RavennaUNESCO Heritage

“The early Christian religious monuments in Ravenna are of outstanding signifi-cance by virtue of the supreme artistry of the mosaic art that they contain, and also because of the crucial evidence that they provide of artistic and religious relation-ships and contacts at an important period of European cultural history”.

It is for this reason that in December 1996 Unesco ratified the inscription of the eight Early Christian monuments of Ravenna in the World Heritage List of Unesco. From that moment, the Basil-

ica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Arian Baptistery and the Neonian Baptistery, the Ba-silica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, the Archiepiscopal Chapel and the Mausoleum of Theoderic have been not only heritage of our city but also of the entire world.

of those times. The Rasponi Crypt and the Roof Gardens are real treasures of art and nature in the heart of Ravenna. The most important part of the crypt is the mosaic floor dating back to the 6th century, originally paving the Church of San Severo in Classe. Its colour-ful decorations consist of ornamental pat-terns and animal figures (hens, ducks, geese, ram heads and snakes) depicted in spontan-eous gestures. The suggestive Roof Gardens overlook Piazza San Francesco and Dante’s Tomb. Tamo - All the Adventure of Mo-saic - is an innovative and multifaceted mu-seum dedicated to the art of mosaic, hosted in the suggestive 14th-century Church of San Nicolò. It is a fascinating tour at the discovery of beautiful mosaics taken from the heritage of Ravenna – from ancient to contemporary artworks – including sever-al unreleased mosaics. All the exhibition is enriched by interactive and multimedia set-tings. The section ‘Mo-saics between Hell and Heaven’ is dedicated to the figure of Dante, with mosaics by great Italian masters of the 20th century.

The most recent archaeological findings of Ravenna reveal themselves to the public. The Domus of the Stone Carpets hosts 14 rooms paved with splendid polychrome mosaics and marbles, that were originally part of a Byzantine private building (domus) dating back to the 5th-6th Century a.D.Visitors can admire the splendid mosaic floors decorated with geometric, floral and figurative elements, unique in their kind, such as the “Dance of the Seasons Spirits” or the “Good Shepherd”.For its suggestion and for adopting innov-ative managerial solutions, the Domus was awarded with several prizes and rec-ognitions. The Ancient Port of Classe was one of the most important harbours during the Roman and Byzantine period, and it developed around to the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. The tour starts at the Visitors Centre, where the history of the town is explained through projections. Later on, the tour continues walking beside the original port warehouses and a typical stone-paved ancient street that crosses the whole area;10 illustrative panels, 5 “perspective panels” with reconstructions of architectural elements that are no longer present today, will make visitors experience the atmosphere

www.turismo.ra.it

Since 1990 Ravenna Festival has taken its programme to the heart of the city, featur-ing all artistic languages. Every year Rav-enna turns into a stage, from the ancient basilicas shining with mosaics to the the-atres and the historic buildings. As usual, the protagonists are world-renowned artists, starting with Riccardo Muti lead-ing the Orchestra del Maggio Fiorentino for the concert of Macbeth and the Or-chestra Giovanile Cherubini for the con-cert ‘Le vie dell’amicizia’. On the stage will also be Valerij Gergiev, Wayne Marshall, Dennis Russel Davies, David Fray, while the dance programme includes the étoile Roberto Bolle and the choreographers Bill T. Jones and Emio Greco. Kiss Me Kate the musical by Cole Porter in the produc-tion by Opera North is the heart of the homage to American componists, from Bernstein to Glass; Valentyn Sylvestrov will be, on the other hand, guest of the

section dedicated to Ukraine. Besides, the Festival pays Dante Alighieri a tribute of daily events. Young Artists for Dante celebrates the Poet and father of the Ital-ian language in the Cloisters by his Tomb, while the Vespers at San Vitale feature the talents of sacred music. In Autumn the Festival is back with a special and ambitious programme which alternates three different operas on the stage of the Alighieri Theatre night after night. This year’s Autumn Trilogy is dedicated to Nabucco, Rigoletto and Otello.

Ravenna seemed to Dante the most ap-propriate place to complete his Divine Comedy. In Ravenna, the Poet was im-mersed in a peaceful atmosphere, the per-fect atmosphere to complete the drafting of the Paradise: the city in the Commedia is always characterized by a veneer of calm and stillness. Dante immediately became an object of devotion in Ravenna, devo-tion that turned into a real worship after his death, occurred in September 1321.Today, the city perpetuates the memory of the Poet with the programme of talks, readings, exhibitions and concerts “Set-tembre Dantesco” and houses his relics and memorabilia at Dante Museum.

Along with Dante’s Tomb, Quadrarco di Braccioforte and Basilica of San France-sco, the Museum is part of the so-called “Zona del Silenzio” (Area of Silence), that encompasses the places of Dante in Ravenna.

Museum of Classe

The museum of the city and of the terri-tory of Classe is to inaugurate in Autumn 2018. It narrates the tight relationship be-tween Ravenna and people from all over the world that were gradually settling this area. The museum is centred on the com-pelling story of Ravenna, three times cap-ital, whose destiny is inextricably linked to the end of the Roman Empire and to the upcoming of a new era that was going to influence Europe and the at that time known world. It is an interesting journey inside history, where specific themes like navigation and commerce are thoroughly examined. Moreover, there will be art-works, three-dimensional models, graphic and multemedial setups.
