smith finished the cross country, he was proud of his efforts and encouraged him to want to run faster than all the students in the next race. At the end of his race all the students sat down and listen to Mrs Clarke. If you came 1

st, 2

nd, 3

rd or 4

th the students would go to Mrs Clarke and get a ribbon and possibly go to Kojonup

Interschool cross country on the 15th of June.

R.D.H.S students all had a chance to run the cross country. Most students bet the record in their own age group, there wasn’t every single person running but it was good if they did to try and beat the record than just slack off. Thank you to Mrs Clarke for making the cross country success, all the parents who came to watch their child/s in the race. No one should care what they came in the race. It doesn’t matter what they come; the students should just be proud of what their effort was.

Tuesday the 29th of May dawned cool but dry for Ravensthorpe District High School’s annual cross country carnival. Students showed up, ready to compete for their factions. Cross country is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate their long distance running skills. This year, we recorded extremely high levels of participation, which was a fantastic sight to see. The 5/6’s were up first, all determined to beat their personal best. Next came the 3/4’s, hoping to impress. Then the 1/2’s, with the 2’s running the “proper track” for the first time

and the year 1’s being the loudest supporters of their classmates. Last, but most certainly not least, was the Kindy and Pre-Primary, who received the loudest cheers of all. After recess, the high schoolers all set off together, determined to beat their personal bests and potentially break some records. We had a multitude of personal bests on the day which was exciting for everyone. We also had five records broken. The new records were set by; Shakira Bratten, Abbey Smith, Mitch Jones, Matilda Norrish and Noah Wisewould. A special congratulations to these five students. A big thank you goes to the parents who came down to support their child and cheer loudly. Thank you also goes to the teachers for helping out Mrs Clarke; she couldn’t have done it without you.

Foodbank WA School Breakfast Program

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is one of the most important and unique programs run by Foodbank WA. The program commenced in 2001, with 17 schools registering in response to a growing awareness that students were going to school most days without eating breakfast. During 2010, 317 schools were involved in the School Breakfast Program. The program directly reached over 11,000 children and served over 37,000 breakfasts and 11,500 ‘emergency’ meals per week. Of these , 138 schools (44%) were located in the metropolitan area, with 179 (56%) located across regional WA, stretching from Kalumburu and Kununurra in the north to Esperance and Albany in the south, to remote schools along the South Australian/Northern Territory borders. Foodbank WA supplies quality School Breakfast Program food products to registered schools free of charge, to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to receive a wholesome, nutritious breakfast on a regular basis. The School Breakfast Program would not be possible without the generous support of Foodbank WA’s government and corporate sponsors. These organisations provide funding so that Foodbank is able to purchase the breakfast food items and pay for the freight to deliver the breakfast product to outlying regional schools

Why are children and adolescents skipping breakfast?

There are a number of reasons why children and adolescents do not consume breakfast on a regular basis including:

Alack of time

Not being hungry in the morning

Not wanting to eat alone

A lack of food (or appropriate food) in the house

Having to leave home early in the morning (O’Donoghue, Davis & Balson, 2010; Shaw, 1998)

School Breakfast Program Outcomes

The 2010 School Breakfast Program Coordinator’s Survey (Mills, 2011) reported that the program positively contributes to the following factors:

Pysical health (98%)

Student concentration (96%)

Social skills (92%)

Student behaviour (91%)

Mental health (91%)

Social relations between students and school staff (91%)

Awareness of healthy eating (91%)

Engagement with class activities (84%)

Class attendance (82%)

Academic outcomes (80%)

Punctuality to class (80%)

Food selection and preparation skills (75%)

Social relations between students and community members (73%)
