RATES OF
REACTION: EFFECT
OF CATALYST
Merve Gonca Karaca
INTRODUCTION
A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction but remains chemically unchanged.
The catalyst allows the reaction to proceed by an alternate reaction mechanism with a lower activation energy. A catalyst is not consumed in a chemical reaction!
MANGANESE PEROXİDE
AIM
The purpose of this experiment is to show the effect of a catalyst on the rate of a reaction.
EXPERIMENT
Experiment : the speed at which the oygen was given off using a catalyst is inveestigated using the apparrus above.
OBSERVATION
This reaction normally proceeds very slowly. When the catalyst, manganese dioxide, is added, the rate of the reaction increases appreciably; this can be seen by the large volume the oxygen gas bubbles through the hyrdogen peroxide solution.
CONCLUSION
When a catalyst such as Manganese dioxide is added in a reaction, it speeds up the reaction .
The products form fast. Activation energy is lowered by catalyst. At the end of this experiment, hydrogen
peroxide is decomposed into water and oxygen.
In the experiment...
2 H2O2(aq) manganese dioxide 2 H2O(l) + O2(g)
