Rational Numbers Unit 2 **
“I can” statements…
• Statements you will be able to make by the end of this unit:
• I can identify between rational and irrational numbers and order rational numbers.
• I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals.
Activating Prior Knowledge
• Think of a number between 9 and 10.
• Think of both fractions and decimals.
• Mr. Kendall’s number = 9.5 or 9
• I would like 3 volunteers to come forward with their numbers.
• We’re going to put them on the number line on the Smartboard.

Put your answers on the number line.
• How did you decide where to place your number on the number line?
• What about you Mr. Kendall?

1st Scenario…
• Suppose you are ice fishing in NWT. The temperature at midnight is -10 °C. At 6 AM the next day the temperature is -9 °C. What must the temperature have been at some time during the night?
• Mark and label that temperature on the thermometer on the next slide.
2nd Scenario…
• Let’s imagine that you are buying a car on a payment plan. Put the payment plans in order of cheapest to most expensive? 75 per month or 45 per month or 25 per month ?

My number is… Game and Partner Challenge
• First we will start with Mr. Kendall reading off a series of clues about a rational number that he has in his mind.
• Each clue will narrow the number down until there is only 1 possible answer.
• You will then
