Raven’s Roost: A Message from

the Principal As we enter the month of May, students and

teachers are making final preparations for the

Standards of Learning Tests. This is a very

stressful time for everyone as online testing,

including make-ups, span several weeks.

Students will be assisted by providing a quiet

testing environment and accommodations for

those who need them. Help your student by

encouraging them to go to bed early, eat

breakfast each day and do their very best.

The culminating activities for the music

department begin with an eighth grade music

field trip to Hersey Park on Saturday May 12,

2012. This is followed by final concerts on all

levels (consult the calendar).

The PTA will hold its annual 8th grade lock-in on

Saturday June 2, 2012. Stay tuned for more

details. The eighth grade promotion ceremony

will be held on Monday June 4 at 7 p.m. in the

Potomac Falls High School gym. Exams for all

high school level classes begin on Tuesday June

5–8.

School Hours School hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:18 p.m. The

building will be open for students at 8:00 a.m.

Any student arriving before 8:00 a.m. may wait

in the cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 8:00

a.m. until 8:20 a.m. Students that are not

eating breakfast and all other students arriving

after 8:00 a.m. are to go to their appropriate

grade level House. All students will report to

their first block classroom at the 8:15 a.m. bell.

Visitor, Volunteer, and Late

Student Sign in Procedure All visitors need to stop by the main office upon

arrival. Each visitor, volunteer, and all late

students will log into the computer located on

the table to your left as you enter the Main

Office. A pass or name tag will automatically

print out. While at RBMS you will be required

to wear a visitor’s name tag. Students will take

their late pass to their House office and sign in

there as well. Please be prepared to show a

valid ID.

Student Drop off Procedure We have signs to direct traffic through our

parking lot. The school’s front parking

lots should not to be used as a morning drop off

area. Please follow the “ravens” to the area

Page 3: Raven’s Roost: A Message from the Principal

River Bend Middle School May-June 2012

3

designated for student drop off located on the

side of River Bend. This area was created for

the safety of our students. In order to maintain

a continuous flow of traffic, pull up as far as

possible and allow your student to exit the

vehicle at any point on the sidewalk. Be

considerate of others and move on once your

child disembarks. If you would like to wait with

your child until the doors open at 8 o’clock,

please move to a parking space. Please do not

park in the designated student drop off area.

Early Dismissals If at all possible, please send a note in with your

child the morning of an appointment. The

student’s house secretary will write a pass to

excuse the student at the appropriate time.

This will alleviate the need to disrupt the

classroom and your child will be waiting in the

front office when you arrive.

Students Tardy to School All students must be in their classroom by the

8:30 a.m. bell. Any student arriving to class

after the 8:30 a.m. bell will be considered

“tardy” and must sign in at the main office to

receive a “tardy” pass. A parent/guardian

should accompany their student to the office or

send a note with the student when arriving late

to school.

Attendance River Bend parents: we need your help! When

your child is absent, please call the attendance

line at (571) 434-3222 to notify the school. For

your convenience, this is a 24-hour answering

machine. An absence will be unexcused if the

school does not receive a note or a phone

message from the parent or guardian.

Address and Phone Changes Moving? New phone number? We need your address and telephone updates. If you are moving and your child will be attending another school for 2012-13, please notify your child’s counselor as soon as possible. If you have moved and are still within our attendance zone, please remember to stop by the school to fill out a change of address form. We will need to see proof of your new residence. This proof can be a lease, deed, settlement papers or mortgage statement. To change a work or home telephone number,

parents/guardians need to contact the

attendance secretary at 571-434-3220 or on

line at www.loudoun.k12.va.us.

Counselor’s Corner Sherri Robinson, Lead Counselor, Special Services, AOS, and TJ Andrew Tafaro, 6th Grade Counselor The Guidance Department would like to take this opportunity to let the students know how proud we are of them. We have seen much growth occur in many aspects -- physically, intellectually, and emotionally. This is very gratifying to all of us at River Bend Middle School. Parents, please be aware that we mailed letters to the homes of children who are failing two or more of their academic classes - Math, History, Language Arts, Science (and Health and PE/full year elective for 8th graders) at the close of the 3rd quarter grading period. Please consider these letters seriously. Your child must pass three out of four academic classes to be promoted to the next grade level. This means

Page 4: Raven’s Roost: A Message from the Principal

River Bend Middle School May-June 2012

4

that if they fail two classes, they must go to summer school in order to be promoted. If you receive one of these letters regarding your child, and you feel your child is in jeopardy of failing, please contact your child’s counselor.

Important Information for All Rising 9th Graders - Expunging Grades The parent of any student, who while in middle school, took a high school credit course (Algebra, Geometry, or a Foreign Language) may elect to have the grade (and credit) omitted (removed) from the student’s transcript. If a parent elects to have such a grade omitted, written notice must be given by the parent to the guidance department of the high school their student will attend, on or before August 15 of the year in which the student finishes the eighth grade. Parents of students eligible to make this election will be provided within notice when the student receives the final report from the middle school. Strong consideration should be given for expunging low grades in credit-bearing courses. (Please see the Middle School Program of Studies to read the complete LCPS policy on expunging grades.)

Clinic Tips Paula Bailey, RN All I can say is hopefully, spring showers will

bring beautiful May flowers. I want to remind

everyone that even though we are getting

toward the end of the school year, it is

important to keep the clinic and school updated

on any home/work/cell phone changes. This

information is vital if we need to contact you

during the day.

Remember if your child needs medication

during the remainder of the school year the

parents must transport the medication to the

school. Any prescription medication must have

a signed form from the physician. Forms can be

obtained from the clinic or the River Bend

Middle School (RBMS) website.

