WelcomeWelcome to the fi rst edition of Rascals of London. And whow – what a journey it’s been to get here! But in spite of all those sleepless nights, seeing the mag fi nished makes it all worthwhile.

The true inspiration for this mag comes from Henry. Henry’s six and the Rascal of all Rascals. He’s a little bookworm, loves learning and is a budding footballer (or so my partner says!). But like all kids, he needs things to keep him busy and after endless searching for stuff for Henry to do at the weekend in London, my partner and I decided it was time for some serious research.

Six months on after struggling to find things to do for Rascally Henry in London, we decided to bring Rascals of London to life. It’s a mag designed to give parents, grandparents and carers answers to that difficult London question “what shall we do with the kids today?”. You’ll also find valuable parenting information plus plenty of helpful resources.

The Museum of London Docklands has a lot for children and our favorite area is Mudlarks. This is an informative and interactive play area for the under 12s, with a soft play section for under 5s. Everything is themed around life in the London docks so the big kids can weigh cargo or load a tea

clipper while the small kids get to crawl around with large foam bananas and a London bus, plus they can pretend to drive a DLR train. Talking of trains, to get to the Museum of London Docklands you need to take the DLR (Docklands Light Railway). Get a seat at the front as these trains don’t have a driver and you, or your little one, can pretend to drive the train!

The London Bicycle Tour Company provides bicycles suitable for the whole family from an hour up to a day, a week or even more.You just have to choose from a selection of bikes, adults and children models. If you are big, small or somewhere in between, they will definitely have something to suit you.A wide range of accessories (helmet, lights) are available if required and locks are provided. The best news is children under 17 go free to Kew Gardens! The Gardens are 300 acres. To get an idea of walking times between landmarks see the map, and if you´re with small children be prepared to double these times. Climbers and Creepers is Kew’s interactive play area for 3-9 year olds but explore the gardens first as once the kids get there they won’t want to leave! Try the Kew’s big tree book, which is aimed at children but an excellent introduction to the trees at Kew Gardens and trees in general.

Kid’s Zone is a fantastic play area for children under 10, within the National Army Museum. This place is cool! It’s all about discovery and the kids can go wild in a safe environment. Just ask at the information desk for a free timed ticket and you’ll get 50 minutes play time. The castle fortress is a lot of fun. Kids can dress up in soldier’s uniforms, scale the rock climbing wall, crawl through tunnels, and whiz down slides. There’s even a soft play for babies so you can take the whole family.

Learning to read

Set aside time

Try to read to your child everyday for 30 minutes. At first, read for only a few minutes at a time for several times a day, then gradually increase reading sessions as your child grows older.

Make it visual

Point to words as you read them in order to familiarize your child with what different words look like.

Be enthusiastic

Read various kinds of stories to your child, using different voices and changing your intonation in order to make the story more exciting. Singing the lyrics is also a good way to keep your child´s attention.

Repeat

Read your child’s favorite stories over and over again.

Keep a collection

Make sure your home has plenty of reading material that are age-appropriate for your child. Keep a collection of books, magazines and newspapers available in the house.

Involve your child

Talk to your child about what you are reading; point out objects in pictures and talk about what is going on in the story. When your child is old enough, ask questions about what is going to happen next, and objects in the pictures, and point out new words.

Set a good example

Show your children that reading is important to you as well. Read books yourself and ask your child to join you.

Visit the library

Take trips to the library with your child and let them pick out a book for story time.

Children who are read to at least three times a week are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25 percent in reading than those who are read to less than three times a week. As a result, reading to kids can have lasting effects on their educational level in the future.

Diary of a New Mum This has been the longest – and the shortest – week of my life. It’s funny – people tell you how hard it is, coming home with a baby for the first time. They say that lack of sleep is a killer, and that your whole world will be turned upside-down. But nothing – nothing – can prepare you for those first few days.

Of course, it’s not like this for everyone. People who have loads of family around, siblings with kids of their own, friends and neighbours to muck in, probably fare a lot better. But for us, well – it was just us. Hubby, baby and me. Knackered hubby, exhausted me, and screaming baby.

