    Capacity

You must make sure your generator can supply enoughrated (running) and surge (starting) watts for the items youwill power at the same time. Follow these simple steps:

    1. Select the items you will power at the same time.

    2. Total the rated(running) watts of these items. This is theamount of poweryour generator must produceto keepyour items running. SeeWattage ReferenceGuide.

    3. Estimatehow many surge (starting) watts you will need.Surge wattage is the short burst of power neededtostart electric motor-driven tools or appliancessuch as acircular saw or refrigerator. Becausenot all motors startat the sametime, total surge watts can be estimatedbyadding only the item(s) with the highest additional surgewatts to the total rated watts from step 2.

    Power Management

To prolong the life of your generator and attached devices, itis important to take care when adding electrical loads to yourgenerator. There should be nothing connected to thegenerator outlets before starting its engine. The correct andsafe way to manage generator power is to sequentially addloads as follows:

    1. With nothing connected to the generator, start theengine as described in this manual.

    2. Plug in andturn on the first load, preferably the largestload you have.

    3. Permit the generator output to stabilize (engine runssmoothly and attached deviceoperates properly).

    4. Plug in andturn on the next load.

    5. Again, permit the generator to stabilize.

    6. Repeatsteps 4 and 5 for each additional load.

NEVERadd more loads than the generator capacity. Takespecial care to consider surge loads in generator capacity, asdescribed above.

    General Recommendations

Regular maintenancewill improvethe performanceand extendthe life of the generator.Seeany authorizeddealer for service.

The generator's warranty does not cover items that havebeen subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receivefull value from the warranty, the operator must maintain thegenerator as instructed in this manual. Some adjustments will needto be made periodically toproperly maintain your generator.

All service and adjustments should be made at least onceeach season. Follow the requirements in the MaintenanceSchedule chart above.

NOTICE Oncea year you should clean or replace the sparkplug and replacethe air filter. A new spark plug and clean airfilter assure proper fuel-air mixture and help your engine runbetter and last longer.

    Emissions Control

Maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emissionscontroldevices and systemsmay be performed by anynon-roadengine repair establishment or individual. However, to obtain "no charge" emissions control service, the work must be performed by a factory authorized dealer.Seethe Emissions Warranty.

Briggs & Stratton makesthisinformation available to the consumer on our emissionslabels. The engine emissions label will indicate certificationinformation.

The Emissions Durability Perioddescribes the number ofhours of actual running time for which the engine is certifiedto be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenanceinaccordancewith the Operating & Maintenance Instructions. The following categories are used:

Moderate:Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 125 hoursof actual engine running time.

Intermediate:Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 250 hoursof actual engine running time.

Extended:Engine is certified to be emissions compliant for 500 hoursof actual engine running time.

For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to25 hours peryear. Therefore, the Emissions DurabilityPeriod of an engine with an intermediate rating wouldequate to 10 to 12 years. Briggs & Stratton engines arecertified to meet the United States Environmental ProtectionAgency (USEPA)Phase2 emissions standards. For Phase2certified engines, the Emissions Compliance Period referredto on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the numberof operating hours for which the engine has beenshown tomeet Federalemissions requirements.

    For engines less than 225 cc displacement.Category C = 125 hoursCategory B = 250 hoursCategory A = 500 hours

    For engines of 225 cc or more displacement.Category C = 250 hoursCategory B = 500 hoursCategory A = 1000 hours

Power Ratings: The gross power rating for individual gas enginemodels is labeledin accordancewith SAE(Society ofAutomotive Engineers)code J1940 (Small EnginePower & Torque Rating Procedure),and rating performance has beenobtainedand corrected in accordancewith SAEJ1995 (Revision 2002-05). Torquevalues arederived at 3060 RPM; horsepowervaluesarederived at 3600 RPIVl.The gross power curves can beviewed at www.BRIGGSandSTRATTON.COIVI.Net power valuesare takenwith exhaustand air cleanerinstalledwhereasgross power valuesarecollected without these attachments.Actual gross enginepower will be higher than net engine power and is affectedby, among other things, ambient operatingconditions and engine-to-enginevariability. Giventhe wide array of products on which engines are placed, the gas engine may not developthe rated grosspower when used in a given piece of power equipment. This difference is dueto avariety of factors including, but not limited to,the variety of enginecomponents (air cleaner, exhaust, charging, cooling, carburetor, fuel pump, etc.), application limitations, ambient operatingconditions (temperature, humidity, altitude), and engine-to-enginevariability. Dueto manufacturingandcapacity limitations, Briggs & Stratton maysubstitute an engineof higher rated power for this Series engine.