Rising 9th Grade Parents Congratulations to our 8th grade students as

they begin their adventure into high school. Is

your student going to participate in VHSL

athletics in high school? If so, a physical

examination is required. In order to play sports

next fall, the physical must not have been done

prior to May 1, 2012. Anything prior to this

date is not considered current and will not be

accepted for athletic eligibility. VHSL forms

needed to participate in athletics will be

available in the main office of Potomac Falls

High School (PFHS) toward the end May or on

their school web page. Tryout information will

be posted on the PFHS Athletic website. Fall

sports tryout will begin July 30, 2012. PFHS

Sports Physical Night for 2012-2013 is

scheduled for Thursday May 31st, 2012 from 6-8

pm @ Park View High School, cost - $35. Please

check the PFHS athletic webpage for updates

throughout the summer.

Parents of rising 6th graders: Check your child’s immunization record Parents, if you have a rising 6th grader,

remember that they must have a current

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)

vaccination on file by August 27, 2012. If your

child is missing this shot they will not be

allowed to enter school, unless they have a

written note from the physician explaining why

the shot is deferred. If your child will not be old

enough to receive the vaccination, a note from

Page 7: Raven’s Roost: A Message from the Principal

River Bend Middle School May-June 2012

7

the doctor must be on file at RBMS. Please have

this documentation to RBMS before the cutoff

date. There will be no grace period for those

lacking the shot. They will be excluded from

school the first day of school.

Information for school year 2012-2013: The process of closing down the clinic for the

summer has begun. If your child presently has

medication at school (inhaler, nebulizer, daily

medications, Epi-pens, diabetes medication,

etc.) and will be required to take these

medications next year, please be aware that

new doctors orders are required for each school

year.

Information Regarding Medication Forms

for 2012-2013 School Year:

Physician order forms for medication,

severe allergy, asthma, diabetes, and

seizures will be sent home at the end of

this year for students who require

medication at school. The forms will be

in the student’s final report card

envelope. These forms are also

accessible to you or your physician on

the Loudoun County Public Schools

Student Health Services Web site:

http://www.lcps.org/site/Default.aspx?

PageID=2014.

Please return the new form to the school so

your child's medical needs will be in place for

the start of the new school year. I will be

returning to RBMS toward the end of August.

You may begin dropping off medication at this

time.

Remember a new form for medication is

required each new school year. Also, the

medication must be brought to school by an

adult and must be in the prescription bottle

from the pharmacy or in the original packaging.

Students are not allowed to transport any

medication, prescription or over-the-counter,

to school.

End of year medication pick-up: Parents if you have medication in the clinic

please pick-up the medication by June 8th at

3:18 PM. LCPS medication policy requires we

destroy any medication not picked up. No

medication will be held for the next school

term.

If you have any questions please feel free to

contact the clinic.

Parent Link Tricia Anderson, Parent Liaison Take a few minutes to check out “Middle School

Parents Still Make A Difference” on the school

website if you haven’t read it in awhile. It is

published monthly in both English and Spanish,

and has some great articles. Go to the River

Bend web page under Parents to find the link or

check on our Parent Info board across from

Main Office. We always keep a copy there

along with the newsletter and lots of other

good info.

School-wide SOL testing takes place at River

Bend this month (see the calendar for the

detailed schedule), so I thought I would remind

you of some helpful hints to get you and your

child through the testing period.

Page 8: Raven’s Roost: A Message from the Principal

River Bend Middle School May-June 2012

8

Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast

every day, but especially during SOL testing

time. Studies show hungry kids don't

concentrate as well as kids who've had a good

breakfast. Some protein – yoghurt, eggs,

cheese, meat – with the meal will last them

through testing and until lunch time.

Sleep! Make sure your child is getting at least

eight hours of sleep each night. Find a routine

and stick with it, especially the night before a

test. Again, focus suffers when a child doesn't

get enough sleep.

Have a discussion with your child about the SOL

tests. Explain how important it is to read

through the directions before starting the test.

Also encourage your child to look over the test

before taking it. This will give him/her the

opportunity to become familiar with the format

and type of questions being asked. Stress to

your child that it never hurts to have a general

overview of the test before beginning.

For online practice tests and further

information on testing, please click on this link:

http://www.lcps.org/domain/3978 or go to the

Parents Page on the River Bend website and

look up SOL resources.

Remember, if you are thinking about having

your child participate in a summer camp, now is

the time to do your research and register. I’ve

included our list of summer activities for your

teen in this newsletter and it will be posted on

the school web page.

RBMS Mathcounts The MATHCOUNTS club is happy to announce that our school has achieved the Gold Level Status recognition in the national MATHCOUNTS club program, yet again this year! Getting this status was a multiple step process.

The students in our club successfully completed a total of five rigorous math challenges to achieve the Silver Level Status first. Following the Silver Level Challenges, a minimum of 12 students had to take the Ultimate challenge with at least 80% accuracy to achieve the Gold

Science Olympiad Science Olympiad Team Takes 5th at State Competition and Wins WOW Award. River Bend Middle School's Science Olympiad teams competed at the state competition last week-end.

We want to heartily congratulate all of the members for their hard work competing. We especially want to congratulate the Storm the Castle team you see in this picture. They won 5th place for their hard work developing and presenting their trebuchet, a siege engine originally employed in the middle ages. Not only did they earn a superb 5th place, but they also achieved a WOW award for their ethics and good sportsmanship.

Thanks to Ethan and David for making River Bend proud of you!! Fantastic jobs!! Thanks to the coaches of all of the students who competed. River Bend would like to especially thank Mrs. Sanjita Sethi for starting Science Olympiad at River Bend this year and for all of her work coordinating and leading the coaches and students.
