Are Banks Short Changing Small Businesses? The cash handling regime recently introduced by banks has left many small businesseswondering whether or not banks want to support them at all. The Government describes smallbusinesses as the cornerstone of economic recovery. The banks, who were all bailed out bythe Government, and in whom we, the taxpayers, have invested considerably, seem to want toput barriers in the way.The latest trick is to limit access to overnight security deposit boxes to very large businesscustomers with existing facilities and to make it more difficult to lodge cash.If a business customer wishes to lodge cash (up to €3000 in cheques) then they have to usean ATM in the bank (when they are working). For coin lodgements only full sachets of coins willbe accepted, and then only on Tuesday morning 10.00 to 12.00 and all day Friday. Many smallbusinesses operate over the weekend and want to bank their takings both on a Friday and aMonday. Our experience has been that this coin lodgement process does not always availableduring all Friday banking hours. Business banking has restricted opening hours. Queues at thecashiers counters are very long at most times every day because of staff cutbacks and allthis attributes to an extra cost to small businesses. It has been reported that bank staff were advised that they will be redeployed to other activitiesto provide a better service to customers. I hope for their sakes that this is correct but forgiveme for being cynical. Whatever, happened to the concept of “customer service"? The onlybeneficiaries from this action will be the fat cat directors who still enjoy huge bonuses, not thecustomers and not the staff.

Dear All,I am writing in the interests of
Our children’s health Our Community’s well being A clean and attractive environment
Today, I walked the village, from one end to the other. Starting at BroadfieldManor, I followed the main road, diverting through Forest Hills and back onto themain road at the Credit Union. My destination was the park, situated at the oppositeend of the village, close to Avoca.
During my walk, I had several pleasant experiences. I said ‘hello’ to bothfamiliar and unfamiliar faces, chatted to a few, did a little shopping, and enjoyed thelovely park.
However, I could not help but notice a very unpalatable truth. The residents ofRathcoole are not a very happy bunch for one obvious reason. The amount of dogexcrement on the pavements, the grass verges and in the park was shocking. It was inclumps, lumps, pools and smears....in the housing estates, on the streets andpavements, and in the park.
Now you might say, ‘That was just today. It’s not always like that!’ However,I would not agree. I am tired of picking up, walking around, holding my nose, alerting my children to side step, stepping off the pavement to avoid the buggy beingdestroyed. The list is endless. I kid you not!
I have checked out the feelings, reactions and thoughts of several neighbours inmy own estate and others who lived elsewhere in the village. All, without exception, expressed a similar response to my own. There were many sighs and some expletivesin the telling too!
ALL Rathcoole residents, with the exception of dog owners who habitually donot pick up after their dogs, resent deeply the latter’s behaviour. Many reasons werestated:
The bacteria and viruses in dog faeces have dreadful potential healthconsequences for our children including blindness and digestiveproblems.
It is impossible to walk with confidence along our streets and estates without the danger of smelly filth on shoes, buggies, clothes, pets etc.
The image of Rathcoole as an attractive village to live in and visit is massivelycompromised. In the interests of a happier, healthier and more attractive and
sweet-smelling community, I am asking all concerned to take a positive approach tothis problem. Talk to your own family and neighbours in an effort to raise awareness.Offer a spare poop bag to dog walkers ‘caught short’.In short, get involved, get talking and pick up!Thank you.

Rathcoole Community Council is striving to achieve to maintain and enhance communityand village life. A few of the items we are pursuing are the:
Village Design Statement: we are continuing with this and shall be approachinggroups within the community, sporting, business and others for their views. We have hadtwo public meetings so far. South Dublin County Council have continued with their supportand are securing funding for the feasibility study with an independent consultant. It is anopportunity for our community to have their say in how Rathcoole develops going into thefuture and the resultant document shall form future developments in the area.
Tidy Towns: continues with the excellent work of the volunteers .They are doing afantastic job and more volunteers are welcome. As we approach Christmas, theobvious delight for many are the Christmas Lights. Rathcoole is very proud of how it looksover the Christmas period and we are indebted to the selfless work of the Christmas Lightscommittee who work very hard.
The Garda Forum: has been initiated between ourselves Sergeant BrendanLyons, of an Garda Síochána and South Dublin County Council. We are proposing to have4 meetings every year, with two representatives from each district of Newcastle, Saggart,Brittas and Rathcoole. Volunteers greatly received!
Four Districts Day Care Centre: has been taken on by a new committee. While notdirectly involved, Rathcoole Community Council support the work of the volunteers who areputting their shoulder to the wheel. The reality is that the Day Care Centre provides muchneeded services and help to the community, especially the elderly.
The Slade Valley Heritage Trail : has commenced with a scoping exercise. It ishoped that a walk from Rathcoole Park through Saggart, Slade Valley up to Brittas shallbecome a reality and an attraction to visitors and residents of the area. We are heavilyinvolved across a number of communities and groups and are very proud of ourassociation with South Dublin County Council on this project.
The Old Courthouse / Library: is due to be renovated .Maintenance works aredue to start shortly. We had made a presentation to South Dublin County Council inrespect of the important position this building holds in the hearts and minds of Rathcooleresidents. We have proposed to use it for exhibitions and as a space for pastimes andhobby activities. We would like to see it being used for concerts and shows. There are anumber of plays and concerts scheduled over the next few months.
If you wish to become involved contact the community centre for further informationand they will direct you to the right area!
