Ruby, a 30 year-old Canadian woman and Founder of RAR, has lived and worked in Chengdu, Sichuan, China for over two years. She has over five and half years of hands-on experience with wild and domestic animals at rescue and rehabilitation centres, pet retreats, sanctuaries, animal clinics and has edited international wildlife journals in Canada, the United States and China. Her passion is for bears and she felt God put it on her heart to come to China after seeing pictures and videos of bears

being barbarically milked for their bile on bear farms. After working and living amongst the people and at the fore-mentioned facilities she realized that bear- farming was one aspect of the problem. Large majorities of Chinese do not believe that animals have the capacity to feel pain or emotions. Bear and tiger farming, dogs and cats being boiled and skinned alive for their meat and fur, circuses and zoos that abuse animals to perform unnaturally and inhumanely, and much more are related to this factor. The lack of international standards of veterinary care in China increases animal abuse on a large scale and proliferates the perception of animals being non- sentient.

RAR was founded to provide Chinese veterinarians and rescuers with the tools necessary to stop animal abuse across the country. RAR is utilizing several highly successful RSPCA and Hong Kong SPCA animal welfare programs to increase the human-animal bond, veterinary care, and provide tried solutions to these overwhelming problems. Combining Cat Care Colony, Community Dog and Foster/Adoption Programmes to reduce the stray cats and dog population and introduce responsible pet ownership and Humane Education concepts into China.

These programs will be complemented and advanced via a Knowledge and Education Exchange Program between international and Chinese veterinarians.

RAR will be starting a Lecture Series in early 2014 to initiate this Program, and is currently working with international and Chinese veterinarians to develop this and the previously mentioned programs.

Earlier this year Ruby has already taught Humane Education courses to several children groups, and will further these lectures to schools and Universities thanks to the resources and material provided by the Education Department of the Hong Kong SPCA.

RAR already has several people involved with the Cat Care Colony Programme and is starting to develop a Foster Parent database.

RAR’s ultimate and primary goal is to open an Education and Rescue Centre in China to train Chinese and international animal professionals hands-on in multiple disciplines such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, assisted animal therapy and much more.

Rescue Centres Across China

Several times a year compassionate Chinese risk their lives to physically stop trucks full of hundreds of cats and dogs intended for the meat trade. Unfortunately these facilities do not have the procedures, resources or veterinary training to handle such a large

influx of animals. Basic needs and the RSPCA/World Health Organisation’s Five Freedoms for animals are not met. Disease and breeding are rampant, and hundreds or thousands of animals are kept in cages or concrete enclosures. These animals have no quality of life and abuse is continued in the form of neglect.

RAR seeks to work only with the Chinese rescue centres that diligently work to aim and uphold

international standards of animal care and linking them with the Knowledge and Education Exchange Program. Thereby increasing animal welfare across the country.

Fundraising Website

Only with your help can RAR develop and advance animal welfare programs in China. Any donation whether large or small will be used directly to help animals and begin long-term sustainable solutions through working alongside veterinarians to animal welfare vehicles/de-sexing programs to helping animals that are living a life of abuse.

RAR is currently working towards becoming a registered charity.