Jackson was born on Sunday morning and we were all back home by Monday afternoon. This was a bit of a shock – I’d expected to be kept in hospital for a few days, with this being my first baby and all. I’d expected to be allowed a night’s sleep at the very least! I hadn’t slept properly for weeks at the end of the pregnancy, getting up in the night to go to the bathroom- you know how it is. I hadn’t slept at all for the two nights before Jackson’s birth. And I didn’t sleep the night after either – in a ward with three other mums and babies there is always someone crying (and not necessarily the babies). Still, it’s not like sleep is essential to your physical and mental well-being. Oh, it is! That must be why I’m so messed-up right now, having been awake for approximately nine days!

I’m afraid I’ve given up on breast-feeding. Go on – shoot me. I’m a terrible mother, my baby is destined for a life of sickness and obesity and I’ve failed, failed, failed. I tried, I really did, but there was nothing there. And I just couldn’t bear to listen to Jackson screaming while I waited for my ‘milk to come in’. Perhaps it’s a bit of a design flaw. Lord knows, we’d planned to breast-feed, and as such didn’t have a bottle, teat or scrap of formula in the house. Cue yet another emergency trip to the supermarket. (Our food bill has gone through the roof and it’s only the first week of the month).

Jackson took to the bottle like he had been stranded in the desert for a year. He was happy, Paul was happy, and I feel like a failure. But, then again – I was bottle-fed, and most of my friends were bottle-fed. And we’re all fine. Of course, it is fantastic to breast-feed if you can, and you do give your baby extra immunity. The World Health Organisation recommends it, so don’t listen to me. All I’m saying is, don’t beat yourself up like I did if you can’t breast-feed. It’s not the end of the world. Unlike lack of sleep.

Once i´ve had some sleep I will write again soon but until then it’s a long good night from me, Enjoy the 1st edition of Rascals Of London and tune in next edition to find out how I get on with motherhood!

New Mama MYTHSIt’s True! Scientists have found that parts of a woman’s brain, including those responsible for reasoning and planning, grow after childbirth, but here are some common misconceptions.

MYTH: When babies pull on their ears, it means they have an ear infection.

It’s normal for kids to tug on ears! They’re floppy, fun things to grab onto, and babies are very curious and interested in ears. If an ear hurts, the baby probably won’t want to tug on it. MYTH: Breastfeeding mums have to eat a totally bland diet.

Sometimes nursing mums think they can only eat rice and pasta, no citrus or anything spicy. But babies actually get the flavours of foods their mum eats through her breast milk, and research shows that those flavours may help babies develop their palate.” MYTH: Babies can be spoiled if held too much.

During those first few months, holding your baby and responding to his cries is helping him form a secure feeling about the world. It’s common for parents to be so wrapped up in our babies that they forget to put them down, which can mean they learn not to be able to fall asleep alone or soothe themselves. MYTH: A green or yellow runny nose means that your child has a sinus infection and needs antibiotics.

This is usually not true. A sinus infection is commonly defined as having a green or yellow runny nose that lasts for more than 10-14 days without improvement. Many other infections caused by viruses can also cause a green runny nose, but unlike a sinus infection, these infections will not respond to an antibiotic. MYTH: Giving your infant cereal will help him to sleep through the night.

This is one of the most common. When your child begins to sleep through the night has more to do with his development and having a good bedtime routine where he learns to fall asleep on his own, and not on how hungry or full he is. Remember that many children do not begin to sleep though the night until they are about 3-4 months old.

You only have to put a saucepan and a wooden spoon in front of a toddler to see how natural making music is to a young child. As soon as you start singing “Happy Birthday” or put a CD on, children’s faces seem to light up. Making music is almost as natural to them as walking or talking.

One of the best reasons for enrolling your child into a music class is that they are such great fun for both of you! There are many other good reasons, such as early exposure to music, enhanced listening skills, learning to take turns etc. But I am sure a fun, interactive music class will be the highlight of your toddler’s week simply because they enjoy it so much. It isn’t just a case of passively listening to music or banging a triangle, they may be singing songs, playing with parachutes and puppets, dancing or playing percussion instruments.

