4. Battle at third base Watch for Evan Longoria’s develop- ment at third base. Longoria will battle Willy Aybar, who the Rays acquired from the Atlanta Braves. Longoria spent 2007 in the Rays minor league system, batting .299 with 26 home runs in 136 games. Aybar has played in 105 major league games, but missed the 2007 sea- son. In his major league career he has hit .292 with 5 home runs. Akinori Iwamura will move from third to second base. Iwamura comes off a strong rookie season in which he batted .285 with 7 home runs and 34 RBI. More impressive than his offensive numbers was his strong defensive play. 5. Schedule puts Yankees in St. Petersburg only once The Rays’ first spring training game is Feb. 29 against the Reds in Sara- sota. The home opener at Al Lang Field is March 1 against the Blue Jays. Home games start at 1:05 p.m. The Rays will host theYankees March 12, a Wednesday game. This will be theYankees’ only visit this spring. How’s your New Year’sresolutions going? Breakthem yet?

That’s what I figured.Well, get ready for more

chocolate, this time molded inheart shapes.

Get ready for shortbreadheart cookies (someone’s gottatry that recipe on the back pagethis week).

And, oh, yeah, all those peo-ple in the office getting flowersdelivered.

And smooching in public. And the sappy cards.

And a deluge of red andpink everywhere you look.

That’s right. I see yourolling your eyes. Valentine’sDay (which, for the purposes ofthis column, will be called“VD”) is this coming Thursday.

You can’t avoid VD. It’s likethe plague. All that icky, smarmymushiness, everyone fawningover someone… that VD spirit isin the air. A former colleague ofmine said it best: “Share yourVD with someone special.” I feellike I need to wash my hands al-ready.

Unless you have no one todote over. Then, VD becomessomething you’d rather ignore.

Someone I know, whenasked about VD, said that VDdoesn’t have to involve someoneyou love. It could be for yourfamily, your dog….

So is VD a sickness? If you started reading this

column a couple of sentencesago, get your mind out of thegutter. I’m talking about Valen-tine’s Day.

Papa John’s Pizza offersheart-shaped pizzas, for the loveof Pete. There’s heart-shapedcheesecake… cheesecake…cheesecake…

567RTYU

DFGHJKCVBNM

Sorry, had to snap out of mycheesecake dream.Yeah, Ibanged my head into the key-board. Sorry.

If the way to a man’s heartis through his stomach, youdon’t have to do much for me,girls. Angie’s already got mycheesecake situation under con-trol, but you can send me one. Ifit requires refrigeration, betterbring it in person. Our address isin the bottom left corner of page2. I’m usually here before 11most days.

Maybe we need a cheese-cake contest. If there’s enoughinterest, I’d be happy to judge, but I need a large sample, atleast, in order to judge accu-rately.

At this point, you can tellI’ve steered away from signs ofaffection… to the gratificationthat comes with cheesecake. How selfish of me. I’mashamed.

So VD is a way to show oth-ers you care for them or you lovethem, cheesecake or not. It’s alsoan appropriate time to give toothers.

St. Jude’s Children’s Re-search Hospital, you know, theplace Danny Thomas used to ad-vertise for up in Memphis, ap-parently sells heart jewelry atshop.stjude.org.

That seems like a good wayto give to others and benefit yetmore people.

Might be better than givingthe dog that VD spirit. But thecheesecake thing still stands.

It’s one of several events and

opportunities to get tested thatwill encourage citizens to get ed-ucated, get treated and get in-volved with HIV/AIDS as it con-tinues to devastate blackcommunities.

The Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention (CDC) re-ports that 72 African Americansare infected with HIV every day.African Americans make up ap-proximately 13 percent of thepopulation of the United States, yet almost half of the totalAIDS

cases reported in this country isamong members of the Blackcommunity.

In Florida, more blacks areliving with HIV or already deadfrom AIDS than any other racialor ethnic group.

According to the Florida De-partment of Health, in 2006,blacks accounted for 45 percentof AIDS cases in men and 69percent in women, and 40 per-cent of HIV cases in men and 66percent in women.

This year’s NBHAAD themeis “prevention is power” and theTampa area will be among themore than 800 cities nationwideto sponsor programs supportingHIV/AIDS prevention initiativesthat call attention to, and seeksolutions for, this epidemic.

Floridians can text their zipcode to “46246” in order to re-ceive a text reply of their nearesttesting location.

All text messages are confi-dential.

So whowantsto be vicepresident?

Looking back at the resultsof what the media hadreferred to as “Tsunami

Tuesday,” the day did not producea clearly dominant frontrunner forthe presidential candidate race foreither major political party.

In fact, the mixed results ofthe primary left political prog-nosticators in a fog and left radiotalk show hosts a very easy jobpontificating the negative aboutall the candidates while watchingtheir ratings and paychecks soar.

What “Tsunami Tuesday”did is steel the candidates’ re-solve to continue their cam-paigns until the party conven-tions in late August. So now thepossibility of there being aspoiler or kingmaker at the con-vention is probable – and will re-mind those longer in the tooth ofthe conventions back in the un-sophisticated 1960s.

For the Republicans, after“Tsunami Tuesday” Sen. JohnMcCain, R-Ariz.) leads the con-vention delegate count with 697 tothe combined count of 431 dele-gates for formerArkansas Gov.Mike Huckabee and former Mas-sachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

But the party is split alongideological lines. Talk-radio talk-ing heads have exacerbated thesplit, bizarrely pushing their ownagenda and blasting the frontrun-ner, McCain. I thought that wasthe Democrats’ job, not allegedlytheir own supporters.

On the democratic side, Sen.Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., has1,012 delegates and Sen. BarackObama, D-Ill., has 993. To winthe Democrats’ nomination, acandidate needs 2,025 delegates. One would expect the candidatesto be constantly thowing spearsor the kitchen sink and anythingelse to gain the lead, but on thesurface, the sparring has beenmore genteel, leaving newspaperpundits predicting an absoluteChernobyl-style meltdown Chinasyndrome at the August conven-tion in Denver.

I think most would agreethat with only two candidates re-maining, the alliances each madeto get endorsements from vari-ous state leaders should give astrong hint on what the strate-gists think to balance to ticketand bring to the candidate thestates with the most electoralcollege votes. Just a note fromhistory: in 1994, then-Vice Presi-dent Al Gore won the popularvote, while President Bush wonthe electoral college.

So which states are reallybig guns? In order of impact theyare California (55), Texas (34),NewYork (31), Florida (27), Illi-nois (21), Pennsylvania (21),Ohio (20), Michigan (17), NewJersey (15), Georgia (15), NorthCarolina (15), and I could go on,but to win, all a candidate needsis 270 electoral votes. These 11states add up to 271.

Getting back on point, whowould balance the ticket to win?Bill Richardson of New Mexico.

Now moving on to the Re-publicans, and getting straight tothe point: Our own governor. Why? 27 electoral votes. Second,Florida voted Republican by only537 votes out of 8 million cast in2000. The impact of a favorite sonwould tip the balance. Finally,Charlie was in NewYork withMcCain on TV on the platformout front, just as he was when hewas Secretary of Education, andlater asAttorney General underformer Gov. Jeb Bush.

So, Florida could be againbe the dealmaker for the Repub-licans.
