You’d have to be quite a chef to fill two high-end restaurants, that happen to be right next door to each other, night after night. But then,

Luke Dale-Roberts is quite a chef and The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club are two quite remarkable restaurants.

CONSTANTIA UITSIG BLANC DE BLANCS 2008 (CONSTANTIA)A light and creamy texture, hints of brioche on the nose and a fi ne mousse, this wine’s for special occasions. Serve with breakfast in bed – go for soft, buttery scrambled eggs and fresh smoked salmon atop a lightly toasted bagel.www.constantia-uitsig.com

ALMENKERK LACE RED 2010 (ELGIN)An elegantly smooth, easy-drinking blend – my personal favourite for quaffi ng with cold cuts, cheese, sun-blushed

tomatoes, rustic bread and fruity chutney on a lazy weekday evening.www.almenkerk.co.za

AVONDALE ANIMA CHENIN BLANC 2009 (PAARL)This beautiful, rounded Chenin has plenty of mouthfeel from wild yeast fermentation and extended lees contact, and hails

VUURBERG RED 2006 (STELLENBOSCH)Big, bold, and seductive. This will defi nitely warm you up on a cold winter’s night! Even more so if there’s a classic beef and ale stew with a Yorkshire pudding or, better still, a tender rabbit pie with suet-crust pastry.www.vuurberg.com

Forget wildlife channels in HD

– the BEST way to view

Cape fur seals is from the deck of a chartered boat

6 WINTER ’12

C O A S T G U I D E

DUCK AND DIVE

Duiker Island, commonly known as Seal Island, is famous for its Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) colony and a visit here should be on the itinerary for all wildlife enthusiasts. One of 35 species of seal in the world, the Cape fur seal can weigh up to 360 kg and, while often seen lazing on rocks in the sun, is an active swimmer; tagged seals have been known to swim the 1 600 km distance from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia. During breeding season (November to December) an estimated 20 000 pups are born, though many will fall prey to great whites that feed in the area. On a clear winter’s day, a 20-minute boat trip to the island affords spectacular views of Cape Point and Table Mountain. Boats depart daily, weather permitting, from Hout Bay harbour – bookings can be made through Drumbeat Charters (www.drumbeatcharters.co.za), a popular company that offers reasonably priced charters to the island. Plan your trip on the weekend to coincide with a visit to Bay Harbour, a vibrant all-weather market packed with delicious artisanal fare, open Fridays 5 to 9 pm, weekends 9:30 am to 4 pm.