Most classes will include music, story, movement and the exploration of all kinds of musical instruments. Many classes start from as young as six months where small percussion instruments may be used to engage the children’s attention, and to develop hand-eye co-ordination. As any parent knows, creating sounds with objects fascinates babies. As babies feel, touch and see each instrument, they begin to form an association between instrument and sound.

In music classes for babies there will be gentle and playful songs for them to listen to and enjoy.

Babies are captivated by different sounds and as the leader of the class and parents sing, babies will often join in with “musical babbling” which is their first speech sounds.

As the children play various instruments, they hear and wonder at the different sounds each instrument produces. Instinctively, they associate the sound with the instrument. As we all know, repetition at this age is essential, so some songs will be repeated at each class, ensuring that the babies feel comfortable. Toddlers will begin to develop their language skills and try to sing sounds to music, sometimes using formed words.

Lessons for pre-schoolers will continue to be great fun, and children may also delight in listening to an instrument and guessing the name and where it goes in an orchestra.There is always lots of singing involved in all music classes and many songs will have movements associated with them. The teacher encourages the children to act out stories, play singing games and use movement in meaningful ways. Music classes for pre-schoolers are based on the premise that all children are musical.

All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with confidence in music if they are exposed to it from a young age. Early childhood is the time when children learn about their world, primarily through the magical process of play, which is why they enjoy music classes so much. They get to play instruments which make a great noise, and they learn how to control that noise, and also the volume and pitch of their own voice.

Children will be exposed to many different kinds of songs in a class, with different beats and rhythms. They learn to develop an ear for beat and respond to beat, rhythm and qualities of music, such as loud and soft, and fast and slow. They will skip, hop, march, clap and step to the beat, showing their understanding of rhythm, beat and the feeling of the music. You can easily see why most children love their weekly music class! It also teaches them to take turns (not all the children can play the mini-drums at the same time!), to listen to their teacher and to others. These are valuable lessons to learn before starting school.

Many studies have shown that music enhances other learning, such as the acquisition of language, listening skills, maths skills, auditory discrimination, social understanding, and personal discovery. If children have music classes which are both fun and nurturing, ultimately it may inspire a passion for music that continues throughout their life.

This reconstructed open air theatre on the banks of the Thames brings the world of Shakespeare to life using interactive exhibits and live demonstrations. A full theatre programme runs between May and September.

Let me introduce myself. My name’s Isabelle and I’m mother to Jemima aged 7, Carl aged 4, Zachary aged 2 and Theo aged 11 months. I am one of the Directors of DreamMaker Day Nursery, a Nursery in Tower Hill. I’m also a barrister and I run my own legal practice specialising in employment law and legal advice to small businesses and charities. I am in the process of setting up a charity, The DreamMaker Foundation, which will set up educational establishments for street children overseas. I am married to my best friend, Clyde, who is creative, spontaneous and people-oriented, my complete opposite, in fact – this means that all things to do with the organisation, administration and structure in our household (i.e. everything!) falls on my shoulders.

We are both very busy, probably just like you and especially if you’re full time at home. When I was at home full time with my children during maternity leave, it was one of the hardest times of my life – going to work again was a welcome break! But, here are some of the ways in which we squeezed in learning with Jemima and our other children, whilst managing our own daily routines:

1. We teach them anytime, any whereEven when they go to the toilet! For Carl, our 4-year old, we might look at the objects in the toilet and identify the shapes – the toilet roll in the shape of a cylinder, the tissue box in the shape of a cuboid, the notice on the door in the shape of a rectangle.

2. We link their learning with goals they want to achieveWe once laminated giant letters in different colours, threw them in the garden and got

Jemima to spell the word ‘Ice cream’. When she did it, she ‘earned’ ice cream’ for the whole family.

3. Our children learn through play Carl, my 4-year old loves running outdoors, but doesn’t like maths. We took him to the woods and set him the task of collecting twigs to make into swords. He counted the twigs as he collected them. He then had to negotiate the number we would let him take home and had to do simple subtraction to figure out how many twigs he could keep.

