THE AWARD OF THE GEORGE MEDAL

TO AIRMENThe George Medal to Airmen was instituted by a Royal Warrantdated 24th September 1940, and published in the LondonGazette 31st January 1941. The medal is primarily for civiliansand award in the military services is to be confined to actionsfor which purely military honours are not normally granted. Thisgreat cover, from the “Awards” series is a large 13” x 9” cover,and comes with a photocard and information on those whohave signed it.

This lovely cover celebrates the 10th Anniversary of theRed Arrows - The Aerobatic Team of the Royal Air Force.

It was flown in the Red Arrows Gnats from Jersey to R.A.F.Kemble in November 1975. The Flight time was 30 minutesand then 30 seconds at supersonic, Mach 1.1. As well asa 10th Anniversary Jersey postmark, the cover also bears a“Supersonic Flight” cachet. Signed by the entire NINEmembers of the Red Arrows crew including Sqn Ldr DickieDuckett.

SGT GEORGE LEONARD JOHNSONSeargent George Leonard “Johnnie” Johnson DFM wasthe Bomb Aimer on the Operation Chastise mission. He

flew on the AJ-T crew piloted by Flt Lt Joe McCarthyduring the Second Wave of the Dambusters mission.

Their target was the Sorpe Dam.
