Being able to work with dollars as units relative to time is one of the most fundamental standards to prepare students for financial literacy. In Vacation Day, Cicero the Guard and his colleague are discussing vacation. Cicero gets one day of vacation every year. This year he wants to go to an all-inclusive resort, and he hopes to get a pedicure. Students must determine whether Cicero can afford to go to the resort. The data provided are Cicero’s Guard contract and the resort pamphlet.
LESSON: VACATION DAYCan the guard afford the all-inclusive resort?
Vacation Day
Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?

Gladys: Avoid rushing to set up a proportion to solve ratio problems in Grade 6, as it is not required at this level. Encourage strategies such as ratio tables, tape diagrams, double number lines, and other intuitive strategies used by students. Give students opportunities to share their own creative methods with classmates.
Kevin: Provide students opportunities to analyze various rates and unit rates, taken from real-world contexts, and appearing in different forms (written text, table, graphs). Consider assigning these rates/unit rates in the various forms to students and ask them to find classmates with matching rates/unit rates.
Megan: Ask students to use the skills in this standard to create and solve their own real-world problem; then have students exchange with each other.