4. We use ‘dead’ timeAs we’re driving to Nursery, I have a conversation in French (on the way there) and Spanish (on the way back) with my 2-year old Zachary using simple phrases and basic words:‘Comment tu t’appelle?’ – ‘What is your name?’ (French) ‘Cuantos anos tienes?’ – ‘How old are you?’ (Spanish).

5. We model good work ethicsWe have a very long table in our kitchen and we often sit down as a family to do our work – Clyde and I do our College work (to emphasise that adults get homework too!).

6. We turn any situation into a learning opportunityThe other day, we went to a National Trust property and were exploring the grounds. The children began to climb a tree. Clyde pulled some of the bark from the tree and there were insects crawling around as well as some indications of dry rot. Clyde is a quantity surveyor and became very excited by the dry rot. He explained what it is and what it can do to wooden furniture.

Do you often find yourself saying, ‘I just don’t know where to start!’ or ‘I’m trying to do everything but succeeding at nothing!’ or ‘If I had another 24 hours in a day, I could manage my life!’ If so…you’re probably a Mum!

7. We’ve switched our satnav to French!Our SatNav speaks to us in French! It took Clyde a while to figure out what ‘she’ was saying to us and we’ve ended up visiting some very interesting places. But, in the end, we all understand that ‘Tournez a gauche’ means ‘Turn left’ but ‘Dirigez-vous a gauche’ means head towards the left (believe me, there is quite a difference between the two!).

8. Our children always see me readingI often tell my children that reading is a ‘Key to Life’. There are other such ‘Keys’ for me and mine may differ from yours, but reading is definitely a major one for every child.

9. We read with our childrenI must confess, I really don’t enjoy reading out loud and I have absolutely no interest in what Chip and Biff are doing with their Magic Key, but…reading with children just has to be done. The key to my time management is using every second of ‘dead’ time, so, if I arrive at school with even 2 minutes before the bell rings, I sit on the ground and read to my children – half a page is better than none at all. Invariably, I end up with a crowd of children (not my own!) joining in.

10. We teach our children to work towards a goalJemima is currently revising for exams (yes, exams at the age of seven!). I’ve created a revision chart for her and took her out shopping the other day for the rewards she would earn for completing each piece of work. For example, she gets a ‘Silly Band’ (costing about 2p) for each set of 20 Maths questions she does. When she finishes all of the Maths exercises, she gets a wind-up torch (costing £3), when she completes all of her revision – in Maths, English and Comprehension – she gets a toy puppy (costing £10). Carl and Zac have already asked for ‘revision’ so they can start earning too!

I put all of this into practice since before becoming a mother (I used to read to my children in the womb, play classical music to them and talk to them through a speaker attached to my belly!). But I worked really, really hard on it when Jemima started ‘failing’ at school.

For me, I’ve learned that, despite all my accolades, the only one that really matters is seeing my children thrive…I wouldn’t want to be a Superwoman, but being a Super Mum is something I can achieve. You can too. ‘Impossible!’ I hear you say. Guess what? You can’t fail - because you’re the one who sets the exam…then you mark it yourself!

First, choose your location.

If you are thinking of having the party at home, have you got enough room? Children need enough to be able to sit down comfortably, but small children don’t take up a lot of space.

If you aren´t having the party at home, book the venue first and well in advance. The best venues usually book up fast.

Next, book the entertainer.

Always have a chat to the entertainer who will be coming to your party, even if booking through an agency.

Make sure your entertainer offers a varied show - children can´t concentrate for long on the same thing. And they need time to run around.

Make too much party food. Pizza is popular and easy to prepare.

Decorate the table with colourful fruit and vegetables– grapes, sliced banana, apple, carrots etc.

Avoid fizzy drinks – they are usually loaded with sugar & artificial sweeteners etc. Serve juice.

When sending out invitations, plan for siblings and parents, as well as your child’s friends.

Instead of a birthday cake, why not bring in a tray of fairy cakes! They are simple to bake and home-made is best!

Helium balloons are expensive. If the entertainer is making balloons for the children, just purchase one special balloon for the birthday child.

Treasure Hunt

The perfect theme for a birthday - treasure chests filled with sand, costume jewellery and puzzles for your guests. Attach colourful balloons if you desire. Use treasure maps as place mats on each table; put instructions on each table with clues to find treasure you have hidden in the house or garden. Fill a room with balloons to lead people to the “buried” treasure. Don’t forget “who’s a pretty boy then” (the parrot), leave clues to find the letters to spell the parrots name. And finally, list the clues as well as the “rules” on the instructions for this Treasure Hunt Kids Party inside or outside. Chocolate money is a great idea for hidden treasure.

Pyjama Party

There’s nothing like sitting around in your pyjamas and your favourite slippers, drinking hot chocolate, eating biscuits and sharing stories with friends. Invite everyone over for a pyjama party an all-night sleep over to celebrate your child´s birthday.

Magic Party

There is nothing more fascinating for children than magic. Remember when that coin was pulled from behind your ear, or when that eight of hearts card mysteriously ended up on the top of the deck? Come on, we can all admit that we marvelled!

Pirate Party

Does your child want to be a pirate? Find the buried treasure? Discover an island? Meet Captain Hook? Well, maybe not the last one, but this is a great party for any adventurous mate. Make an invitation and be creative. I suggest a treasure map to your house, what else? This isn´t hard to do and the whole family can get involved. Just make sure the clues aren’t too hard! Plan out your menu, and the activities that go along with it, etc. What do pirates eat? They love cake and ice cream and hot-dogs. Decorate the house with balloons and pictures of pirate ships and your table with chocolate money as treasure. Make treasure map place mats (that will send them looking for treasure).

Safari Party Track down animals in the jungle (aka your house or garden) + when you find them, put the right name on. Other games include pin the tail on the donkey, finding pairs of animals for Noah´s ark and animal dressing up.Bake animal-shaped biscuits + let the kids decorate them for the birthday tea. And don´t forget face painting and model making.

Film Star Party Make the Birthday child a film star for the party. All kids love dressing up and what better than for them to choose their favourite film star and all the guests can guess which star, character and film. Prizes could be in the style of Oscars. You could video the party interviewing guests as their film star role or acting out their favourite scene. And all for their 15 minutes of fame!

Has your relationship recently ended? Are you the parent left holding the babies?

When we have children in a relationship, married or not, we probably believe that we will spend the rest of our lives with our partner, grow old together and one day become grandparents together.

However if your relationship ends, whether you left your partner or they left you, you can be left feeling a multitude of emotions including grief, wretchedness, dejection, loneliness and despair and feel unable to see or make sense of your future.

There is no magic wand that will get you through these early days of separation; however there are things you can do to help yourself.

1. Recognise that you are not a failure – You are not the only single parent in the world. In the UK statistics show that 1 in 4 parents are parenting alone. (The average age of a single parent is 36, 55% previously married, 75% of children will experience a non-nuclear family while growing up and only 36% of families are traditional/nuclear).

2. Take responsibility for your role in the break up – It takes two people to really work at a healthy relationship. Recognise that divorce/separation was maybe the only and the best solution to a failing relationship. You will learn something new about yourself and face the future with a new found knowledge.

3. Forgive yourself – Nobody is perfect, it is a complete waste of time spending every hour of every day pondering, questioning and obsessing over the demise of your relationship.

4. Forgive your ex – Eek, might feel like a tricky one, however you don’t want to be wasting time in your life being angry about someone else’s shortfalls. By forgiving your ex partner you can find peace within yourself.

5. Take care of yourself – Find something new that interests you, get in touch with some old friends, listen to music that you loved when you were a teenager, find laughter again.

6. Create family time - Your family unit will be going through a time of restructuring, spend time with the children and share how you are all feeling with the changes that are going on. Single parents say that their relationship with their children has benefitted immensely once they are parenting alone. So find that space where you can have a family meal, DVD night and during this time you can share what is going on for everyone.
